Falling down stairs when pregnant

misshoney37 · 12/12/2021 17:10

Posting here for traffic.

I've just slipped on my arse down the last few carpeted stairs in our house at 20 weeks pregnant. My bum and arm took the brunt of it. I didn't roll or land on my stomach in any way but I did go with a bit of a bang. I can't get to the hospital tonight but am due a scan next week anyway.

Can anyone reassure me? Did you have any slips trips or falls during pregnancy? Do I need to watch out for anything. I'm just sitting with a very sweet tea at the moment and cursing dp for leaving stuff on the stairs!

I did the same thing at about 32 weeks - I had slippery socks because i'd been making pancakes! The baby got hiccups straight away which reassured me, but i also had no bruises whatsoever anywhere near my stomach, I think your body does everything it can to protect the baby.

Obviously if you start bleeding or there are reduced movements you should get checked out asap, but my baby was fine. In fact she's fifteen and writing Christmas cards beside me.

RedHelenB · 12/12/2021 17:14

Baby is well protected inside you. Are you feeling kicking yet?

ChangeChingyChange · 12/12/2021 17:15

You'll be fine but absolutely go mad at DP
no more stuff to be left on or near the stairs!!

girlmom21 · 12/12/2021 17:17

I slipped down the stairs a couple of times in my last pregnancy (yes I'm a twat). One was around the same time as you and one was much later. Baby is here and happy and healthy Smile

JudgeJ · 12/12/2021 17:17

Did you have any slips trips or falls during pregnancy?

I was racing dinghies until six months, plenty of bumps and bashes, managed not to capsize, luckily! I'm sure you'll both be fine.

DreamerSeven · 12/12/2021 17:17

I did exactly the same thing when pregnant and all was fine but you should at least call your midwife for reassurance in case they want you to get checked out.

misshoney37 · 12/12/2021 17:18

Yes I'm feeling the odd movement here and there but nothing regular yet. Ironically I started a thread earlier about how much more worried I am in this pregnancy and constantly obsessing over movements already....and then I go and do this!!!!

Everything I'm reading seems to say that baby is well cushioned and protected and for any harm to be done I'd probably have had to significantly hurt myself too. I probably would have done more harm slipping on ice which I narrowly avoided doing last week.

I have absolutely bollocked dp about stuff being left on the stairs.

I fell over on the ice when I was around 32 weeks - also landed on my bum- I called triage at maternity assessment- they ask you some questions etc - they asked me about whether I was rhesus negative because sometimes that's an issue - maybe worth a quick call - sure baby will be absolutely fine though - poor you rest up !

MomOfBoyz2 · 12/12/2021 17:20

Yes I did with both of mine
First one around 20 weeks and second was was later around 35 weeks
Hurt my arse but babies all ok!!

billy1966 · 12/12/2021 17:23

I did it in my socks on my first and not for the first time.

It scared the stuffing out of me.

The thought that I would do it with the baby.

I bought proper slippers and made a conscious decision to be very careful going down the stairs.

It is very common in your socks.

I'm sure everything is fine.Flowers

SaulGoodmanIsTaken · 12/12/2021 17:23

Same at about 20 weeks as well, fell down the last few concrete steps. Bruised bum took the impact, slight sprained wrist and shocked. The baby is now 7 years old.

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 12/12/2021 17:25

I fell flat on my bump at about 30 weeks (tripped on a broken paving stone) and we were both fine, although I was very shocked and upset. I called the hospital and they were very reassuring as I was feeling plenty of movement from DD. If it was your bottom that took the brunt, and you’re not feeling anything weird (contractions or pelvic pain), you and baby will be fine. Very scary though - hold the bannister from now on just in case!!

ivykaty44 · 12/12/2021 17:26

I went from top to bottom when I was about 35 weeks pregnant. I had lost my balance at the top and landed at the bottom

dd was obviously distressed and I phoned the gp out of hours and he said oh you'll be fine

he phoned back 10 minutes later and asked me to go to maternity - which I did they monitored me and made sure everything was ok, which it was

Just came here to say the same! If you are rhesus negative blood type, you should check in with triage / the maternity unit, as if there is any risk of a knock, then they may want to give you an injection to prevent any issues later on.

I fell on some concrete steps this week (32 weeks) on way to midwife appointment. My knees and hands took the brunt of it, but I did hit my bump too. The midwife insisted I went to triage because I'd hit my bump and baby wasn't moving- he was just asleep and started kicking about an hour later. I think they were only really worried because the bump had taken a direct hit, and I hadn't felt any movement - these were the questions I kept getting asked. Was so cross at myself for falling.

Anyway the risk factors they told me to watch out for were any any bleeding, any cramps, any fluids leaking, any reduced movements, and any contraction type feelings. If I had any of these they said to call triage immediately

ItsAllAboutTheLighting · 12/12/2021 17:28

Oh God yeah I've fallen when pregnant.

I even dropped 3 year old ds directly onto my bump with a hard slam.

Bump is now 10 he's fine.

I've also slipped in the Bath when heavily pregnant more than once.

girlmom21 · 12/12/2021 17:29

If it helps OP, I've just remembered this (I don't know how but it was bloody traumatic) but I had a car accident on my way to a midwife appointment with DD1. Another car hit me driver side.
I didn't feel any movements all the way to my appointment and burst into tears as soon as the midwife asked if I was ok.

She checked the baby's heartbeat and everything was absolutely fine. As soon as she started searching for it baby started kicking.

If you're worried, do get checked out for peace of mind.

Earlybed · 12/12/2021 17:41

Fell down the stairs in both pregnancies, same way as you at around 20 weeks - huge bruises on bum, back and arm and both babies fine.

Your centre of gravity will be shifting. I also slipped on the ice outside my work later in my 2nd pregnancy (it should have gritted but wasn't) and landed on my behind. HR came to see me in a panic, I was unimpressed by the lack of gritting but pretty relaxed about falling by then.

Trinacham · 12/12/2021 18:02

I wasn't as far along as you but yes, I had bleeding at 10 weeks in the midwife of the night.. because of that, I fainted and fell down the stairs (not the whole flight, like half a flight, as we have a quarter staircase) baby was fine. They were all more concerned about the bleeding, which turned out to be nothing. Now 33 weeks

Trinacham · 12/12/2021 18:03

Night not midwife* Grin

Trinacham · 12/12/2021 18:03

Or middle rather Smile oh pregnancy brain..

TheWitchersWife · 12/12/2021 18:08

We moved house when I was 24 weeks pregnant. I was standing on the cheap Council toilet seat painting the bathroom and the toilet seat just exploded, I fell and twisted my ankle and banged up my arm pretty bad. The smashed up toilet seat also cut my leg as I fell and it scrapped along the broken plastic. I didnt go to the hospital and baby was fine at the next planned scan. Hes now 2 and a half and perfectly healthy. I was moving boxes and furniture from a second story flat down a slope into my car and then into my new house from 23 to around 30 weeks pregnant. Needs must and all that.

SlashBeef · 12/12/2021 18:22

Yup another one here that fell down the stairs about 28 weeks I think. That baby is now 20 months old and fine Smile

StoneofDestiny · 12/12/2021 18:24

Fell twice flat on my bump in late stage of pregnancy - the baby is well protected, but get checked out if worried.

beebopado · 12/12/2021 18:29

Midwife here, if you are RH neg then you definitely need to speak to midwife/triage, whatever is your contact
