AIBU to call police on shithead dope smoking neighbour

Lived here four years, didn't say anything to them for the first three as intimidated by them and a woman on my own with a child. This year I've tackled them a couple of times, it's unpleasant, I can smell it in my son's room, sort of thing. Always denied st first and then oh ok I'll do my best. Tonight is the strongest I've smelt it in ages, literally it's got in my hall living room, son's room, it's fucking everywhere. So I knock and say look, can you dial it back a bit, blow into a cushion or whatever you do, this isn't nice for me, and the woman (partner of spliffhesd) just starts raging at me, you can't possibly smell anything because we've got this sheet at the door (holding it up), you're mental, he's dying and he needs an operation and he's only had two spliffs, you're a really horrible person [because I was laughing at this point] ...phoned the cops who said they can't come out just for the smell of blow, I said what about shouting in the stairwell, he said he'd note it. This is shit.

My MIL had to smoke weed when she was dying of cancer of the pancreas as it gave a bit of relief.

I doubt you are in a position to know whether or not your neighbour is dying.

Itisileclair · 22/12/2021 04:01

Yeah you're right I don't have details as such. I'm just going on his wife telling me he's "got a bad chest" and that the "pollution in the vents" and "creatures in the roof" that "lifts in the wind" are all bringing him to the brink of death, and drawing my own conclusions from that.

" 'is breevins bad again"

Wow OP! Firstly if you are still awake please stop reading now, and rest your eyes even if you can't get to sleep. Hopefully just writing your issues down has helped you relax a little. 🥱🥱😴

Itisileclair · 22/12/2021 04:08

I am worried about repercussions. I mean I had a row with a druggie neighbour.

OP posts:
Itisileclair · 22/12/2021 04:08

This is why I can't sleep.

Report it anonymously to crimestoppers, I think, is your best bet, in terms of ensuring nobody will know it was you.

I doubt much will be done, though.

Idontlikeworms · 22/12/2021 04:15

Have you contacted the HA? They can probably do more about it than the police.

CassandraX · 22/12/2021 04:35

YANBU at all to be upset and disgusted by the intrusion. And I also understand the reluctance to confront him, or have him know you've reported him, under the circumstances. I would only call the police, though, if he is actually breaking the law where you are.

If he requires cannabis for a medical condition, there are other ways to get it into his system besides smoking it. If it's a nonsmoking block, he's not supposed to be smoking anything. You are absolutely right to report it, although I suspect that may at best result in a temporary lull - people who don't care about the public good simply don't care, and will go back to do whatever they like and whatever is easiest for them as soon as any external threat is removed.

As a side note - I live abroad and in the last few years pre-COVID had become very reluctant to travel to England. I have no idea why the cannabis there stinks to high heaven - it doesn't smell like that in any other country I've lived in or visited - and is everywhere, and most people don't seem to mind.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/12/2021 04:52

YANBU. Reporting to the HA will hopefully be effective, especially if you make a nuisance of yourself with them. Squeaky wheel.

Gingerkittykat · 22/12/2021 05:12

I've also got a heavy dope smoking neighbour and have no idea how the smell gets into my house since we have separate front and back doors and the windows are mostly shut. Even with his windows shut massive smoke clouds escape and the smell even permeates my car sometimes.

I agree with a previous poster that dope has got more and more potent smelling over the years and also people have gotten bolder about openly smoking it in public.

It sounds like contacting your HA might be the only option. Do you know if it bothers your other neighbours?

GrannytoaUnicorn · 22/12/2021 05:22

@Itisileclair

He doesn't fucking need it for medical reasons. He's a spliff head. He smokes spliff night and day which is why he is unwell. His dealers come in my apartment block. He has no medical needs apart from being a fucking addict.
How are you so familiar with his medical history OP? I feel for you and I hate Cannabis also but you can't say he has no medical issues! I have a hidden disability and people have said hat about me before, it's infuriating and categorically false
anon12345678901 · 22/12/2021 05:30

YANBU, if people want to smoke it that's their choice, but the least they could do is apologise if the smell goes in someone else's house and try and rectify the issue. It isn't a nice smell. I'd report tbh OP, but I understand what you mean about repercussions. A family member had similar, the guy eventually got thrown out, I nearly threw them a party!

Dottybackorcid · 22/12/2021 05:32

Op report it the the council environment health as it's classed as pollution and a nuisance. You can also contact both the police back and the council for antisocial behaviour as it as classed as and act where it is interfering and spoiling the enjoyment of your home and affecting you.

Ignore the pot smoking morons on mums net who will defend weed under any circumstances. He'll if a canabis grower was taking your electric they would still defend them. I had neighbors who smoked weed and it used to stink put my house, I reported them to police and handed cctv to them. I don't give a shit, it stank my house house. They ended up getting kicked out. Do I care no because it's vile and it stinks.

Notthissticky · 22/12/2021 05:57

We had this in our previous house. It's awful, it seeps through the walls. You'd have legitimate grounds for a complaint to environmental health, though in our case they wanted us to promise we'd follow the complaint all the way through, to court if it came to that. I wasn't prepared to do that.

KewMummy87 · 22/12/2021 06:18

OP if the smell is that strong then it’s possible they’re growing it. Call the police. I could not live next to this. Totally unacceptable.

Contactmap · 22/12/2021 07:46

You had cctv that records smells ?

megletthesecond · 22/12/2021 07:49

You'll have to declare it when you sell (if you own).

My neighbours do it and it wafts in the house even with windows shut. I can't do anything without making my house harder to sell Angry. They already have form for being a pain and I don't want to escalate again.

Sally872 · 22/12/2021 07:50

You laughed when they said he was ill??? Pretty rubbish, even if the illness is addiction and he is not dying (that said you can't know). The sheet shows they've made an attempt. Put a draught excluder at your own door.

gogohm · 22/12/2021 07:56

I reported my cannabis smoking neighbours to the housing association and they were gone in less than a month- we owned and a house not a flat but it rendered the garden useless, ha owned next door and said immediately they would sort it

AllTheWeetabix · 22/12/2021 08:09

YABU for laughing In her face about him dying.

Mistyplanet · 22/12/2021 08:27

Yanbu

RunRunGingerbreadMan · 22/12/2021 08:29

YANBU the stench makes me feel sick so I would definitely report it.

TheOldRazzleDazzle · 22/12/2021 08:31

@CassandraX - maybe there is hope then that if/when it is legalised the more revoltingly smelly varieties will become less prevalent. I know what you mean, and think it’s changed here too. I shared a house as a student @ 20 years ago with some lads who were VERY heavy weed smokers and you could obviously smell it, but it wasn’t unpleasant or overpowering. I smell really foul sweaty-smelling stuff most times I leave the house now, and I’m nowhere near as close to the source as I was in my student house!

As it is, no, a lot of us do mind the smell and neighbour weed issues are a regular topic on this thread. However, it’s just not cool to be bothered by it - threads always attract comments about how everyone’s doing it / it’s legal elsewhere and everyone’s just thrilled about it / it’s not as bad as alcohol / just a smell, they can do what they like in their own house. And so on. We’re in a really weird limbo legally as it is less heavily monitored than drinking - I smell it coming from cars or see people sitting in their cars openly smoking before driving off all the time now. We had a car crash outside our house a few weeks ago and two lads immediately jumped out of one of the cars and fled - their vehicle stank of it. Whereas I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone take a slug from a whisky bottle and drive off!

Supersimkin2 · 22/12/2021 08:33

‘For a medical condition’ = the dopehead’s defence. Shame it gives you lung cancer faster than 80 fags a day.
