Mil coughing and full of cold

They tested negative on LFTs last night but, aibu in being slightly bloody annoyed?

I'm 33 weeks pregnant. To be honest, after a shit winter of illness anyway, regardless of covid, I don't want to catch a cold!

I'm not hysterical about illness and germs but I do think it's good manners to notify people if you are ill and give them the option of backing out of a social arrangement if they don't want to catch it - especially if it involves someone who is pregnant.

Lavender24 · 26/12/2021 00:25

And yeah I'm with those saying you should feign illness and leave.

Ottercave · 26/12/2021 00:36

I’m not getting involved in whether your Mil is unreasonable or not but what I will say is the latest Flowflex lft say you can use them if you have symptoms.

See that bit where, after telling you you can use it if you have symptoms, it says “However you should check National Guidelines to see what type of test is right for you.”?

Well guess what the guidelines says?

Thanks @eastegg, I'm home now and hoping I avoid it because even if it's not coronavirus apparently it wiped them out for days, so not ideal either way. Was harder because they made a real effort to fly in for Christmas as they work abroad, so I was kind of made to feel like I was being overly precious by everyone else. Esp as my sister was v upset that I wanted to go home on Christmas Eve, and Christmas was being ruined. Anyway we cut our trip short by a couple days in the end.

OP hope you've managed to leave by now also. Sorry you're in that situation too, and hopefully you avoid getting sick

greenanorak · 27/12/2021 08:21

She's worse today, finally going for a bloody PCR

OP posts:
zafferana · 27/12/2021 08:23

I can't believe you're still there ...

The level of Christmas martyrdom on MN at Christmas amazes me.

hashbrownsandwich · 27/12/2021 08:26

I was negative on lateral flow at all stages prior to symptoms, while awaiting PcR, when I was horrendously bed bound by it. Don't rely on them.

I know. I hate myself.

@Holly60

I’m going slightly against the grain and saying it’s just a cold. If they tested yesterday I wouldn’t be so worried, even at 33 weeks pregnant. Colds are common and you are probably exposed to them all over the place.

Just ask her not to get to close to you and cough into a clean tissue every time.

I hate it when people say " It's just a cold"

Colds can and do make you feel vile and they can affect everyone differently, as well as there being so many different strains.

Never mind having one, if that's what ops MIL has, and not Covid, when heavily pregnant.

Please op. Think of yourself and
go home.

Notonthestairs · 27/12/2021 08:50

Are you at least heading home today?

greenanorak · 27/12/2021 09:03

@Notonthestairs

Are you at least heading home today?
Yes packing the car now.

She said she's felt sick too, which I believe is a new official symptom.

My husband is praying (atheist) because he knows I'll go ballistic if it is covid

OP posts:
Offmyfence · 27/12/2021 09:50

You're going to go ballistic if it's covid, but you've made no attempt to leave because it's "awkward"? You've got a good idea it's covid as you've said about the symptoms.

Your double jabbed and boostered so it may well be no worse than a cold.

So if MIL had got some other virus, you're fine with that? Wont go ballistic?

PurpleDaisies · 27/12/2021 09:52

You chose to stay there. You could have left as soon as you saw she was unwell but you’ll “go ballistic” if it’s covid? Hmm

BatshitBanshee · 27/12/2021 10:13

Eh, you missed the opportunity for ballistic when you decided to stay. You should have enough personal responsibility to not put yourself in a situation where you might get covid or even a regular flu at this stage of your pregnancy. You should have accepted being "awkward" days ago when you realised she wass that sick and left. If you're having a baby, you need to realize that the baby comes first above all else. Christ.

Notonthestairs · 27/12/2021 10:18

I think the Op's husband carries some responsibility here. Also a parent to be and should be just as concerned for Op - why couldn't he have intervened? I'd suggest it would be easier for him to upset the Christmas apple cart. Or perhaps MIL could have been responsible and cancelled hosting.

Anyway I'll keep my fingers crossed that you are all well.

I have covid at the moment (vaccinated and boostered) and feel dreadful. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 27/12/2021 10:27

It's extremely hard if it's in laws, and really it was up to OP's husband to deal with his mum. It's very difficult and awkward when it's not your immediate family to put your foot down and leave. Glad you're on your way home though

Honestly it's such a complicated relationship. I wouldn't go ballistic but I'll be very annoyed, yes I know we could have left as soon as we arrived but that would have caused WW3

Before I get pounced on for this comment, it's tongue in cheek. I accept responsibility

I agree.

And that's probably why she would feel like going ballistic. I would feel the same.

Would it really?? Honestly, going ballistic, causing WW3?

Such drama! ,

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/12/2021 10:35

To be honest the main issue here is yours and your husbands inability to stand up for yourselves.

Do you both struggling with boundaries or is it specifically to do with his parents ?

Palavah · 27/12/2021 10:36

@drspouse

LFTs are only if you are asymptomatic.
Where did you get that from. LFTs have a greater accuracy when symptomatic than asymptomatic. They are useful for mass asymptomatic testing, because quicker and cheaper than PCRs. Doesn't mean you can't take one if symptomatic.
PurpleDaisies · 27/12/2021 10:37

yes I know we could have left as soon as we arrived but that would have caused WW3

And that would have been worse than potentially getting covid while pregnant?

RealBecca · 27/12/2021 10:38

You and your partner need a serious conversation before baby is born if exposing your unborn child to risk is preferential to "WW3"
