Christmas morning Covid test being demanded

859 replies

Quarks69 · 22/12/2021 08:27

Is everyone else having these? My sister in law has demanded this from my side of the family as her elderly parents are going to be at the dinner. With a family of five and three are my busy teens I am worried that we could end up with no xmas day if one of us is asymptomatic (for the second year running obvs).

I do get that we are in bonkers times, but Was so looking Forward to seeing everyone, including my parents, that this is making me cross...isn’t this the point of the jabs!?

We can't get LFTs around here for love nor money, no wonder with everyone testing every time they go anywhere. I got given a pack a week ago when I got boosted, we've already used 3 tests. I've ordered some for delivery online but no idea if they'll arrive before Christmas.

Borland · 22/12/2021 09:51

@catchingzzzeds

Selfish and quite frankly utterly stupid.

It's partly because of attitudes like yours that we're in such a mess still.

For what it's worth I'm fully vaccinated and currently have Covid, I've felt so ill it has shocked me. I would hate for an elderly relative to suffer like I have the last couple of weeks.

What do you think about that OP? Still willing to bury your head in the sand so your 'busy teens' don't miss out on Christmas? It's not up to you to put other people at risk just because you don't like your SIL to 'demand' something perfectly reasonable of you.

@catchingzzzeds Hope you feel better soon!

ancientgran · 22/12/2021 09:52

@BluebellsGreenbells

My god.. You think you've seen peak selfishness and then you read thiis.

I disagree. OP works with unvaccinated children, has teens in unvaccinated school settings, no ventilation, no masks required, no social distancing and yet I see so many people complain about meeting up with one unvaccinated friend for an outdoor coffee, screaming murderer!!!

The difference here is that teachers are high risk to themselves everyday - every single day and parents don’t want to test their small children because it might traumatize them or means a parent has to stay home for 10 days, or they can’t get the other kids to school or lose pay or even lose bookings for the panto. It they are happy to not test close their eyes and hope for the best - sod the school staff.

There view on Covid is very different to the stay at home worker who gets a weekly shopping delivery and never sets food outside. Can you not see that?

They will be mixing with elderly people for the day so not at all the same as being at work with teens. Surely an intelligent adult would understand that particularly if it has been pointed out to them.
worriedatthemoment · 22/12/2021 09:52

@greenlynx I think i would be pissed if someone asked me to send a picture that means they don't trust you and anyway its easy to send a picture of old one if your that way
I do lft but none of my friends or family have asked for evidence

Quarks69 · 22/12/2021 09:52

@SoupDragon

I am fully jabbed, wear a mask and take lfts bi-weekly.

So why on Earth are you complaining about taking a bloody test??

We test for work because the majority of children are not vaccinated and it’s in my contract 🙂

And yes of course I will take another bloody test. But if Covid is going nowhere anytime soon,This relentless testing Of vaccinated people seems like pushing back the tide with your bare hands. Vax and get on with life.
@NandorTheRelentless i don't know what the point in your post was. i did get a pcr. my point is lateral flows didn't pick up an infection, so all you people who are so smug in doing your lateral flows, you could still bloody have it!
If you have symptoms, do not take a LFT test. Stay at home and take a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test

don't have a lot of trust in lateral flow tests as mine was repeatedly negative when i had symptoms, got a PCR and was positive.

You had symptoms? Lft don't work if you have symptoms

PurpleDaisies · 22/12/2021 09:54

You had symptoms? Lft don't work if you have symptoms

Rubbish. They do.

They’re not accurate enough to rule out covid. That’s why you need a pcr for that.

CoffeeMuggins · 22/12/2021 09:54

three are my busy teens I am worried that we could end up with no xmas day if one of us is asymptomatic

Are you fucking kidding?

NextChristmas · 22/12/2021 09:54

We're testing every second day up to elderly relatives visiting. Thinking that if any of us test positive before Christmas day then at least we'll have time to work out how to feed them and generally make sure they are ok if they spend it alone.

JabNotInArm · 22/12/2021 09:54

I am genuinely surprised at how many lfts are being done. We have a mild variant and assuming vaccinated Contacts little chance of serious illness..I can see now how the populace are arguing themselves into a Potential lockdown.

