Is using "Father Christmas" vs "Santa" a class signifier?

Flapjacker48 · 25/12/2021 09:22

Upper/upper middle - use "Father Christmas"

Working/lower middle - "Santa"

The "Santa" we use in the UK today is almost an original European export to American and has come back as a tackier and vulgar Santa.

So.... shall we all arrange to meet again around mid-October for the annual "Halloween is imported American shite" thread?

FedUp79 · 25/12/2021 18:05

Growing up I would definitely have said Father Christmas (MC Southerner) but probably more likely to say Santa now as that’s what my daughter has always called him.

Sounds like a plan - these English people are quite reluctant to accept information - new or old!
Minorissue · 25/12/2021 18:11

@Hospedia. Cant wait

pluggee · 25/12/2021 18:17

It seems that certain people feel English approach is the “correct” approach some people need to get out more - I despair of your uneducated closed vision.

This

pluggee · 25/12/2021 18:19

This. This site is littered with goady threads like this, full of pathetic snobbery, from poorly educated, narrow-minded people 'down south' who assume everyone 'oop north' is a thick lower class chav.

If they took their head out of their arse for a second or two, they would see there are many interesting cities, towns, villages, and attractions outside bloody LONDON! Frankly, I wouldn't live there if you paid me. For sooooooooooo many reasons.

It's not representative of Londoners though so pls don't tar us with the same brush.

Theremoresefulday · 25/12/2021 18:24

I’d rather be lower class than a racist op, but you do you.

I'm in!
mintich · 25/12/2021 18:32

Scottish and "posh" and say Santa. We don't use Father Christmas, no one I know does. I think it's an English thing

HeronLanyon · 25/12/2021 18:34

American childhood - Santa Claus - never ever just ‘Santa’
Fathers Christmas first encountered here in UK London 1970s onwards and always seemed class connected to say FC -upper middle said it lower middle friends seemed to say ‘Santa’.
Then northern dp opened eyes to it being a regional thing also - north east string FC usage.

tinse1 · 25/12/2021 18:50

This is a total non-issue.

Same as it was on the thread last week.

StoneofDestiny · 25/12/2021 18:58

Santa in Scotland regardless of your income/background (if that is what you mean by 'class').

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/12/2021 18:58

Middle class English/Scottish and we use Santa. Yabu not to realise there are other ways of doing things outside of the south east.

dashoflime · 25/12/2021 19:01

I like a good Mumsnet class thread as much ch as the next person but jeez.....you couldn't have taken a break for Christmas day?

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 25/12/2021 19:01

I CANNOT DO THIS THREAD AGAIN 😆🤦🏻‍♀️😬😳

Geamhradh · 25/12/2021 19:03

I think you might have missed about 16. Seems to be three a day at the moment.
Frazzled2207 · 25/12/2021 19:08

Father Christmas to me. Kids normally say Santa, to me it’s an American import

DialSquare · 25/12/2021 19:08

@JurgensCakeBabyJesus

I grew up very working class in the East end of London (pre gentrification), both of my parents left school at 14 with no qualifications, so definitely not middle class. They and I say father Christmas and always have, my whole family do.
Same here.
PomPomSugar · 25/12/2021 19:09

I have always called him Father Christmas. My daughter calls him Santa because of YouTube/the film Elf/etc

Tillsforthrills · 25/12/2021 19:12

Not another class identifier thread Confused

Thedogscollar · 25/12/2021 19:16

@SlashBeef

Genuinely, who gives a shit?
This with all the Santa/Father Christmas jingly fucking bells going.
seething1234 · 25/12/2021 19:17

Santy here too. I'm in Ireland we don't have this whole class debate that is a constant on mumsnet but the Santa vs Santy would be seen as a regional thing and depending on where you are from.

Fatarseflanagan09 · 25/12/2021 19:25

I say call him what you like as long as it’s not Kriss Kringle, I heard that on an American tv show today and it sounds friggin stupid.

WaterBottle123 · 25/12/2021 19:34

Weird I thought it was the other way round. We're upper middle

BlueRoseInBloom · 25/12/2021 19:51

What a nasty sneery goady thread to post on Christmas day.

Peace and good will to all, eh!

So long as you're not below upper middle class, that is. Then you're being judged for saying Santa.

Like I said, how sneery.

Sharp contrast with the poster who wanted to share her joy that her non verbal child said thank you unexpectedly.
