Lifelong Sainsbury's customer here but over the past 4-5 years or so I've really noticed a dive in the quality and value of their food. These days even their premium Taste the Difference range barely carries any flavour but still seems to attach a whacking great price tag.

Randomly stopped off at my local Morrisons today to grab some snacks and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their own-brand products. Lots of choice and a longer shelf-life than I've seen in Sainsburys for quite some time. A few big brand treats such as alcohol advertised at 70% of the prices I've seen elsewhere.

Considering switching to do the full weekly shop here now and would love to hear from others with recommendations of any products worth a try (or if there is anything I should be steering clear of!!)

We eat mostly vegetarian on weekdays and keep meat/fish for the weekends.

@ShinyMe

I don't go to Morrisons often, but they do a GREAT marzipan cake thing, which is some kind of Swedish thing, a giant dome of whipped cream covered in green marzipan. I love it.
Festival Gateau they used to call it! I'd forgotten that. I love that.
RedHelenB · 15/12/2021 18:54

@Devonchills

The doughnuts.
This.

@NMC2022

Oh and the cream and lemon/jam filled muffins they're huge and delicious!
The chocolate and cherry ones are my favourite

Agree their counters are great, can get eg heart, oxtail etc at the butcher counter here, and some kind of joint/roast type meat is usually on offer. The fig yoghurt is wonderful and the Brittany butter. They also do big pots of fresh olives with eg lemon and garlic, lemon and chilli and so on, for not much money, which are really nice. And they have big tubs of thick natural yoghurt. Their takeaway range is v good too.

Their delivery service is horrendous though - very limited and stupid subs. And as a pp said their standard packaged chicken isn't good. Also, don't buy the wonky veg. It's not wonky, it's just grim eg woody carrots etc. That's true of all supermarkets though ime. And they charge you for paper carrier bags which is a massive piss-take.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 15/12/2021 19:01

The Buddha Salad in the meal deal is amazing. Really tasty and huge portion size, it's great.

Babymamamama · 15/12/2021 19:12

I love their nets of “wonky” avocados. They are a bit smaller and I ripen them at home next to the bananas. Great value and a perfect portion for one. Most of their fruit and veg is nice. DD likes their frozen calamari. Their bread rolls etc are also nice.

DysmalRadius · 15/12/2021 19:33

Frozen paratha
Frozen Greek Salad (I bought this because I couldn't believe it would be nice and I was WRONG!!! I don't know how they are freezing tomato and cucumber without it being minging, but they are doing it and I cannot get over it!!!
Sun dried tomato paste - no random herbs, just minced up sundried tomatoes

Bideshi · 15/12/2021 20:12

Spelt and rye loaf which doesn't taste like the bottom of the birdcage.

Those square scones with the sugary top.

The fish counter which has proper fishmongers who bone and fillet while you wait.

The fruit and veg which is great.

RightOnTheEdge · 15/12/2021 20:17

Their cheese puffs are the absolute best and also the honey roasted peanut butter, my kids love it.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/12/2021 20:19

Online service varies depending whether it’s warehouse or picked from the shop. Until the recent delivery troubles I rarely had a substitution and the ones I had were intelligent. Online misses out on the local specialities though.

Customer service is good,quibble free returns.

Cheeses are good - Cinco Lanzas, Manchego, Yarg, and there’s a good Camambert.

In the café, Apple Granny - apple pie with a toffee fudge topping. Healthy eating it isn’t ,

BarbaraofSeville · 15/12/2021 20:52

Those square scones with the sugary top

Literally the only ready made scones available in a supermarket that are edible, even Waitrose can't manage it. M&S bakery counter ones are nice, but nearly three times the price.

shouldistop · 15/12/2021 20:53

I'm sure I read this exact thread a while ago. Strongest deja vu. So weird

snackodactyl · 15/12/2021 20:59

love our local Morrisons, it’s the nearest supermarket and ticks so many boxes. seconding the pittas, the lobster mac and cheese, the mexican dip and their homewares too! so many bits and bobs of theirs around the house and when anyone asks where they are from the answer has always been ‘Morrisons!’

adding Brittany butter, the beetroot rolls, laundry powder and dishwasher tablets to my list.

what i really love though is how helpful, friendly and good natured the staff working there are. always extremely busy but never not polite to customers. they’re what make it great for me.

HeyGepetto · 15/12/2021 20:59

@buzzy1

They do the best pitta breads ..I go there especially to stock up on it.
Me too! They’re amazing!
ivykaty44 · 15/12/2021 21:01

apparently their lemon meringue pie... dd wants that one for xmas day pudding. not M&S or Aldi or Sainsbury and but Morrisons

southlondoner02 · 15/12/2021 21:15

Agree their bio washing powder/ liquid is good - not too strong smelling.
Our bakery is not good - often just loads of empty shelves, but I assume from this thread that's store dependant.
Our one also has a really good world food aisle where you can get cheap chickpeas, spices, Japanese noodles etc really cheaply.

Also find them to be the best for delivery of all the shops - on time (sometimes ask if it's convenient to come early) rarely any subs etc

MsJinks · 15/12/2021 22:09

Gluten free stuff - very reasonable prices and taste fine, which is unusual for bread particularly. Fish counter has some good offers and good fish. My parents like their best ready meals. Fruit and veg lasts well.
Generally there is a good range at decent prices and currently 10% off for blue light card holders, and I think continuing 10% for NHS staff.
I went to Sainsbury’s when struggling to get some of my mum’s shopping and they seemed to have less availability, shorter dates and mostly more expensive although I always liked Sainsbury’s and use it for some stuff.
However, I’ve found tills a real problem in the evening lately and am informed that they have been keeping costs down for their sell off. I’m hoping that the good counters, good stock and prices continues after this and also hoping they will employ more staff as well!

NMC2022 · 15/12/2021 23:21

@RedHelenB I did a click and collect once and they randomly packed me the jam ones AND the chocolate, I hadn't ordered any
"Keep them if you want" they said
Oh I want GrinGrin

DuesToTheDirt · 16/12/2021 10:54

Green cake, we calle it. Disappeared from our branch a couple of years ago. Sad

NMC2022 · 16/12/2021 11:25

I'm craving those square sugar topped scones now Grin

Classica · 16/12/2021 11:28

I love their meat selection, they always have great cuts like ox cheek, beef shin etc. Great fish counter too.

People rave about their bread but I find their baked stuff to be a bit shit to be honest! People must be used to really crap bread if that impresses them.

Elzbells · 16/12/2021 11:29

@Iwishiwereamillionaire

Lobster Mac and cheese! I can’t stop thinking about this… is it still in store? Just checked mine and couldn’t find it Confused
It's usually in my branch - always in the section with the fresh packaged fish and prawns. It's made in store and it's in a foil tin with a plastic top. They also do a mean fish pie in the same section.
Classica · 16/12/2021 11:30

Actually their sourdough loaf is quite nice. But all the other breads I've tried have been very blah.

Brainwave89 · 16/12/2021 11:31

Their fishcake range I find very good. Also for condiments. Try their cranberry and port sauce.

TheDogsMother · 16/12/2021 11:51

I've just been reading rave recommendations about their English Sparkling Wine (vintage and non vintage) down from £25 to £18. I believe one of the big name English Sparkling wine producers is behind it
