To be really confused and ‘meh’ by these gifts

I know this sounds spoilt. It’s more that I’m confused more than anything. Bought my mum a lovely necklace, her favourite chocolates and fudge, a key ring from my DS and lots of other personalised things. I was given a small foot stool (?), a throw for my sofa and a wax melt burner. I feel a bit gutted as my sister got a brand new camera plus lots of other nice bits. I just feel like no thought went into the gifts for me? I’m 26... these gifts seem a bit odd. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, just confused

If you've not expressed a desire for them then yes they seem odd & "householdy" compared to what your sister got.

Is thee something personal that you would have liked & did you tell your Mum?

Did your sister ask for a camera?

mam0918 · 25/12/2021 16:28

Also, my gift from my mam this Xmas is a suprise cleaning hamper... I avoid cleaning like the plague if I can.

Blackmagicqueen · 25/12/2021 16:28

A footstool is an odd thing to buy anyone unless it is specifically requested!

ThePlumVan · 25/12/2021 16:28

Put your feet up, wrap yourself up, and order yourself some better presents in the sales Wine

PizzaCrust · 25/12/2021 16:30

I’m a similar age to you and have young DC. There’s no way my mum would buy me a bloody foot stool.

Just because you have kids doesn’t mean every aspect of your life now revolves around them and your home. My mum usually lets me pick some clothes etc because sometimes having kids money doesn’t stretch to a shopping spree for yourself- ie gifts that are a treat for me. Unless I specifically asked for something for the house, she just wouldn’t.

YANBU. I hope someone else got you some more personal gifts that are suited to you and not just your role as a mum/stereotypical housewife figure.

AngelsEyeball · 25/12/2021 16:31

One year I got a set of saucepans and my Xmas pressy and a birthday I got an electric whisk. Nothing fancy, cheap tat

icedcoffees · 25/12/2021 16:31

@Divebar2021

A foot stool??? What person in their 20’s wants that?? She’s not a nana. Did you actually ask for anything or give any suggestions? I’m guessing your sister asked for a camera.
Foot stools aren't just for "nanas" fgs. They just mean you can put your feet up without taking over the sofa. We deliberately got our last sofa with a built-in chaise longue so I could sit with my feet up and out in front of me Grin

Or is that something only old people like to do? I'm 33 and love mine, anyway!

PizzaCrust · 25/12/2021 16:33

@mam0918

For the love of god get it reupholstered at least, brown corduroy in home furnishings belongs only in the pit of hell 😅

icedcoffees · 25/12/2021 16:33

I think your presents sound lovely OP, but then I am writing this wrapped under a blanket with my feet up and a wax melt burning!

Chokkiesaurus · 25/12/2021 16:35

A footstool..? Odd gift. Ask if you could exchange it.

Paddingtonthebear · 25/12/2021 16:38

Maybe a bit odd but it sounds like you were expecting something much more expensive?

My parents don’t buy me anything 🤷‍♀️

Nosnowthisyear · 25/12/2021 16:43

I think those gifts are odd for someone in their 20s.

3g4g5g · 25/12/2021 16:54

Havent read the full thread, I reckon these are gifts they've got from someone else last year!

Aprilx · 25/12/2021 17:10

I think your presents were personal, more personal than a camera. I think you have no room to talk when you bought chocolates and a key ring though!

FreeBritnee · 25/12/2021 17:13

Sounds nice to me too 🤷‍♀️

FluffyBooBoo · 25/12/2021 17:17

I think the gifts you got sound really nice. I would really like the throw and the wax melt burner.

I would also be delighted with fudge, but not fussed about chocolates, a necklace or a keyring.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 25/12/2021 17:22

You bought her chocolates and a …. key ring, so I don’t think you’re in any position to complain about impersonal presents.

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 25/12/2021 17:25

could they have been re-gifted?

Shallwegoforawalk · 25/12/2021 17:27

@Sandinmyknickers AND a necklace AND other personalised things she said! Hmm

Pedalpushers · 25/12/2021 17:31

I think it's a bit weird for grown adults to be so bothered about what people get them for Xmas. It's a day to get someone a couple of token gifts, not present them with your amazon wishlist.

Madickenxx · 25/12/2021 17:37

I understand the upset but this will be something you laugh about in years to come. If it helps, my mum got me a fire extinguisher and a garlic press. My brothers (both in their 50s) got a silk pillow case each.Grin

EezyOozy · 25/12/2021 17:41

I think these gifts sounds lovely, some foot stools can be absolutely beautiful! I think if you compare yourself to the woman who got dry shampoo and deodorant for Christmas (current thread) you've not done badly at all! I got a jumper and a lipstick and I'm chuffed

ChiefStockingStuffer · 25/12/2021 17:42

@Postyisalwaystired

They are nice don’t get me wrong. It’s just everyone got individual gifts including my DP, but I got stuff for the house, which doesn’t feel very personal.

My sister does not have kids, nope

I agree it's shit if everyone else got 'personal' well thought out gifts and you got random things for your house.
Kuachui · 25/12/2021 17:42

tbf id be hurt if they wernt "me" like id expect my mum to know me at least a bit.. i remember once receiving a gardening and flowers book ffom someone who i thought should have known me...

i didnt do gardening... i didnt even like flowers particularly

AlphabetStew · 25/12/2021 17:43

My husband got me a make up bag with an initial on it. Not my initial.

So, just a letter then really! Xmas Grin
