Christmas morning Covid test being demanded

Quarks69 · 22/12/2021 08:27

Is everyone else having these? My sister in law has demanded this from my side of the family as her elderly parents are going to be at the dinner. With a family of five and three are my busy teens I am worried that we could end up with no xmas day if one of us is asymptomatic (for the second year running obvs).

I do get that we are in bonkers times, but Was so looking Forward to seeing everyone, including my parents, that this is making me cross...isn’t this the point of the jabs!?

We have a mild variant

Delta still exists. HTH.

OP isn’t legally obliged to test as she has no symptoms. SiL is inventing rules based on her own moral standards, not the law and getting upset when people don’t want to follow them. That’s a SIL problem not an OP problem so put the ball in SIL’s court.

Squellyolwelly · 22/12/2021 14:38

We’re testing before seeing my cousins tomorrow because their grandad has cancer and they don’t want to take it back to him.
I can’t imagine why anyone would be annoyed about testing if it keeps the more vulnerable safe??

It’ll suck if you are positive, but just have Christmas another day if that’s the case surely? I didn’t realise Christmas dinner was more important than people’s lives 😂

The OP has a simple choice - go, as the invitation stands which includes the test. Or don’t go.

There’s no need for ridiculous drama because her SIL wishes to make things as safe as possible for her vulnerable parents.

The OP is perfectly entitled to stay home and make her own dinner if she doesn’t want to do so

GrannytoaUnicorn · 22/12/2021 14:42

"Demanded?!" Why do people on MN always have to use such emotive, exaggerated language?! Nobody demanded, you mean you were asked. Probably politely.

Also, if you're going to be around elderly and/or vulnerable people then you absolutely should have an LFT!!

LFTs aren't to be used with symptoms. They should be used two times a week, to catch covid before you have been out and about very much, spreading it to god knows how many.

OP is obliged to follow the rules of the homeowner. Manners and respect, do you possess those qualities?

@Siameasy - you're absolutely right.

It's not the law. It's common decency to try to help those who may be anxious about the health of the people they care. Some of us have it, some of us lack it.

It's sticking a cotton bud up your nose or having the guts to say you won't and taking the fall out from that decision. Not being a gutless wonder and sniggering behind your hand because you told a fib like a naughty little kid.

CantBeAssed · 22/12/2021 14:43

Some people just love to be argumentative and awkward for no logical reason! Just do the test! It's a simple matter of having a bit of respect for those around you🙄

You cannot be serious!

As MN would say.... SIL house, SIL rules.

You are so right about the emotive language! Drives me mad!

We’ve all agreed to test Xmas eve and Christmas Eve morning.

Siameasy · 22/12/2021 14:51

It doesn’t say it’s SIL’s house. Obviously if you chose to refuse to test then SIL may predictably choose to say no entry. That would be part of the decision-making process.

Except OP has said she is fully vaxxed and thinks everyone else eligible should be by now.

And she tests twice a week.

I know because I RTFT.

True. And if SIL is asking for the LFTs but at someone else's party, she also has the choice of saying she and her parents won't come if the LFTs aren't done. Then the host would have to make the final decision. But lying about doing the tests is childish either way.
Biggreenduffel · 22/12/2021 14:56

* Hang on, you don't want to test incase one of you is asymptomatic? So you want to live in ignorant bliss and go spread covid to her elderly parents so you can all have a lovely christmas day?*

This x 100

heyday · 22/12/2021 14:58

My whole family will do lateral flow test before we meet up.

Loveinacoldishclimate · 22/12/2021 14:59

But why is it in anyway inconvenient to take a LFT before seeing elderly relatives if she already does them routinely?

Im fairly sure now this is silly goading nonsense.

FuckeryOmbudsman · 22/12/2021 15:03

If it is 'goading nonsense' it's served the very useful purpose of managing to stay in AIBU with a poll what shows 94% of people have n truck with it

Orchid876 · 22/12/2021 15:07

Yes of course we'll all be testing before we visit older relatives on Christmas day. And the reason you don't what to test is incase you're positive and it ruins your Christmas say? Wow.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 22/12/2021 15:08

I had family over at the weekend - all 11 people tested beforehand. Nobody minded. It really was no big deal.

Siameasy · 22/12/2021 15:09

I don’t think lying is “childish”, in fact children tend to blurt out the truth when it’s not welcome. It’s an option if OP is happy to do it.

InspiralCarpets · 22/12/2021 15:09

Can't even get LFTs round here! Haven't been able to for weeks

Friendviv1987 · 22/12/2021 15:10

Yes LFT if visiting people is the sensible approach. Surely you would rather miss Christmas Day and keep your parents safe than risk infecting them ! Get a chicken and some veg to have at home if LFT positive …it really is that easy!

TuftyMarmoset · 22/12/2021 15:10

Lying about doing an LFT or about the result shouldn’t be an option that crosses anyone’s mind, it’s an absolute dick move.