And I can see how we'll end up in another bloody lockdown given people like you, OP, can't be arsed with a 15-30 min free test which might reduce transmission dramatically

They were handing out tests at Asda earlier in the week, don't know if they still are, but that may help
toomuchlaundry · 22/12/2021 09:56

Handing LFTs out at our local supermarket too yesterday

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/12/2021 09:56

If you’ve got “busy teens” that’s an especially good reason to do the tests. If someone is asymptomatic you really don’t want to be passing it on to elderly relatives.

A test is to see if you have got it or not. If you test negative, all well and good. If you test positive, “what a relief we did the tests or we might have given them Covid”.

Jenhen89 · 22/12/2021 09:56

You have no right to be cross. It’s the sensible thing to do to perform a lateral flow before going anywhere with other people, particularly those who are vulnerable. My mum has been asking us to do lateral flows before any events and I wouldn’t consider being “cross” for a second. Have a word with yourself. What’s more important, people’s health or one day of commercialism?

Wandamakesporridge · 22/12/2021 09:56

Yes we’ll be testing, we don’t even need to be asked.

We aren’t ’talking ourselves into another lockdown’. If everyone was smart and tested before meeting up, and isolated if positive, then we wouldn’t need a lockdown!

Our family recently had Covid, initially picked up on LFTs. Teenage DD had no symptoms except for a headache on one of the days. DH had no symptoms until day 3. If we hadn’t done tests we’d never have known and spread it around.
I am double jabbed so my symptoms were mild, but still not pleasant, and I absolutely would not want my elderly parents to get it.

If one of us does tests positive and we have to stay home, it’s sad but surely better than the guilt of knowing you’ve passed it on to others?

We have planned for all eventualities in case we can’t see family, seems sensible - chicken and sausages in the freezer etc.

As for the poster who suggested lying - unbelievable - very Christmas spirited of you… Sad

😍 that’s exactly it.

Thank you for explaining it bette than I could @BluebellsGreenbells.

We all have a different perception of risk, depending on our experiences.

Perspective needed.

toomuchlaundry · 22/12/2021 09:59

But you are meeting up with elderly people, with your interactions with many unvaccinated young people I can’t believe you are complaining about doing a test. I would have thought you would have done one automatically.

timeisnotaline · 22/12/2021 09:59

No I think it’s more the headlines about the nhs being asked to prepare for a mass casualty type event post Christmas. People don’t get admitted to hospital because they feel like they have a minor cold.

galacticpixels · 22/12/2021 09:59

I'm happy for the extra line of defense. It's better than nothing. We test before meeting people without being asked to - we just popped over to DP's elderly parents for a cup of tea yesterday evening and tested before leaving the house. It's such an easy thing to do.

greenlynx · 22/12/2021 10:00

@worriedatthemoment
I wouldn’t need a photo from my sister as a prove or from my SILs however I’ve got feeling that OP has different relationship with her SIL and doesn’t like her, hence her reaction on such a simple sensible request.

godmum56 · 22/12/2021 10:02

@ReeseWitherfork

Personal I'd do one Christmas Eve evening. I know everyone says they can change quickly, but dealing with potentially bad news on Christmas Day isn't an ideal scenario. Different situation if you've got vulnerable family members or symptoms though.
but the dealing with the bad news is the least of it...isn't a late day cancellation better than infecting people?
toomuchlaundry · 22/12/2021 10:02

But looking at @BluebellsGreenbells post, you could also look at it from SIL’s perspective and think she is taking quite a risk inviting OP on Christmas Day, and why wouldn’t she ask people to do tests. Alternative is she doesn’t invite OP

JustLyra · 22/12/2021 10:02

Vax and get on with life.

Which is a fine stance for someone not elderly or with any health conditions.

If you want to mix with people who are old or ill then extra caution is needed unless 'getting on with life' includes not giving a shit about the people around us.

If you don't want to trouble yourself with more LFTs then decline the invitation.

HeronLanyon · 22/12/2021 10:02

It would help if I can find any ! Day five of trying to lick some up with home delivery to my area not available each time I’ve tried. Holding on to my last remaining two but should have been testing more over last week.

Houseplantmad · 22/12/2021 10:02

We're testing, as recommended, before going out to see people etc. Our friends are doing the same. Seems sensible and considerate.
