To think the Christmas Number One has gone tacky and downhill?

I just saw that LadBaby has had its 4th Christmas number one single. Based on what? Tik tok and streaming views on YouTube? I haven’t heard the song and not going to bother but does anyone else think music these days is just low effort, cheap and bland? What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example.

Also saw that they had a rivalry to get to number one with a band called “The Kunts”. Really? I have no problem with the word cunt but I also don’t think this fits in with the whole Christmas theme. Can you imagine a child saying “who reached number one, mummy?” And she replies “it was The Kunts darling”??

@Teacupsandtoast

You do know that all the money from the downloads of the Ladbaby songs goes to the Trussell Trust foodbank charity? They've raised a HUGE amount and supported so many families - who cares if the songs are a bit rubbish?
Yes. Totally this. Brilliant charity fund raising for The Trussell Trust foodbanks. Good for them.
slashlover · 26/12/2021 15:15

It's been noted before that the PROFITS go to the Trussell Trust, which covers a lot of expenses. If people are DLing it for charity then they're much better off donating directly.

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2021 15:33

I like 'Stay another day'
I only found out a a few years ago it was written about a man who ( sadly ) committed suicide and a family member used to ask him to just hang on for one more day :(
It is a sad song , but well written and performed.
It's great that the 'lad baby ' songs are for charity but I don't particularly like the songs much.
I've seen the couple being interviewed and they seem nice enough. I've not seen the Twitter stories about them. If they were not nice they wouldn't be doing it for charity , but maybe I'm just a bit naive!
The days of waiting for ' who is number one ' are long gone now!

Shit novelty songs have always done well. And most Christmas songs are pretty tacky. Doesn't seem like much has changed to me.

ShesMadeaTwatOfMePam · 26/12/2021 20:35

I don't think you're supposed to like the song. I bought it because theyre raising money for the trussell trust. I think the song is shite but it's meant to be.

I cannot get my head around people genuinely caring who is number 1 at xmas. This time next week you'll have forgotten all about this outrage, in the meantime Trussell Trust will be able to feed many more people as a direct result of ladbaby.

We won't be hearing Lad Baby and X Factor nonentities in 30-40 years though will we? But we'll still be hearing Slade, The Pogues, Mud etc.

Exactly, and 2 become 1

Bloody hell you are obsessed with that song. Are you one of the spice girls?

No Hmm I’m just using it as an example of a classic Christmas song compared to now

2 become bum, more like.

DrSbaitso · 26/12/2021 21:26

I'd completely forgotten that 2 Become 1 was a Christmas number one. Still don't remember that, actually.

It's just an ordinary pop song.

Hilarious, if you’re the type to find stuff like Mrs Browns Boys funny, I suppose Hmm

@SoniaFouler 2 become 1 has has zero air play for years - and believe me this is from someone who has had to endure magic 100% Christmas for weeks at work. Whereas as pp says, Pogues, Wizard, Slade etc etc are played 20/30/40 years later.

Hardly a Christmas classic Hmm

I literally heard it twice on the radio in the last week and I hardly listen to the radio. And it was released over 25 years ago so I think it DOES count as a classic by now, if you’ve just counted 20 years as classic.

i.e slade (Noddy Holder) still gets about £1 million a year from plays of "merry xmas everybody", I'd doubt the spice get much - especially as they didn't even write any of their songs.

OldHip · 26/12/2021 21:32

They get even less now that the title has officially changed to 2 become bum. Copyright wars!

namechangeagain32 · 26/12/2021 21:32

I heard 2 become 1 today, I've never knowingly heard any of the "ladbaby" songs, haven't got a clue what they sound like or what they're called. And I listen to Radio 1 most days.

Flapjacker48 · 26/12/2021 21:32

'@SoniaFouler Are you one of the spice girls trying to drum up plays for your shit manufactured songs, which the group members didn't even write?

No, clearly not. But you’ve just said “that song gets zero air play these days” and in the space of 3 minutes, two different posters have told you they have heard it in the last week, one who heard it today.

I agree OP.
The first song Ladbaby did I thought, OK it's for a good cause. The second was like, yeah this is getting old now
But fourth time? Urgh
I also felt like the guy tries to look all worthy, but was slating the Kunts song for being anti-Boris, that his song was "better" because it was to tackle food poverty, and the Kunts song had nothing to do with Christmas.

Oh the irony!

There would'nt be food poverty if it wasn't for Boris and Co, hence the Kunts song (which is also for charity but Ladbaby seems happy to gloss over that), and since when has sausage rolls been naff all to do with Christmas?

Him and his infantile antics just annoy me! There seems to be an idea now with social media where anyone with limited ability and in most cases intelligence can suddenly do a stupid dance and bang, overnight fame. It's tiresome!
Sadly the decline started the minute Simon Cowell started doing Pop Idol and then XFactor.

DrSbaitso · 26/12/2021 21:54

Are we actually having a discussion on who's classier, a man who sings about sausage rolls every year or a band called The Kunts whose most famous song consists solely of the line "Boris Johnson is a fucking cunt"?

Totally agree

Obviously it’s The Kunts

DrSbaitso · 26/12/2021 22:01

Obviously it’s The Kunts

But they get outdone by 2 Become Bum.

No, I said neither were classy

Name change for this as it's outing. They used to go to the same school as my kids. Not as salt of the earth as they make out. Really aloof and lots of attention seeking demands about preserving the privacy of their kids, while driving a branded car to school for all to see.Hmm
