Mortified by gift from boss

didyouscoredarling · 13/12/2021 20:12

I had two KIT days that fell for secret Santa, so I was included in it

I got my boss, he got me. He forgot my present on the actual day of secret Santa so he gave me mine the day after

I got him an aftershave he likes. It's a fairly cheap one (£20), and a small box of chocolates. Just Cadbury's, he loves chocolate

I was gifted today a 'I ❤️ Sports direct' mug with a pack of pens in and some sticky notes
Wtf.

AIBU to feel sad? Limit was £20...

I only know he was my secret Santa because he was late to the fisting...

What a mean piece of shit he is.

Justilou1 · 14/12/2021 21:50

@Boo65 - I’d be thrilled with the lamb chops… yuuum! Also sooooo expensive here! (Am Aussie… just realised the racist element. Not thrilled for your bf at all! Not okay!)

Darlingx · 14/12/2021 21:51

Style it out with the matching T Shirt ?

@Loubilou09

Mortified? Really?....

Surely a tad pissed off but mortified, over a mug? Wow...the things people get worked up about is astonishing.

I expect that Op is mortified as it illustrates her boss’ opinion of her worth. Not because of a mug.
Dogscanteatonions · 14/12/2021 22:10

I'm trying to decide if it's a good or bad thing to be late to the fisting. Should one be fashionably late? Or if it a terrible faux Pas?

SpookyScarySkeletons · 14/12/2021 22:10

My DD(12) has the Lidl jumper! She is wearing it for Christmas jumper day tomorrow 😂

@EchosMum2007

Totally shitty thoughtless present, he must have picked it from his cupboard from some of his promo tat selection (you know, the advertising crap some companies/clients send to their business associates). Still, less embarrassing than what I got about 15 years ago (used to work for a major media company in London), where one of my (male) direct reports presented me with a chocolate willy and some chocolate massage "substance" a-la Anne Summers. He was definitely not implying anything, just an office idiot, but still it was extremely embarrassing, considering it happened in the presence of a couple of my big bosses and the full team of my direct reports, and all other SS presents were normal and decent! It was also rather thoughtless, given that at the time I was going through a separation from my husband.
That reminds me of the year I got a candy thing, definitely not my kind of thing and made me feel really embarrassed. This year I've organised it through coercion as I organised it last year having used Elfster and we were WFH (and of course we are again now), but I'm not taking part as I'm short on funds
purplebunny2012 · 14/12/2021 22:14

FFS, I changed thing to thong and it changed it back! Candy thong

BoredZelda · 14/12/2021 22:53

Best. Typo. Ever.

Just tried it an mine autocorrects away from the word and sends me fishing. Probably because I have never used the word, let alone enough for my autocorrect to start correcting to it.

Usernamerequired · 14/12/2021 22:53

😂 best thread ever!!! I hope Boris brought wine and cheese

snowmanshoes · 14/12/2021 22:57

Excellent! First time I’ve laughed in days! Really needed to read this thanks op

PurplePansy05 · 14/12/2021 23:11

I guess the final question is: is the mug getting refisted, OP? Next Christmas?

impossible · 14/12/2021 23:21

I think you're overreacting. There's no need to be mortified and it sounds as though he isn't bothered so let it go. If you get him next year return the compliment.

Allsortsofroses · 14/12/2021 23:47

I'm just wondering why your autocorrect has fisting in it HmmWink

Crying with laughter at thread esp this.
Harmonypuss · 15/12/2021 02:18

Personally, if I was part of a SS and someone gave me something shitty that was obviously a freebie, I'd point it out very loudly to everyone saying that it doesn't even qualify as a satisfactory gift as its clearly an unwanted freebie and a Stationery cupboard raid and then is put a great big note on it saying "shit, unsuitable present - unwanted by recipient" and leave it on his desk for everyone to see!
I'm not normally passive aggressive but shit treatment deserves it!

Sweetlikejollof · 15/12/2021 03:35

About 10 years ago, someone gave the Chief Exec of our company (a big shiny charity - household name)…a packet of JLS condoms for Secret Santa.

Said Chief Exec was a no nonsense Yorkshiremen in his 60’s and he was not amused. He spent much of the rest of the Christmas party ‘jokingly’ (not really) trying to suss out who had given them. Proper Columbo hijinks. Whoever it was, they were rightfully utterly terrified and we never found out.

I wonder if he ever used them. Wink

Bobbins36 · 15/12/2021 06:31

£20 is a lot for a secret Santa I think. But yep, rubbish effort from the boss.

Darlingx · 15/12/2021 07:11

It's down with the kids isn't that Lidl collection. It's the polystyrene trucker cap of my East london youth. A lidl Fair isle jumper SmileDress like a wee papa rapper.
Nothing says Douchebag Santa than a free promotional regifted item. You gift me twice it's going to be some special spice in the fisting section of the party games this Christmas Wink
The thing is in the Corporate world with all those branded goods his baubles need some branding honey with a cattle iron for that gift x

Dibbydoos · 15/12/2021 07:11

What a cheap skate! I hope that doesn't show what he's like as a boss, but I fear it might!

I would offer him the sports direct mug, saying so e that got me this as a secret santander gift and frankly I don't want it do you? The rest of the stuff find a kid who can use it if you can't.

We don't do secret santa anymore cos you typically get crap from someone who doesn't know you very well :(

Dorisspider · 15/12/2021 08:08

Fisting. Where do you work again?

pollymere · 15/12/2021 09:29

I think someone needs to have a quiet word with him so he buy you something decent. I don't ever find job seniority or intelligence an excuse for crappy secret Santa. Although my equally clever DH used to belong to a group that deliberately gave the worst gifts possible for the budget so maybe he just misunderstood? I think he'd be mortified to know he should've bought you something decent.

MammaSchwifty · 15/12/2021 11:10

He's a cheap aftershave wearing tight bastard. He's the one who should be mortified, but they never are though, are they?

amazing typo, by the way

Queenbee77 · 15/12/2021 11:14

@gamerchick@

Thats a brill idea. Yes give hom.stickynotes everyday.
Also make sure you tell everyone about your special mug!

StrangerThanSpring · 15/12/2021 12:38

The condoms gift is pretty funny, even though I bet it wasn't at the time.

I wouldn't say anything. I think that's part of the "joy" in Secret Santa is that you don't know if you will get something good or not.

For all the OP knows he may have hated his gift too. Maybe he always gets aftershave and thinks the Cadbury's chocolate was cheap. You just don't know.
