I mostly give stuff away as can’t be dealing with hassle.

OP posts:
windmill26 · 11/12/2021 23:17

I sell it and put the money in our Isas.

OhGiveUp · 11/12/2021 23:23

I take it to the local dump it site.
A couple of weeks ago, I had a brand new, still wrapped car seat for a child aged two and over.
I tried to give it away, no one wanted it so that went to the dump it site too.
I can't be doing with the hassle of other people.

MadMadMadamMim · 11/12/2021 23:23

I give. I take stuff to my local charity shop and hope they can make use of it. Partly because I don't have time/am too idle to FB or Ebay stuff and partly because I like buying stuff in charity shops and prefer second hand to new.

GrazingSheep · 11/12/2021 23:28

Give it all away.
Brought 2 new Le Creseut casserole saucepans- belonging to my mother -to our local charity shop today. She would rather they benefit. I think I have absorbed her mindset

Porfre · 11/12/2021 23:30

Give away.
Nearly everything.
I dont have the time to sell. Also although I'd make some money i really cant be bothered

FriedTomatoe · 11/12/2021 23:37

I don't get it. It upsets me a bit that everyone wants something for nothing nowadays. A lot of stuff people give away has value. If I can't sell then it's charity shop. I used to ask that people made a charitable donation if I was giving away something good for free. I'm sure it didn't motivate anyone.

Disneydatknee88 · 11/12/2021 23:40

I give stuff away. I can't be arsed with selling stuff. I will list it for free for a week and if it doesn't go, it's down the tip.

Do you mean to landfill? Why wouldn't you take it to a charity shop if it was still in its wrapping?
FedUpFelicia · 11/12/2021 23:49

Almost always give away.

I used to sell things on eBay when I was tight on cash and saving for a deposit (& lunch was a tin of soup every day for example). This was back when eBay allowed sellers to feed back on buyers too. Now it's a shit show and I hate people finding out where I live via Facebook market place sales, so I would rather donate to a charity, but I do check whether friends want anything I'm getting rid of first.

Duchess379 · 12/12/2021 00:19

Depends. Some stuff I give to charity, other bits I sell. Although I'm currently clearing out cupboards due to moving & I've put some clothes up for sale, it's just so long winded & faffy. I wish I hadn't bothered tbh.. 🤦🏼‍♀️

RobertSmithsLipstick · 12/12/2021 00:22

I could really do with the money, but it's become such a pain to try and sell.

I've had a really decent actress topper clogging up my bedroom since the summer, but the only people who "buy" it then tell me they live 300 miles away and want me to post it.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 12/12/2021 00:23
Grin Actress topper!
SweetsAndChocolates · 12/12/2021 00:26

Give it away, mainly because selling is not what it used to be. Listing something for nearly nothing gets a few notices, the only messages you get are from people either asking for delivery for free or offering pretty much peanuts.
I also give away as I find excessive items overwhelming, and have to clear out, the fastest was is to give to charity shops.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/12/2021 00:38

Sell in Vinted, takes the hassle out of it. We donate too to local charity shops. Got DS to empty some of the stuff in his room and sold it for him so he could buy fewer toys with it 😂

St0rmTr00per · 12/12/2021 00:42

@DDUW

Throw it outside the house. A lot of stuff I could have sold for decent money but I'm not allowed anyone coming to my house so I threw it all outside.
Why aren't you allowed people come to the house?
JesusSufferingFuck22 · 12/12/2021 00:45

Both. If it's of personal/sentimental/reasonable monetary value to me I usually sell for a few quid. Otherwise is gets given away via local sales and wants pages or given to charity shops.

Bortles · 12/12/2021 01:08

Give away. Have never been rich but always imagine my grandmother being horrified at the idea of selling things. Couldn't do it. Funnily enough I buy second-hand things happily!

RobertSmithsLipstick · 12/12/2021 01:13

My local olio has people complaining about ones who mess them about, don't turn up, or get arsey when stuff has already been distributed out.

It's a shame.

Jux · 12/12/2021 01:41

Mostly give. DH generally sells; if he gets a bit pissy about my giving people stuff then he takes over the selling of it for me. It generally happens with big things of more value like my parents' bed (went to America for a few hundred quid). I know that in our circumstances it's more sensible to sell things but I just can't be bothered and if someone happens by who'd like whatever it is then they can have it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/12/2021 01:48

Give it away

I like to think it’s the most hassle free way of doing something good!

OhGiveUp · 12/12/2021 07:41

@SleepingStandingUp Nearest one is in town at almost a fiver for parking. No thanks.

Me too
Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 12/12/2021 07:59

I enjoy buying on fb marketplace but I hate selling, honestly it’s a waste of your life with the time wasters on there! Give lots away for this reason, my time is worth more than the money I’d make.

The charity shops won’t take a lot of non clothing stuff though (clothing yes I give to charity shops).

I’m giving away furniture this weekend that has a few big scratches (someone will hopefully upcycle it) and dining chairs that are very faded. In the past I’ve had the charity shop turn up in their van and refuse sofas that have mended holes in the fabric on the back. They also can’t take toys without the right safety mark, or an unopened box of blinds, or slightly used car seats etc.

EB9318 · 12/12/2021 08:18

People say it's nice to be able to give away for free because you don't need the money, and luckily I am in that same position, however, I choose to sell my baby clothes and toys that are now too small and we have over £1000 in a child savings account.

I personally felt like most of these items were gifts from other people and when my little one is older, it's like another gift in the form of a child bond maturing etc.

I know charities are an amazing things for people who don't have the mean to purchase things new but so is selling on as you are still providing those items at a low price.
