I mostly give stuff away as can’t be dealing with hassle.

I go to the tip, easiest and fastest way to stay uncluttered!

AbsolCatly · 12/12/2021 08:27

A mix, high value items I tend to sell eg buggy etc

Some furniture I have sold for £1 - £5, well under value but it got it gone more quickly than if I had listed for its actual value or free, people love a bargain

Giving away might not get me cash richer but the feeling of space is priceless!

Clothes in good condition generally get passed on but as the DCs tend to wear out rather than grow out most get bagged, labelled as rags and go to the charity shops as they can get money for them and labelled means they don't need to

Ragwort · 12/12/2021 08:30

Give things away ... I am lucky in that I don't need the money, I manage a charity shop so it is very easy for me to take things to my own shop. Anything not suitable for the shop would go to the tip.

I personally couldn't be bothered with the hassle of trying to sell things, don't even understand how FB market place etc works.

chocolatemademefat · 12/12/2021 08:34

I give away. I’ve tried selling and just can’t be arsed with the ridiculous haggling people will do. I’ve been made to feel that they’re doing me a favour buying stuff. One woman bought a unit from me for much less than I originally asked for then put it on Facebook marketplace for way more than I’d asked for. I suppose to some people it’s a business.

Practicebeingpatient · 12/12/2021 08:35

I am in the middle of a massive declutter. It started with clearing out my mums house. It was a huge job because she is a proper hoarder It horrified me how much stuff she had accumulated and I realised I could go the same way if I wasn't careful so I have now started on my own home. I sold a few things on eBay but realised it's a massive amount of work and hassle for the couple of ££ profit I see so 99% of the stuff was eventually given to charity.

The exception to this is my Dyson Airwrap. I got a lot more than I expected for a second hand hairdryer.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/12/2021 08:35

I know charities are an amazing things for people who don't have the mean to purchase things new but so is selling on as you are still providing those items at a low price it's a perfectly valid point @EB9318. There isn't wrong with a mutual benefit. I'm more inclined to sell gifts although it just goes back into the pot for the next lot of stuff (people gift less as they get older) whereas anything passed down to us I pass on or charity shop as it isn't "ours" to profit from

Chely · 12/12/2021 08:35

I sold stuff when we were very tight financially. Now we're more comfortable on that front I give stuff to charity if it is not handed down within the family.

Practicebeingpatient · 12/12/2021 08:38

@Sorryusernamealreadyexists

I enjoy buying on fb marketplace but I hate selling, honestly it’s a waste of your life with the time wasters on there! Give lots away for this reason, my time is worth more than the money I’d make.
So true.
DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 12/12/2021 08:54

Throw it outside the house. A lot of stuff I could have sold for decent money but I'm not allowed anyone coming to my house so I threw it all outside

What????? You just open your front door and throw stuff outside that you no longer want?

Why isn't anybody allowed to your house?

Thisbastardcomputer · 12/12/2021 09:01

I give stuff away always but have noticed some of the recipients never give me anything, like my sister. She's had very expensive stuff from me but never once offered me anything, so I've stopped.

My niece who is a similar age to me, I give her stuff, she does give me things, does things for me and her husband who is very handy will pop round. But there's a bit of grabbyness and expectation.

I've sent shed loads of really nice things to the hospice shop, mother spent 48 hours in there before she died and they were wonderful and in future I will continue to support them, I moved areas but drop items off when visiting family.

LadyWhistledownsPen · 12/12/2021 10:09

If I bought it new and it was expensive I'll try to sell. Anything else I give away because I usually got it second hand in the first place.

whereislittleroo · 12/12/2021 10:14

Depends on what I'm selling. If it cost a lot and is in great condition, I will try to sell. Smaller/cheaper items I give away. I will happily give things to friends as long as they need/want them.

Monolithique · 12/12/2021 10:21

If it's worth something and easy to post i will sell it . I give away heavier items to charity shops because I don't want people coming to my house to collect things.

nokidshere · 12/12/2021 10:38

Depends if I need money or not.

