to just get a new washing machine

Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2021 21:39

My washing machine is fucked. I’ve been aware it’s playing up for a few weeks making funny noises and a very loud spin.

I’ve checked the receipt - I bought it 22/12/2020 so it’s JUST within warranty but they’ll palm
Me off with a repair and fuck knows how long that’ll take.

I have SO MUCH laundry. It’s a joke but it is what it is.

I could just order a new one and it’ll be here Monday.

But it feels profligate.

DH doesn’t mind but slightly favours a new one as it’s quicker.

What would you do?

YABU - get the repair you lazy bint
YANBU - order the new shiny one

If it's still in warranty, then use the warranty. If it's just put of warranty, get on their arses. No washing machine should break after just a year.

I didn't pay much more for my Siemens washer, 4 years ago, and it's done about 25 loads a week, ever since.

PickAChew · 18/12/2021 23:46

And there is no guarantee that if you buy a replacement, it will last any longer. If you do, prioritise a longer guarantee period. John Lewis own brand usually have 3 years.

AuntyBumBum · 18/12/2021 23:46

I mean, it might be worth looking into getting a laundry service to come and collect, wash and return for a week or two while you're waiting for it to be fixed? If it saves you £400 on a new machine it would probably be worth it. But over Christmas that might be a pain.

PickAChew · 18/12/2021 23:49

@FinallyHere

At least try and get the machine fixed and meanwhile, spend just a fraction of the money you save in sending your laundry out.

Back in 24hrs. Brilliant.

I may never use a washing machine again.

That sounds like a service for men who never do their own laundry. Not families who have 3 loads a day.
Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2021 23:49

Ok. I’ll call AO tomorrow morning and see what they say. Bastard washing machines.

Hoping I don't jinx it but I have a 10 yrs old Bosch washer (cost £250 ish) and a Miele fridge that is coming up to 24 yrs old (cost £200 in 1998) I will always but these brands again- The same model of fridge is still sold and is £450 to buy new-but I would absolutely buy the same again.

lastchristmasigaveyoumyheart · 19/12/2021 00:08

Mine broke. So I bought a new one from John Lewis to be delivered the next day. And then I got the old one fixed and kept both. The old one gets used for dog stuff once a week, but at least I have it as a spare if the new one breaks.

Crunchymum · 19/12/2021 00:19

I'd love to have the space for a spare washing machine Grin

Nsky · 19/12/2021 00:26

You should try and get the one fixed, if in warranty, up until recently doing about 5 loads a week, now it’s 3, just me.
I hate my hiencse one , 2.5 yrs old, dishwasher Bosch 4 yrs old great, I won’t replace till needed tho .

BungleandGeorge · 19/12/2021 01:07

If it’s stopped spinning you should have an error code on the display? This will basically tell you what needs attention. I agree with the person who said it sounds like a blockage. I’ve sorted that out myself, the access was not difficult, it was on the front of the machine. I’ve managed to do a number of repairs myself just by using google and I’m not very mechanically minded. It’s really easy with the help of google and YouTube ! I’d be horrified to replace a year old washer…

StarlightLady · 19/12/2021 04:40

Within the warranty period, l would get it fixed. If l had to pay for the repair l’d go for a new one.

TwoShades1 · 19/12/2021 04:48

I would maybe get a new one so you can keep going for the moment. Then claim under warranty for the old one to be repaired. Once it’s sorted sell it. You obviously won’t cover the cost of the new washer but it’s better than nothing and hopefully minimal disruption in the meantime.

Blinkingheckythump · 19/12/2021 05:03

I know it's a nightmare to be without a washer but surely you see how wasteful it is to replace it.

BrendaDraper · 19/12/2021 05:29

I don't know if yours is Samsung, but I've just had mine fixed under warranty...the guy just about stripped it down and made me a new machine and he came in about 5 days.
Having said that, if mine wasn't inder warranty I'd have got a new one. Pain in the absolute arse aren't they.

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 19/12/2021 06:11

Have you checked the filter?
That sometimes stops the spin.

newname12345 · 19/12/2021 07:25

@Merryoldgoat

It’s a Beko and was £404.

I just can’t deal with shitty repair nonsense but it’s a lot of money if it can be fixed. I just can’t be without it for a week.

Can you really not go without it for a week? An hour or so in a launderette with your phone/book isn't necessarily a terrible thing.
queencrunch · 19/12/2021 07:37

It's the week before Christmas, you'll be lucky to get it fixed this week.

Get a replacement

LividLaVidaLoca · 19/12/2021 07:38

We have a local repairman. He’s been put to my machine two or three times in a year BUT it’s now thirteen years old and still in use several times a day, often just for the cost of a call out. He does some magic tinkering and makes it work again.

Fredstheteds · 19/12/2021 07:40

Miele dishwashers been a nightmare hello extended warranty luckily

PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 19/12/2021 07:43

Why don't you order a new one and get the old one fixed? You can then sell the old one (for maybe £50) which will take some sting out of the price of the new one.

NannaMcPhoo · 19/12/2021 07:48

And people wonder why we have so much landfill.

borntobequiet · 19/12/2021 07:48

@Merryoldgoat

Does Calgon really help?
In a really hard water area like mine, yes. But you can get generic versions from most supermarkets for half the price. I use Morrison’s gel liquid one poured into the dispenser drawer with the detergent.
Stuffin · 19/12/2021 07:52

I had a repair warranty. They came out after a couple of weeks. Said they needed to order parts and would be another couple of weeks if I was lucky.

I cancelled my warranty. Bought a new washing machine which was fitted the next day and will never bother with repairs again for a washer.

randomsabreuse · 19/12/2021 07:54

Both! Shiny new one now but get it repaired under warranty so you have a spare...

Stuffin · 19/12/2021 07:55

Oh and another time I got them out for an awful sound when spinning which was intermittent. I had videoed it so they could hear it. They agreed it sounded awful but said they would need to strip it down which they said wasn't worth it and to just keep using it. Again makes me doubt using any repair service.
