to just get a new washing machine

My washing machine is fucked. I’ve been aware it’s playing up for a few weeks making funny noises and a very loud spin.

I’ve checked the receipt - I bought it 22/12/2020 so it’s JUST within warranty but they’ll palm
Me off with a repair and fuck knows how long that’ll take.

I have SO MUCH laundry. It’s a joke but it is what it is.

I could just order a new one and it’ll be here Monday.

But it feels profligate.

DH doesn’t mind but slightly favours a new one as it’s quicker.

What would you do?

YABU - get the repair you lazy bint
YANBU - order the new shiny one

Sorry - should’ve added that tonight my it’s given up - not spinning and I’m going to have to manually drain it.

Depends on the brand and what you paid. I think my break point is about £400 but I would probably tell DH it cost less if I wanted a new one.

I am contemplating similar with a John Lewis dishwasher, which is just shit.
Couldn’t live without a washing machine though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2021 21:47

I did .
Mine was out of warranty and for some unknown reason we didn't take out an extended one .
Also bought it from Currys rather than JL (who have brilliant warranties , our DW was refunded as it wasn't repairable )

Washing machine broke its drive belt in the forst year .
Then a couple of months back the bugger leaked .
Repairs would have worked out £250+ depending on what was wrong .
I ordered a new one from AO.com with a 5 year warranty .

A washing machine is something I cannot be without . I can muddle through without a DW or a TD . But not no WM .

Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2021 21:50

It’s a Beko and was £404.

I just can’t deal with shitty repair nonsense but it’s a lot of money if it can be fixed. I just can’t be without it for a week.

Yes - I’m the same.

Just had a new machine. Mine was 2 yrs old, and bearings had gone. The washer bloke said if are heavy usage, 6 times a week or more 3 yrs is average unless you buy Siemens or Miele. I've decided while my kids are washing creating monsters ill need a new washer more often than a kettle 🤣

MissCruellaDeVil · 18/12/2021 22:11

If it can be fixed, do it. You can do a lot of washing machine repairs yourself quite easily, I repaired a belt in my current one following a youtube video!
If it's something expensive or not covered by warranty, cut your losses and buy a new one.

nordica · 18/12/2021 22:15

I did this time last year. I'd had it for four years and already had it repaired once and just wanted to sort it quickly.

Hohofortherobbers · 18/12/2021 22:20

Get it fixed, save the money and avoid the waste. Yes, it'll be a hassle for week or so but have you got a friend or neighbour locally who can do a load or 2 whilst you wait? Or a launderette? Aaah service wash heaven. All neatly folded for you, no effort Star

Clean the sump before you do anything. Its usually held on with a crocodile clip, it looks like an upside dowm black rubber plunger.
LoveFall · 18/12/2021 22:25

Well, we guiltily did the same with a dishwasher. It was only 2 years old, and just out of warranty. It had been fixed 5 or 6 times under warranty and when it went again, the repair would have cost us nearly as much for a new one.

We bought a new one. Now it is almost beyond its extended warranty and has been fixed at least four times.

I despair. They are designed and made by full on idiots.

I would get a new one OP and get the longest warranty you can.

FictionalCharacter · 18/12/2021 22:28

I wouldn’t bother with warranty repair, would just get a local repair bod in asap, and if too expensive to repair would replace it. In the meantime, launderette.

Twillow · 18/12/2021 22:33

The golden rule is if the repair costs half the original price or less, repair. If more, replace.
Mind you, repair estimates vary. I had an estimate for £95 on what turned out to be a very simple DIY job with the part costing £15.

FinallyHere · 18/12/2021 22:34

At least try and get the machine fixed and meanwhile, spend just a fraction of the money you save in sending your laundry out.

Back in 24hrs. Brilliant.

I may never use a washing machine again.

Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2021 22:35

@Thelnebriati

I’m really not confident doing that. Or, frankly, strong enough.

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 18/12/2021 22:37

In that case replace it, but make sure you clean the new one at least once a month.

coodawoodashooda · 18/12/2021 22:53

Definitely get a new one.

StoneofDestiny · 18/12/2021 22:56

Get it fixed under warranty. Surely a neighbour will run some washing through their machine for you? Or are their laundrettes near you?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2021 22:59

My new machine gives me a reminder on the screen to do this , I do the DW at the same time

Hot empty wash and a descaler tablet . Hard water area .

Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2021 23:28

Does Calgon really help?

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 18/12/2021 23:33

I can understand not wanting to be without a washing machine, but NO WAY would I roll over and just replace one after less than a year. We've had more than ten times that from the two washing machines we've had to replace.

Can you do your washing at the laundrette (send them the bill) or a friend/relatives?

The legal minimum warranty is two years, assuming you're in the UK or EU and there's also the 'reasonable person' test, which is more like 5/6 years.

Arrange for a repair or replacement via www.resolver.co.uk/ so they know you won't just roll over and buy another machine.

starfishofbethlehem · 18/12/2021 23:36

New one.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 18/12/2021 23:36

I gave up on a Hisense one which was just under 2 years old. It had never been great & needed 2 repairs at the end of the first year, a new motor & a pump, luckily still within warranty. The motor was arcing & I was worried it would catch fire. Even after the repairs it still constantly leaked.
I bought a cheaper end Miele (£520) as a replacement. Far better build quality & tells me when to do a drum clean approx once a month. It's been brilliant.

backtolifebacktoreality · 18/12/2021 23:38

I think Calgon tablets are a waste of money. My washing machine is used approx twice a day. Calgon are about 30p a wash so 60p a day. That's £219 a year on tablets. If limescale was to build up it would be cheaper to buy a new machine every couple of years!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2021 23:42

I don't use Calgon , mine are Ecozone ones .

I know a lot of people put vinegar in the drum as the cleaning agent . Depends on your water hardness