BoudecaBains · 12/12/2021 10:52

@FinallySomeNormality

I give away as I find selling a PITA!
And fart-arsing around with charity shops is a rectal blockage too so if it's worth something I'll sell it but otherwise it's going to the tip.
Bubblecap · 12/12/2021 11:04

I have given away almost everything. Apart from in an old job where there was a lot of black tie involved and I needed a lot of evening frocks. I would buy, wear once or twice and then get a dress agency to sell on my behalf. That’s almost 20 years ago though so no idea if they exists anymore, they took a small commission.

I really like the lockdown habit of putting stuff outside. I gave away two bookcases last year and the pallets from building materials. The charity shops were shut so did miss out on the furniture but the pallets would have needed a 15 mile round drive to the tip.

ByTheSea · 12/12/2021 11:11

Always give, can't be asked to sell

AdobeWanKenobi · 12/12/2021 11:46

Under £20 I'd usually just give it away, though I do find that free stuff can attract a certain type of time wasting wanker.

Things like electronics (old phones, watches) I try and sell via friends and family a lot cheaper as again they also attract no end of time wasting idiots on the open market so I'd rather offer to them at the price the online phone shops are offering me.

DD recently asked me to sell her Dyson Air Wrap because she'd used it a couple of times and didn't like it. I sold it to a colleague of DH's for less than marketplace etc were asking, but there were so many scams and time wasters it was just easier.

I think sometimes people forget to factor their time into things as well. Yes, ebay is easy ish, but by the time you've written your description, packed everything and walked a mile to the post office it's not really worth it for smaller items.

Butchyrestingface · 12/12/2021 11:58

I give stuff away. I am completely gormless when it comes to packaging and sellotaping stuff and would make a royal mess of things. Also, the grief that sellers seem to get through selling on Facebook Marketplace and eBay doesn't seem worth the effort to me. It's aggravating enough trying to GIVE things away on these sites.

I would like to sell, especially at the rate I buy crap things.

To ask if you give thing away or prefer to sell
MrsBobDylan · 12/12/2021 12:56

I think people should give things away if they don't need the money.

I sell stuff when we're brassic and give away when we're flush.

I also give away when the amount I'd get for it does not equal the joy it could give to someone else.

I have just gifted two bikes to a very hard up family across the road - single Mum with 7 kids.

The eldest is yr 7 and has been kicked out of school. He has a difficult life ahead and I'd like him to know that someone cares.

ItsSunnyOutside · 12/12/2021 13:35

Abit of both but mostly sell , I know what I can get good money for.

Give lots of dcs old baby clothes to charity shops though.

We once listed a pram and a large vanity mirror with lights on gumtree for free and couldn't give it away! Literally! Lots of people interested, a few messaged to say they would pick it up, then they just wouldn't bother turning up ( or text to say they didn't want it anymore) so we stopped doing that and just ask local charity shops if they want the bigger stuff.

Triyo · 12/12/2021 13:39

I mostly sell because money is tight. But its a total faff!

5foot5 · 12/12/2021 13:44

Mostly give but with more time on my hands (recently retired) decided to try to sell a bit. Specifically books. We have hundreds and hundreds. DH and I decided we needed a significant cull. I downloaded a couple of the apps that buy books. DH quickly lost patience because you have to scan each book or type in the Isbn and the majority of books they don't want.

Anyway I did end up getting just over £100 for the accepted books. The rest, about 20 carrier bags full, were distributed between local charity shops.

On truth it was very time consuming, all the scanning and then packaging for dispatch. If I had still been working I don't think I could have found the time

JKDinomum · 12/12/2021 13:49

Giving stuff away isn't always less hassle than selling it. Putting stuff for free on Olio, Freecycle or Facebook is the same amount of hassle as selling on FB marketplace or eBay. So I'd rather get a few quid to spend on the kids.

I hate throwing anything away so we try to sell stuff where possible.
