Christmas morning Covid test being demanded

Quarks69 · 22/12/2021 08:27

Is everyone else having these? My sister in law has demanded this from my side of the family as her elderly parents are going to be at the dinner. With a family of five and three are my busy teens I am worried that we could end up with no xmas day if one of us is asymptomatic (for the second year running obvs).

I do get that we are in bonkers times, but Was so looking Forward to seeing everyone, including my parents, that this is making me cross...isn’t this the point of the jabs!?

@Toplowlight

I am genuinely surprised at how many lfts are being done. We have a mild variant and assuming vaccinated Contacts little chance of serious illness..I can see now how the populace are arguing themselves into a Potential lockdown.

Do you really not see how much more likely a further lockdown is if everyone follows your practice and refuses to test in case they are positive and have to cancel plans? One of the best ways to avoid lockdown is to test regularly and thereby reduce transmission. Burying your head in the sand and continuing to spread the virus because you don’t want your plans to be wrecked is the kind of behaviour that might result in an enforced lockdown because people can’t be trusted to behave responsibly.

Exactly. Wish we could put all the non testers & the non vaxxers (who can have it, but choose not to) on their own island.
Raaaaaaarr · 22/12/2021 13:18

Almost exact same ask of me and I have zero issues. Who wants to cause illness for elderly family members if they can avoid it? Simple.

VerbenaGirl · 22/12/2021 13:19

We are all willingly LFTing before we see family. We’ll all be absolutely gutted if any of us are positive and we miss out on seeing people, but there is no way I could put our older and more vulnerable family members at risk.

PeeAche · 22/12/2021 13:21

I'd just like to add that my BIL has just tested positive on an LFT. He went out clubbing in London the night before he travelled back to stay with his elderly parents in the countryside.

He is now missing Christmas. He made his choices. He's totally asymptomatic. Do your tests!

Translation: "But if I test and we have it then we won't have Christmas SadSad"

Ok so don't test, possibly infect SILs DPs with covid and see how familial relations will be then Hmm

Alternatively, do you own Xmas dinner at home and then no one will "demand" tests.

DrSbaitso · 22/12/2021 13:22

@gogohm

We are taking them tomorrow then no more testing as agreed as a family.
Why test on ghe 23rd but no later?
gwenneh · 22/12/2021 13:24

Yes, we are doing the same. My grandparents are CEV and even though they are double jabbed, boosted, AND have had covid already we are still testing before we get together.

I have contingency plan food set aside if one of us should test positive and we'll get together after Christmas.

Hellosunshiner · 22/12/2021 13:24

Yes we are all testing. Not worth the risk of passing the virus on to not test.

shakethat · 22/12/2021 13:26

Completely reasonable and the sensible thing to do. We are all taking LF's on the day.

What? Why?

Do you only wear you seatbelt on the M4, not the M25?

What a bonkers decision.

DickMabutt73962 · 22/12/2021 13:29

I am worried that we could end up with no xmas day if one of us is asymptomatic

Does this mean that you would happily unknowingly infect others? Seeing as if they were asymptomatic you wouldn't knowConfused

Agree!

Such emotional language "demand", not asked or requested?

It's demand to make DIL sound unreasonable, which she's not.

FeelingSoGrinchy · 22/12/2021 13:37

Sounds like OP is more bothered about not having to do any legwork for Christmas, than the health of anyone else, even her own parents. Nice.

WutheringHeights66 · 22/12/2021 13:39

I’ve said exactly the same thing, and if any of my lovely DC test positive on the day then they won’t be coming and putting their gran at risk, we are all fully vaccinated and had boosters.

If I test positive Christmas is off and no one is coming.

I don’t get why you see a problem.

Chloemol · 22/12/2021 13:46

Unbelievable yet another person who doesn’t get that if asymptomatic you can still transmit

So you are prepared to go somewhere, elderly people, no test just in case

How would you feel if one of you was asymptomatic and passed it on and they became ill

We are all testing before we meet, lots are now testing before social events

Good job covid knows not to spread after the 23rd.
daisychain01 · 22/12/2021 13:47

@Thatsplentyjack

Hang on, you don't want to test incase one of you is asymptomatic? So you want to live in ignorant bliss and go spread covid to her elderly parents so you can all have a lovely christmas day?
If there was a 👍 button I'd Like this post.

C'mon OP what's wrong with you? You just want to bury your head in the sand and carry in as normal. Even though others could be affected by your ostrich impression!

liveforsummer · 22/12/2021 13:51

Well if one of you is asymptomatic then surely you want to know so you don't go and infect elderly vulnerable family members?!

DayzeeDaresYou · 22/12/2021 13:52

Dh and I tested yesterday. We will test again early Christmas Eve a few hours before dd and her dh visit. They’ve both been testing regularly too.

If it keeps people safe it’s worth doing.

lesenfantsdelesperance · 22/12/2021 13:52

I don't really understand why you wouldn't do a test, now you've understood that vaccines don't offer 100% protection. I think it's very easy to sit in judgement of others though, not everybody finds accessing news easy and some prefer not to dwell too much on covid, so I do have sympathy with the OP not understanding. We don't know so far that it is a mind strain though @Quarks69, that has yet to be proven, especially as it is mostly spreading among young people.

liveforsummer · 22/12/2021 13:52

And fwiw I'm testing tomorrow before we go for a family pre Xmas meet up. No one vulnerable but one family member with a flight booked she could really do to get on

lesenfantsdelesperance · 22/12/2021 13:53

I think it is true though that lots of people don't understand this, but they really don't, it's not just being awkward, it's just covid news fatigue.

No we are trying to stop a lockdown by not spreading it if we are positive

Ok it’s supposed to be mild, however you are still ill, and setting aside why anyone in their right mind would want to be ill with anything, and if ill are likely to not only spread it, but also be off work

Let’s use an example of 10 firefighters on a shift. One tests positive doing a LFT although has no symptoms so that’s one off work. However he doesn’t test but goes to work, he then infects half the crew, so now 5 of work, and no fire fighters available as they can get no cover! Extreme, yes, but this is what is going to happen and I am so surprised you don’t get it

The point is to stop the spread to allow businesses, schools, emergency services transport and all the rest to carry on, not have a large amount of workforce of ill

As to your SIZk parents, what’s mild for you may not be for them

Try thinking of the bigger picture, not the obvious inconvenience to you

my8thMNusername · 22/12/2021 13:56

Completely reasonable. Why wouldn't you? Something to hide?

Emerald5hamrock · 22/12/2021 13:56

I'm double vaccinated and reasonably fit, healthy bmi and I was floored with covid, still feeling it 3 weeks later.
If there was any way of avoiding passing the virus on to an elderly person I wouldn't question it.
