Falling down stairs when pregnant

Posting here for traffic.

I've just slipped on my arse down the last few carpeted stairs in our house at 20 weeks pregnant. My bum and arm took the brunt of it. I didn't roll or land on my stomach in any way but I did go with a bit of a bang. I can't get to the hospital tonight but am due a scan next week anyway.

Can anyone reassure me? Did you have any slips trips or falls during pregnancy? Do I need to watch out for anything. I'm just sitting with a very sweet tea at the moment and cursing dp for leaving stuff on the stairs!

DW did this at 26 weeks with DD. No ill effects and DD has now made us grandparents.

misshoney37 · 12/12/2021 18:34

I'm not RH neg.

Thanks so much, this has really reassured me, I was just shook up more than anything. Think I've felt a few little wiggles since. My arse is bruised though.

I fell at 28 weeks. Started getting pains that evening and went into threatened pre-term labour and required steroids to strengthen babies lungs. Also got blue lighted to a different hospital because the one I was in had no room in the NICU. After 3 days, and plenty of drugs, dd decided she would rather stay in. She was born 10 weeks later perfectly healthy.

I’m sure your baby will perfectly fine, but if you have any worries, please go to the hospital to be checked.

Fab , no worries then

I slipped on ice down concrete steps at about 30 weeks, same as most PP bruised arse and arm. Phoned midwife she said baby well protected so don't worry. Any change in movements etc then I was to go in but all was fine 😊

GreetingsAndSalutations · 12/12/2021 18:45

Yep! Was looking for my phone and suddenly had a eureka moment remembering where I’d left it so started running down the stairs slid from more or less top to the bottom. My top rode up as I slid so the carpets burns and bruising from my arse to bottom of my shoulder blade were glorious technicolour. And bloody hurt a lot. I was checked out as I was terrified, the baby stopped moving and I am rhesus positive. All was fine btw. Baby started bouncing about again as soon the heart monitor was put on. Never run down any stairs since.

steff13 · 12/12/2021 18:45

I had slippery socks because i'd been making pancakes!

I think I need more information.

I had a really significant fall down some steps when I was pregnant with my DD, I landed on my head and had to be collared and blue lighted to hospital. I was incredibly lucky to get away with a massive scalp laceration and severe concussion, a few minor broken bones, and lots of bruising. One of the first things they did in resus was reassure me about how well protected baby is in there. They scanned her then and there and she was absolutely fine.

I'd keep a close eye on your movements and watch out for any bleeding or unusual discharge, but if you're at all concerned I'm sure the midwives would rather you went in to be checked than sat at home worrying.

LetsHearIt · 12/12/2021 18:53

I don't know if this applies to you or not but because my blood is O Negative, I was told if I have any kind of bump at all, falling over, dog jumping up at me etc then I'd need to get checked out of given the anti D injection to prevent mine and babies blood mixing. Apparently this is common with O Neg blood.
Are you in any pain?

LetsHearIt · 12/12/2021 18:56

Sorry just read after I posted that you're not RH Neg

misshoney37 · 12/12/2021 18:57

I'm A+ blood group.

I'm not in pain other than a bruised bottom and sore arm. I did kind of feel like I might wee myself after it happened but that passed.

It's hard to rely on movements because it's still so early and movements are sporadic and irregular right now. But I've not had any bleeding or cramping or anything.

I fell and broke my leg in three places and disclosed the ankle bones when I was 32 weeks pregnant. I had two surgeries on the leg. Baby was absolutely unaffected.

SparklyLeprechaun · 12/12/2021 19:00

I fell on the stairs at around 25 weeks. I had to go to A&E as I landed on my back and I was in a lot of pain. Baby was fine. A week later I fell again in exactly the same position. I was very clumsy when pregnant.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 12/12/2021 19:00

In terms of blunt force trauma to your abdomen - it’s extremely difficult to hurt the baby. The uterus is a thick wall of muscle and then you have the cushioning of the amniotic sac.
What you do have to be careful of is potentially detaching the placenta from the wall of the uterus. It’s possible with blunt force trauma but more likely in incidents where you change direction violently and suddenly eg car crash.

I missed a step and fell right onto my stomach in a shopping centre when I was 9 months pregnant. Nobody stopped to help they were too busy laughing. I had to get a taxi home as I'd hurt my leg but baby was absolutely fine. I felt so guilty that I'd minded myself so well then that happened 🙈

headintheproverbial · 12/12/2021 19:42

I did exactly as you've described twice at 33 and 34 weeks. I blamed it on not being able to see my feet!

All was absolutely fine but it's an awful fright you get, isn't it?

AwkwardPaws27 · 12/12/2021 19:46

My mum fell through the floor while pregnant with me; my dad was doing work to the house and had taken the floorboards up. For some reason he decided to stick a rug over the area rather than put the boards back down.
She was black & blue with bruises, & the midwife asked if she was being abused.
I'm fine, by the way Grin

AliveAndSleeping · 12/12/2021 20:11

I think at twenty weeks and if you didn't directly fall on the bump you should be fine.

I tripped on a kerb and fell right on my bump at 39 weeks. I went to the hospital to get checked. Baby was moving ok so they sent me home again. I felt terrible and was shit scared. The only consolation were my super painful bruises on my knees which probably meant my knees hit the ground first and then the bump did. I went into labour two days later (super uncomfortable with bruised knees) and 5 months later he seems fine.

Roseandgeranium · 12/12/2021 20:14

Did exactly the same at 8 months! Wrenched my shoulder a bit but baby was completely fine. Stayed pregnant for another 5 weeks!

Offmyfence · 12/12/2021 20:14

Yes I fell over in a very busy high street. Everyone around me was mortified and a chair and first aider were summonsed from a shop. We were both fine.

Baby is well protected.

Bastards laughing, I had the opposite reaction with people calling for chairs and first aiders!
Archip17 · 12/12/2021 20:19

I fell down the stairs at 17 weeks and then had a car accident at 29 weeks with the same pregnancy. Both horrible shocks and worrying, but I got checked and he was fine. Definitely tell your midwife and get checked.

bjjgirl · 12/12/2021 20:23

I did a tactical firearms course while pregnant (obviously I had no idea) but I was fighting, role paying etc I was absolutely fine.

Your baby is well protected inside you

Suzanne999 · 12/12/2021 20:27

Yep. Missed the top stair, went from top to bottom feet first on my back/bum, at about 20 weeks. Baby went quiet for a few hours then gradually kicked, moved more and all was ok.
If you’re still worried in the morning can you call a midwife for advice and reassurance?

RaPumPumPumPum · 12/12/2021 20:29

I did the exact same thing at 38 weeks pregnant. DD, now 9, is and always has been a healthy child. They’re well protected in there!
