Christmas morning Covid test being demanded

Quarks69 · 22/12/2021 08:27

Is everyone else having these? My sister in law has demanded this from my side of the family as her elderly parents are going to be at the dinner. With a family of five and three are my busy teens I am worried that we could end up with no xmas day if one of us is asymptomatic (for the second year running obvs).

I do get that we are in bonkers times, but Was so looking Forward to seeing everyone, including my parents, that this is making me cross...isn’t this the point of the jabs!?

OP posts:
unfar · 22/12/2021 10:24

We will not be testing. My dad is coming to visit, he's triple jabbed but in his 70's - which i'v seen some on here class as elderly. He certainly doesn't expect us to test and shock horror he didn't expect our young DC to miss out on panto etc for his sake.

worriedatthemoment · 22/12/2021 10:24

@HeronLanyon exactly and then you read on here people are doing them daily , i ordered some still not here and none in local pharmacists we have 3 left between 4 but technically my youngest had covid just over 60 days ago so shouldn't do one
So we can only do ours on xmas eve when we go go my mums the remaining days we can't and i guess if we get it then it may of spread anyway

finished31 · 22/12/2021 10:25

Just say you tested and it's negative. I'm not testing unless I have symptoms. Lfts are the most reliable anyway so u could still be positive even with a lat flow.

Another twatty comment

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/12/2021 10:26

The point of jabs is that if you get covid you hopefully won’t die and not need to use the nhs

I of three times a week as I work with a vulnerable premature baby

If I meet someone I lf

I don’t get why someone wouldn’t. You don’t want to spread it

edwinbear · 22/12/2021 10:26

DH and I are both currently very ill with it, both double jabbed and boosted in October. Being jabbed doesn’t guarantee you won’t suffer with it, and we’re relatively, young, fit and healthy. So, yes, YABU. Just do the tests to keep everyone well.

Fizzbangwallop · 22/12/2021 10:26

Your SIL is absolutely right to ask everyone to do an LFT before going to her house. It’s selfish not to test yourselves every single time you are seeing anyone vulnerable at the moment.

Yeah I mean God forbid kids missing out on panto 🙄
firefly123 · 22/12/2021 10:28

Yes we are having to do this! Not sure what will happen if we are positive!! May get a leg of lamb in just in case Hmm

@PoleFairy

I get what you mean OP. It's a when does it end thing. If you woke up with a cold xmas morning (pre corona times) you wouldnt isolate the whole house and cancel xmas, you would steer clear of hugging/kissing the elderly there. The jabs and boosters are supposed to make this a routine illness (I have it atm and have a slight runny nose and cough I've had worse colds at xmas in previous years and have cracked on as normal!) So why are we actively trying to seek it out and make us miserable
1) A cold can't kill you or give you Long Covid symptoms. Covid is potentially much more severe than a cold (your experience is not universal).
 1. Covid - especially Omicron - is incredibly infectius. If you have it and you are inside with a group of people, you will likely pass it on to all of them. Covid is not spread by hugging and kissing, it's spread by particles in your breath collecting in a space to be breathed in by others.

Testing is the opposite of "seeking it out." It's limiting the spread.

Because it's mild for you but may not be for an elderly or vulnerable relative. Because both those categories can find it harder to fight off illness, even a cold. Quite frankly, it's a really selfish attitude to have to think just because it's mild for you, it will be the same for everyone else so crack on.
Lesserspottedmama · 22/12/2021 10:29

It’s utter nonsense, your SIL is a virtue signaller OP. Common sense prevails as to if you are well enough to be amongst people, anyone who can’t see that is a fool.

Ski4130 · 22/12/2021 10:29

Totally reasonable to request you all do LFT, we're doing the same before going to the in laws on Christmas day and my Mum's on Boxing day.

5keletor · 22/12/2021 10:30

YABVU, especially if elderly/vulnerable people will be there. We will be doing LFTs before seeing my parents, as will they. One of them is ECV, we are all doing it as a courtesy to each other, no one demanded. I wouldn't want to unwittingly give them covid, expecially with the extra risk for them.

worriedatthemoment · 22/12/2021 10:30

@IDontLikeMyself i otdered mine sunday and I'm still waiting , normaly they are quick but not this time

Just test, It's straightforward and quick.

Are they also sheeple?
JKDinomum · 22/12/2021 10:30

Totally normal and sensible. We are testing every day between end of school and going to my mum's for Xmas.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 22/12/2021 10:30

I would imagine you being in a school is a worry to sil?? This puts her mind at rest and lets her risk assess that she did as much as possible. My sil and i met outside with masks (both teach), happy to do so

worriedatthemoment · 22/12/2021 10:31

@IDontLikeMyself if you go on your link you will see there are none left for delivery today

From a Covid point of view, yes it is elderly. I'm 60 and I'm in the zone, though less so than your father.

He certainly doesn't expect us to test.

Nice of him not to expect it but I would test anyway.

Divebar2021 · 22/12/2021 10:32

I would get some food in reserve OP because it could be your SIL or her relatives who test positive so you might find you can’t visit anyway - regardless of whether you test or not.

Yuledo · 22/12/2021 10:32
@NandorTheRelentless i don't know what the point in your post was. i did get a pcr. my point is lateral flows didn't pick up an infection, so all you people who are so smug in doing your lateral flows, you could still bloody have it!
Yes, it’s not infallible. But it will pick up some. We are doing our best to reduce risk, even if we can’t eliminate it totally.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 22/12/2021 10:32

Yes and if I get ANY symptoms (which now include a lot of different things not just the original three) I will get a PCR test and if anyone I’ve been in contact with gets a positive then I will get a PCR test (like I did two weeks ago when one of the children at school was positive).

Good to know that as long as I'm well enough to be around him, my immunosuppressed dad with a couple of health conditions putting him on the shielding list would be just fine if I gave him covid.

We have frozen joint and roast potatoes in just in case.
