If you are at relatives house with no bathroom bins where do you put your used sanitary stuff? I've been wrapping my tampons putting in handbag and putting them in the outside bin. I would always empty the bathroom bin and my periods are very heavy so need changing frequently., SIL isnt menopausal even my dad who lives alone has bathroom bins ??!!

We have bins in all rooms and I know my dh uses bathroom bin for razor stuff

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2021 22:40

I love that it's Christmas Day evening and instead of playing Monopoly or Charades as is tradition we're here defending having or not having a bathroom bin.
Competition going for who has the fewest female visitors at the moment. Grin

Can't believe so many posters are saying flush Tampons down the loo.

Most definitely do not flush tampons down the loo. Over a period of time - sorry about the pun - it will cause a blockage.

It's like shoving a bit wodge of cotton wool down the loo on a regular basis.

Nothing but human waste and loo paper should be put down those pipes.

Just got back from my in-laws. They don’t have any bathroom bins (despite having a daughter) and I’m on my period. House was full of people, including lots of inquisitive kids and nosy adults. Their kitchen bin is this piddly little thing that you can’t hide anything inside. There’s just no way to discreetly walk used sanpro from the bathroom upstairs to the kitchen bin. And if I tried to take it outside I’d be met with a million questions about where I was going.

I now know to take a bin bag that I keep in our room for used sanpro, but I hate it. Absolutely dread going there when on my period. We have bins in every bathroom in our house!

Marmite27 · 25/12/2021 22:41

@CoffeeRunner

We have a bathroom bin & I don't even have periods!

Where do you put your used cotton wool balls, cotton buds & loo roll inners?

San Pro belongs absolutely anywhere bar the kitchen IMO. I'd way rather a smelly bathroom bin than a smelly kitchen!

 1. don’t use cotton wool, I used the kids old reusable wipes
 2. cotton wool buds and loo roll tubes go in the recycling.

The only person likely to be here the length of time needed to change any protection is my mum and she’s past it. Most of my friends use reusable, period pants or moon cups. The ones that don’t are accompanied by their small children who are in nappies, so will have nappy bags with them.

CheesecakeAddict · 25/12/2021 22:41

@NerrSnerr under what circumstances would I have a 10 year old girl in my home? And if by some weird scenario, a friend has brought over the newly menstruating child she has recently kidnapped round for a brew, the bigger question is why have those adults in that child's life not made a big enough effort to destigmatise periods? Why are they embarrassed? Again, my home, if people aren't comfortable, they don't have to come. I prefer meeting people outside of my home anyway.

Svara · 25/12/2021 22:42

If I had a bathroom bin despite not needing one myself then I'd have to remember to check it after female guests visited or things could sit in it for weeks.

Twopandemicpregnancies · 25/12/2021 22:43

When I first visited my now-DP’s bachelor pad he didn’t have a bathroom bin (once I explained why they are needed a bin appeared in his bathroom before my next visit!). I can see how youngish men who have never menstruated/ given birth and used maternity pads / used incontinence products might be oblivious to the need for a bathroom bin but am astonished at how many women don’t get it!

Mittenmob · 25/12/2021 22:43

I never have visitors, so the no bin issue is no problem.

Do people have separate recycling bins for the bathroom?

rubbleonthedoub · 25/12/2021 22:45

It is considered a red flag on female dating strategy if you go out with a man he doesn't have a bathroom bin for women to dispose of sanitary products I. His house.

Not a red flag, but if I was dating him I'd tell him I'm going to need a bathroom bin for my sanitary products. Easy.
RoyalFamilyFan · 25/12/2021 22:48

@Svara empting the bin is part of my regular cleaning of the bathroom.

greenanorak · 25/12/2021 22:48

@pastypirate

This thread reminds me I need to put a bin in the downstairs loo.

Also bathroom bins with no lid are disgusting.

Yeah they do need a lid

I don't. Empty bottles, cardboard tubes and other recyclables come down there and then and go straight in the wheelie. Bathroom bin is for household waste that goes to landfill.
GobletOfIre · 25/12/2021 22:51

The in-laws don’t have a bathroom bin and it’s horrible when I have my period. I take a carrier bag, plus dog poo bags. The carrier goes into the bin at the end of my stay and I can’t use their downstairs loo if I need to change my tampon as my makeshift bin is upstairs.

I’m not traipsing through the house, used tampon in hand, with FIL, BIL and nephews roaming about.

God no to separate recycling bins. We just take recycling out to the green bin. In our hands....

@RosieGuacamosie

Genuinely intrigued about what the non bathroom people expect female period age guests to do? Stroll into the kitchen with a tissue paper wrapped tampon and say “excuse me just need to pop this in the bin” Confused
I would also be thinking also about female guests who might need to change an incontinence knicker liner. I'm not aware of any women of my acquaintance who use such things, but am guessing it's on the list of things not spoken about rather than not existing.

The idea of having to go to the kitchen bin, or worse, having to ask where the bin is as so many are hidden these days, is out of order for me.

doadeer · 25/12/2021 22:56

I don't have a bin as I use cups and period pants so I might forget to get a bin if someone stayed.

PriamFarrl · 25/12/2021 22:56

What always amazes me with these threads is how upset other people get about my lack of bathroom bin. It’s my bathroom and my choice.

I don’t use tissues, cotton wool, dental floss, wipes or cotton wool buds so they don’t need throwing away.
Toilet roll tubes and toothpaste tubes I take out of the bathroom with me and put them in the bedroom bin. Shampoo and conditioner bottles are refilled.
I’m not tripping over a bin that wouldn’t fit in my bathroom on the off chance that a menstruating woman might show up.

I couldn't cope with that. Hats off to you for making do
TheSoapyFrog · 25/12/2021 22:57

I don't have a bathroom bin but this is because my son would rummage through it and play with whatever was in there.
I just take out whatever rubbish and put it in the main bin (san pro) or my bedroom bin (cotton wool).
I rarely have guests and the only people who stay overnight are my boyfriend and my parents (in an emergency).

Svara · 25/12/2021 23:00
@Svara empting the bin is part of my regular cleaning of the bathroom.
I wouldn't check a bin if I hadn't had anyone visit who might use it, there would be nothing to empty

PriamFarrl · 25/12/2021 23:00

I think what this shows is that some peoples houses are often busy.
If you have lots of guests and teenaged children who are bringing guests home then you need one.
If you have lots of people over to visit or stay then you need one.
If you use single use products then you need one.

But some people don’t have loads of guests, don’t have periods and don’t use single use products.

Neither is wrong. Just different.

Faretheewellmyfairyfay · 25/12/2021 23:02

Bluntness is right. The mind does indeed boggle. The way some people treat their female friends and relations...

RoyalFamilyFan · 25/12/2021 23:02

@Svara it takes 2 seconds - its empty so leave it.
