So, short story, DD (2) awaiting PCR results. We've 12 hours before we need to leave for my mum's for xmas (or call it off). We've no kitchen. I have a 2 ring camping stove and a microwave. No room for anything else. Suggestions please for christmassy/ special feeling meals I can do?

Sliced roast beef in gravy?

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/12/2021 16:41

It really all depends what you have in the house to cook with.

Got to go buy stuff tomorrow. Currently fridge is full of Christmas stuff we can't use and will go to my mum's in the morning.

Can she cook you a dinner and drop it off?
Perhaps not if you need to leave in 12 hours...

If not are any local cafes etc doing deliveries on Christmas Day? Some are by us.

Mackmama · 23/12/2021 16:47

Fry up maybe? I know it’s not that exciting but we only have it about once a year so the kids think it is.

Hobbesmanc · 23/12/2021 16:48

Get a rotisserie chicken- carve and keep warm in gravy. Pan fry premade stuffing and pigs in blankets. Par boil some potatoes tomorrow then saute them nice and crispy. Buy posh veg that can be miked. Spouts, mashed carrots etc.

Pud can also be microwaved.

Sorry - hope it works out for you

Pork saltimbocca www.deliaonline.com/recipes/collections/delias-summer-collection/pork-saltimbocca

Salmon, cold cuts, potato salad, coleslaw
Fry a few scallops with bacon for a starter.
Buy a trifle for desert. Eat nice cheese and biscuits.

Unfortunately not. It'd be a 5 hour round trip minimum for her!

All local places delivering had last orders earlier this week, I've already tried a few!

Unfortunately don't have anyone near by to borrow anything off.

Frozen mash could be a fall back with cooked meat and boil the veg on the stove.

girlmom21 · 23/12/2021 16:55

Boiled gammon?

FangsForTheMemory · 23/12/2021 16:55

Fillet steak. Dead easy to do and you can microwave whole potatoes and mash them (if you've got a potato ricer even easier). Frozen peas/beans and a packet of peppercorn sauce.

PineappleWilson · 23/12/2021 16:56

What will the 2 year old eat? I'd focus on food she'll have, for this year, so maybe pasta etc. Not great but if you have a toddler, a camping stove is a fire risk if it gets knocked etc.

You can always get a ready meal chicken roast dinner for the microwave if you must, or you may find that a friend / neighbour will plate one for you.

Thepineapplemystery · 23/12/2021 16:56

How long does that take? We've only a small bottle of gas, not sure if the gas place is open tomorrow or not.

I'd probably do meatballs with cranberry sauce, gravy, peas and mashed potato (ikea style! Grin)

Then trifle or microwave Christmas pudding, and lots of cheese.

I'm going to go against sensible suggestions here. Brie and cranberry toasties/grilled sandwiches. With other bits of course but it's devine(and I may be slightly obsessed this Christmas with them..)

We've been cooking on it for 4 months already so I'm used to it. Toddler eats pretty much everything as does the 5yo.

Some great ideas people thank you.

Could you afford to buy a cheap slow cooker? You can get them for around £15 and it would give you some more options!

We can afford it but I don't know if the local supermarkets sell them and it'd have to go on the floor which I'm not keen on.

I know people live like this all the time, it was just so unexpected at Christmas. Extension was due for completion in September, but that's another story!

Have you got a bbq or could you borrow one. That would give you a few options.

Gammons like 20mins per 500g plus an extra 20 minutes but I don't know about the gas!

BBQ is a good idea.
