So, short story, DD (2) awaiting PCR results. We've 12 hours before we need to leave for my mum's for xmas (or call it off). We've no kitchen. I have a 2 ring camping stove and a microwave. No room for anything else. Suggestions please for christmassy/ special feeling meals I can do?

Unfortunately don't have anyone near by to borrow anything off.

do you not have neighbours?

id be on next-door or facebook local asking for a loan

how far is the nearest house?

Blueeyedgirl21 · 23/12/2021 17:12

Can you get a slow cooker from a super market? Big asda and tesco will have them
I’d do a big chicken or beef stew, choc fondue for dessert with marshmallow on sticks, loads of cheese and crackers, nice wine or beer and movies on.

SilverRingahBells · 23/12/2021 17:12

Salmon/cods roe, sour cream, chopped onions and blinis as a starter. Nothing like it for starting your Christmas dinner off with a little touch of bling. Microwave the blinis for a moment or dry fry them for thirty seconds.

Id love the idea of a bbq over cooking on a stove top. The kids would love that.

Feelingoood · 23/12/2021 17:14

Paella is easy in one pan. Also stir fry.
Most Thai, Chinese dishes are made in one wok. If that helps?

milly74 · 23/12/2021 17:16

slow cooker. crock pot or a foodi?

yoshiblue · 23/12/2021 17:17

You don't mention if you have a slow cooker, but I would personally buy a cheap one. You can then make a really easy meal - pulled pork, gammon - do on sandwiches with stuffing/apple sauce? Then Xmas pudding in the microwave

Wilkolampshade · 23/12/2021 17:26

Hi OP. I've cooked with your current resources for extended periods too due to refurbs or having to squat somewhere. It's the sort of challenge that starts well and one is generally chipper about but can get wearing on occasion. You have ALL my sympathies.
The most successful things I ever managed in my kitchen made full use of olive/cold meat antipasti, pan fried scallops, calimari (these were AMAZING) served with an aoli and decent bread. I made a blindin' ragu once, heated it up in the microwave and stirred it through papperdelle cooked on the hob. Masses of chopped fresh parsley and grated parmesan. But best of all, go middle Eastern so use cous cous for your carb - no hob needed-fill it full of bright green herbs, pomegranate seeds, lemon and slivered almonds and fry some chicken to go with. A Yoghurt and mint sauce and pitta warmed in the toaster. Bingo.
Puddings a chocate microwave cake Or homemade cinammon doughnuts eaten hot from the oil, crispy and thickly coated with sugar.
Good luck!!!

Fillet steak, cut up into strips, use to make steak stroganoff with mushrooms and cream, serve with microwave pouch rice.

For a starter, charcuterie from your already purchased supplies, or what ever is available, smoked salmon etc.
Similar for pudding, what is available. If nothing, then ice cream topped with fruits in syrup, lots of jars of this available ATM.

Can you rustle up a cheese board? Civilisation hasn't quite ground to a halt if there is cheese! Wine Wine

FelicityBeedle · 23/12/2021 17:30

Try your local FB page, similar has happened on mine and lots of people offered to bring them plates of food from their dinners

alongwayhome · 23/12/2021 17:34

Tbh honest in this situation I'd bin off ideas of a cobbled together Christmas dinner altogether and go full on luxury buffet.

Crusty bread, cheeses, cooked meats, crudités, dips, pate, fruit. Followed my favourite desserts.

Stuffin · 23/12/2021 17:42

I would scrap trying to do a Xmas dinner and go for a cold buffet full of all the things you love to eat.

Stuffin · 23/12/2021 17:43

Just seen previous poster suggested the same.

A lot less stress and it is always a treat to keep going back for something else Grin

StormzyinaTCup · 23/12/2021 17:54

Just to add that I think slow cooker is the way to go and very useful post Christmas too (especially in your current situation). I was in Sainsburys today and I saw they had them in there. You could do a lovely Turkey casserole (using a packet of fresh diced Turkey) and rustle up some sides with the added bonus of putting it on in the morning and leaving it to slow cook while you enjoy presents etc.

Tirnanogg · 23/12/2021 18:19

Chicken and cranberry curry - it's very simple, only uses two pans (and a microwave if you can get hold of some naan bread) and definitely tastes festive. We were in a similar situation a week ago in terms of the extension and it was lovely!

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 23/12/2021 18:28

One Christmas we had very low gas pressure so could only just manage to heat something on the hob. No other cooking appliances. I think we had lukewarm soup and peanuts.

It was definitely memorable!

Soontobe60 · 23/12/2021 18:32

I’d be ordering a take away.

WashableVelvet · 23/12/2021 19:19

Lobster and macaroni cheese? No need to brown it under the grill, delicious just with the creamy sauce

Movinghouseatlast · 23/12/2021 19:23

Turkey saltimbocca, sautéed potatoes, sprouts with bacon and chestnuts, parsnip and carrot mash. Christmas pudding as usual.

Sounds rather good actually!

PickAChew · 23/12/2021 19:25

I was going to suggest something like this, www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/venison-sausage-chestnut-casserole but you said you don't have much gas. In that case, I'd suggest either a posh ready meal or just a really posh buffet.

BeanyBops · 23/12/2021 19:37

Start a new tradition and order pizza!

Kshhuxnxk · 23/12/2021 19:40

Chances are you'll get a slowcooker from Argos delivered tomorrow!

Kshhuxnxk · 23/12/2021 19:40

Or takeaway delivered?

Jessicabrassica · 23/12/2021 19:57

If someone on my local fb group shared this,I'd happily drop a slow cooker off to them.

CaptainMorgansMistress · 23/12/2021 20:03

If there’s a pub or restaurant nearby, you could give them a call? Odds are they have loads of cancellations and too much produce already so might be very happy to sort you out with a takeaway version of their meal?
