No bathroom bin

If you are at relatives house with no bathroom bins where do you put your used sanitary stuff? I've been wrapping my tampons putting in handbag and putting them in the outside bin. I would always empty the bathroom bin and my periods are very heavy so need changing frequently., SIL isnt menopausal even my dad who lives alone has bathroom bins ??!!

I don't have a bathroom bin either. I don't like the idea of things festering up there, and me not realising. It's just as easy to put things in the outside bin.

RoyalFamilyFan · 26/12/2021 03:28

@MintJulia I will be honest. The few times I visit houses like yours, I just flush stuff down the loo. If it blocks it, c'est la vie.

NumberTheory · 26/12/2021 03:41

@RoyalFamilyFan

So flush sanitary towels as well?
If that’s to me, Royal, I don’t know. I haven’t used pads since I was a teen (before flushing was verboten!) so it’s never come up. I don’t know what my hosts without bins use.
countrygirl99 · 26/12/2021 03:46

@Cheesywhine

Do people not flush tampons.
I certainly hope theydo not. It's a dreadful thing to do. Blocks the pipes and if you can't cope with emptying s bathroom hin you have no right to ask anyone to clear backed up shit.

It’s clearly not “just as easy” for guests who might not even know where your outside bin is and are likely to feel uncomfortable wandering around looking.
gofg · 26/12/2021 04:46

I've never had a bathroom bin and don't recall seeing one in other people's bathroom. What's wrong with the kitchen bin? Or do you all live in huge mansions where the kitchen is miles away from the bathroom?

gofg · 26/12/2021 04:53

Incidentally OP, why can't you flush tampons? That's what people do here - or they did when I was of an age to use them. Yuk, I can't imagine anything more horrible than leaving them in a bathroom bin (different in a workplace loo where they have the correct hygienic receptacles).

mathanxiety · 26/12/2021 05:04

I have a small bathroom pedal bin and another for recyclables.

I think it's awful to make women and girls scuttle around with used sanpro up their sleeves or in their bags looking for some place to dispose of it.

The world is already unfriendly and inconvenient enough for women. I don't know why women wouldn't consider other women's needs when outfitting their homes.

mathanxiety · 26/12/2021 05:08

@gofg, tampons don't degrade and they can't be flushed. Millions of them end up on beaches every year.

The only thing you can flush is toilet paper. Even so called flushable wipes are not suitable for flushing.

mathanxiety · 26/12/2021 05:11

@LaBellina, what do you mean by the word 'signal'?

How do you not know this not OK?
SmellyOldPartridgeinaPearTree · 26/12/2021 05:36

It was actually one of these threads that enlightened me about not flushing tampons. I didn't realise you shouldn't! I read on the Tampax box when I started my periods 25 years ago that you should flush them and that's what I did. Never came up in conversation or anything that I read that you shouldn't and just didn't occur to me! Then I read a thread on here and people were like ConfusedConfusedConfused how can you think this is ok?! I don't really know how I missed the memo.

Gooseysgirl · 26/12/2021 05:45

God I would not dream of not having a bathroom bin!! I have mini pedal bins in ours, lined with rubbish bags, regularly emptied. If I'm going somewhere and I know there won't be a lidded bathroom bin (rare) I'll bring nappy sacks with me and carry sanpro in my handbag until I find a bin.

MaryShelley1818 · 26/12/2021 06:05

Absolutely disgusting not having a bin in the toilet/bathroom. There are some seriously mucky people on here.
Thankfully I don't think I've ever visited a home who would do this.

Don’t need to live in a mansion for there to be just one upstairs bathroom. It’s a pain to have to scuttle downstairs in the middle of the night just to dispose of sanpro. Also a pain for a guest who might not have any idea which bin you consider appropriate or where it is.
Thatldo · 26/12/2021 06:11

Eh..try this:where do you want me to put my tampons/sanatary towels?there is no bin in the bathroom.

I belief all women at some point in their life have a period,is it such a big deal to ask where to put tampons.Unbelievable prudishness!

Yeah years ago it was considered fine to do so and ear buds too. I've only been aware of impact on environment in past ten years.
Bluntness100 · 26/12/2021 06:35

I think all that’s been said on here is if you’ve menstruating female guests then pay them a courtesy of providing a lined and lidded bathroom bin, do not expect them to walk it through your house, take nappy sacks or dog poo bags to thr loo, or hide used Sanpro in their bag,

If you don’t, then no one cares, do what you want in your own home, although using your kitchen bin many find a bit disgusting.

I have just read back my posts but don’t see the word signal there. Are you sure it was my post @mathanxiety or am I in dire need of reading glasses 😅?

AuntieJoyce · 26/12/2021 07:14

Shock at the thought of guests trotting round the house with tissue wrapped sanpro in search of kitchen bin

Equally Confused at the PP who empties the bathroom bin daily even for a cotton bud

Those who flush, why not go outside your house and lift up the drain cover. You might get a shock

HardbackWriter · 26/12/2021 07:58

This thread has made me realise we don't have a bin in the bathroom guests would actually use - we have one in the upstairs bathroom, but not in the downstairs loo. Guess we should put one in!

AdamandMadam · 26/12/2021 08:43

@GiantHaystacks2021

Yeah, it's mind boggling, isn't it?

My parents have never had a bathroom bin in their house.
I could never throw any soiled sanitary stuff in the one and only indoor bin in the kitchen because my dad likes to go through that bin with this bare hands, to see what has been thrown away.
He also goes through the big bin outside.

When I stay with them, I put my used wrapped up soiled towels etc in plastic bags and then deposit them in any bins I come across around town.
Otherwise my dad will open them up.

Golly, that’s horrible! Why does he need to go through everything?

I remember on a previous thread like this, someone grew up in a household where used san pro had to be chucked on the open fire in the sitting room even if they had guests there at the time. I felt so sorry for her younger self.

nannybeach · 26/12/2021 09:00

OMG, the world is difficult enough for women without providing a bathroom bin for these poor things with a period. My lady guests don't arrive at the door and announce that they have a period. My bathroom is tiny,my last one (Edwardian tiny cottage,no room for bins. I think they look messy anyway. Open plan bungalow here, bathroom next to kitchen, was in the last house,(no, not "off" the kitchen,in case it upsets anyone on here) I used to have dreadfully heavy periods, would get through sanitary protection hourly. Went in a nappy sack, wonder what everyone does with the actual nappies then

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 09:01

Nothing I have read on this thread or all the other threads there’s been on this has persuaded me to get rid of my bathroom bins.
I have guests. I have no idea who uses what San pro but they are welcome to use the bins.

Cuck00soup · 26/12/2021 09:02

It sounds like some people flush a lot more that pee, poo and paper. We have very small bathroom bins lined with nappy/dog poo liners. Useful for tissues, hair, medication packaging, cotton buds, nail clippings, labels from new clothes, toothpaste tubes and non-recyclable empty containers. .

It’s easier to take recycling to the kitchen than used sanitary products. Of less interest to the dogs too.
