OK, I'm probably not, but the way mothers did things back then? Their attitude is really getting on my nerves...

So you didn't breastfeed. So you weaned early. So you made up bottles at room temperature. So you put your baby on its front to sleep. So you slung a carrycot across the back seat of the car and didn't strap it in. So you let your kids play outside till all hours and ignored their protestations of Old Mr Todger scaring them with his white-eared elephant impersonation.

Just because not everybody wants to follow in your footsteps, do try not to get thickly indignant about it all, there's loves.

Some people prefer to think about how they do things, research, help other women to achieve their own goals, and, do you know what, they don't need scorn and derision heaped upon them by morons.

The bad practice didn't do me any harm though

DingDongTheNitsHaveGone · 19/12/2007 10:37

anyway, slag me off now cos i'm off. I thought the AIBU thread was NOT meant to be too serious, am off now to find some less seriousness somewhere!

MrsBumblebee · 19/12/2007 10:38

Munker, do you ever read Zoe Williams's Anti-Natal column in the Guardian? Very funny. This one from a couple of weeks ago on a similar topic was particularly entertaining.

Oh, I will now, MrsB - I'm loving "I'm not saying it's a lie, I'm just saying it didn't happen."

I think I sit on the fence on the "never did me harm" thing. Not sure what to think of this. I guess since I am still here I guess ultimately it didn't - but there were repecussions.

I co-slept with my parents when I was a baby.
My dad was a smoker. According to surrent guidelines, you should not co-sleep if you smoke. Nor should you smoke at all around babies and children.
When I was 6 weeks old, I stopped breathing and turned blue. My dad (the smoker) resuscitated me. I was taken to hospital where I stayed for a week, and subjected to may tests. Couldn't find anything wrong with me, but I guess I had a lucky escape and was nearly a victim of SIDS.
The questions that do occur to me during the incident are
Would it have happened if my dad wasn't a smoker? Would it have happened if I was in my own cot? Or my own room? If it had happened when I was in the cot rather than in my parents room, would my parents have known I had stopped breathing in time to save my life - docs told my dad if he hadn't acted so quickly I would have been dead - my heart had actually stopped.
As a result of this episode, my parents were advised not to allow me to have the Whooping Cough vaccine. At the time, this vaccine was linked with brain damage in vulnerable infants, and because of my brush with death at 6 weeks, I was classed as vulnerable.
I caught whooping cough, and it took me a year to completely recover from it, and I tend to now develop bad persistant coughs whenever I get a cold or other respitory infection.
But ultimately I am in good health. But I was one of the lucky ones. Infant mortality rates in this country are declining as we gain further knowledge of child care techniques.
IN 30 years time - who knows what advice our children will be given about raising their offspring? And how they will look at the things we did?
We shouldn't judge our parents harshly because they raised us in the best way they new how. Just like how we are doing.
Ultimately we should all be supporting each other and try and wade our way through the morass of information to find the best method for our children - never forgetting that we are NOT perfect and we WILL get things wrong!!

Okay that was rather weighty and serious! Who's for a custard pie fight!

Doodle, did you write the other OP?

No.

Then I'm pretty sure my OP wasn't anything to do with you.

well said. There are a lot of people who will agree. But can't be bothered to say so because of the inevitable.....

ItNeverDidMeAnyHarm · 19/12/2007 16:51

I dunno what the problem is, quite frankly.

And a round of applause for Doodledootoo

ItNeverDidMeAnyHarm · 19/12/2007 17:09

I rather think that this is what most people have been saying on the other thread. But, after a while, I think Hunker just snapped.

To err is human.......and she's sooo funny with it, isnt she?

ChubbyStuckForAFestiveNameBurd · 19/12/2007 17:15

hunker

I think the OP was fair enough in the circumstances, and those who are narked about it will now understand why pukka's post pissed off some folk.

Plus, it made me snigger.

DingDongTheNitsHaveGone · 19/12/2007 17:19

another round of applause for Doodle... and NO it is not 'soooooo funny' to be ruder in VL than you (hopefully) would be in RL

crokky · 19/12/2007 17:22

If the day comes when I become a MIL, I will be very happy for my DIL to follow whatever the current government advice at that time is.

DingDongTheNitsHaveGone · 19/12/2007 17:23

me too crokky, and I think everyone agrees with that!

ItNeverDidMeAnyHarm · 19/12/2007 17:24

Ummm.

How do you know that Hunker isnt like that in RL? And how is she any different from pukkapatch in her OP as far as being rude is concerned?

DingDongTheNitsHaveGone · 19/12/2007 17:25

sorry - i'm not engaging with you on this one. pick a fight with someone else. I'm off!

bufobufo · 19/12/2007 17:52

I didnt think the OP was funny at all...just bitchy.

ChristmasPreparationAitch · 19/12/2007 17:54

bufo you do know it apes another post, don't you? it's more a response to that than anything else.

bufobufo · 19/12/2007 17:55

Yes I do. She's not nearly as funny as she thinks. In my humble opinion...
