Loads of Veggies and Massive Salad

365 replies

HangingDitch · 08/12/2021 22:29

I find people saying they had “loads of veggies” or “massive salad” with their meal irrationally irritating. Not the fact they had vegetables or a salad, just the phrases.

I am being unreasonable, aren’t I?

@Ineedaduvetday

Vegan food is always described on MN as 'delicious'. Can't have a vegan food thread without that word being used in many of the posts.
I don't mind vegan food, but I bought some vegan sausages the other day and they tasted like something that had come from a 3d printer. My body was screaming at me 'this is not food!'. They were odd. Love vegan cheese though!
ErrolTheDragon · 10/12/2021 16:53

The only vegan 'fake meat' I've ever had which was really nice was a 'hoisin duck' starter, which came with a small but piquantly dressed salad. I think it was made from seitan.

What a brilliant thread - and yes, very cathartic.

For some reason I can't analyse, I don't like menus which say "blah blah served with "a" (something - say, seafood) sauce. Just put 'seafood sauce' without the "a". Don't know why it annoys me - perhaps because it's SO pretentious - implying that the chef has a number of seafood sauces at his fingertips and has chosen this one on a whim today. Particularly annoying if it's clearly a chain pub/restaurant where stuff might well just be microwaved.

Also (and I'm not going to win this one) I don't like going for 'a coffee' - why not just 'coffee' or 'a cup of coffee'? No-one needs to tell me this is irrational - I know! I just can't work out why it annoys me.

This brought back memories of my mum sending me to the shop with a list and
T- Toms still irritate me. Although not half as much as T pax! Grin

People who talk about making a 'pan' of soup. In my fantasies, I kill them a million times over and it is never enough. 🔪🔪🔪

hotmeatymilk · 10/12/2021 17:27

@CulturePigeon Holy shit I thought I was alone in “a coffee”. Can’t bear it, judge people for the “a”, actively find myself then not wanting coffee if it’s offered as “a” coffee. It’s like cotton wool on teeth.

SmoggieC · 10/12/2021 17:33

I used to work with a grown woman in her 50s that said veggywabbles. Now that was irritating.

angela99999 · 10/12/2021 17:37

@Mrsjayy

My massive salads usually have cheese and pork pie in them so not exactly healthy Wink
So true. And maybe new potatoes or a jacket potato? DH regards salad as a garnish, not a meal. He leaves it on his plate as he would a sprig of mint or a coriander pod.
angela99999 · 10/12/2021 17:42

@Thecurliestwurly

OP, I have loads of veggies with my meal, mainly spuds in the form of chips....

I do actually like lots of veg and salad, hate meals without them, but you definitely need carbs and protein. Therefore my meals are massive and are contributing to my massive arse!

I once met an enormous vegan biker, the most unhealthy-looking man you could imagine. Apparently he lived on chips and baked beans and loathed "any other vegetables".

I hadn't spotted CulturePigeon"'s "a coffee" post.
Oddly, I don't mind "a coffee" but don't like "a tea".
I also don't mind "a beer" or "a whisky", for example, but really dislike "a wine" or "a few wines".
"A cheeky wine" would be rubbing salt into the wound.

Yanbu.

"Massive salad" like it's a hearty, indulgent, filling meal. It just never is.

I make 'massive' salads but it's mostly cold non salad things with a bit of added lettuce and cucumber. Probably more calories than your average roast 😆

All chocolate is good

Hershey’s tastes like vomit

Twopenny · 10/12/2021 18:16

Some of the phrases coming up are overly twee or cliche-reastaurant-wankiness and I get it, but there's loads of just...normal ways to describe food, cooking and eating coming up? I find it weird that people have such strong reactions to others talking positively about food, and showing excitement and enjoyment about eating it.

lightisnotwhite · 10/12/2021 18:20

Yes, I am not alone. I drink coffee like water. Multiple cups a day, cheap instant, no milk or sugar. It’s just a drink. “A” coffee is posher than plural coffees though.

Overthinkingx3 · 10/12/2021 18:21

I think it is the virtue signalling that offends you ! It is like they are saying they are so superior by having a puritanical vegan organic meal

HestersSamplerofCarrots · 10/12/2021 18:21

@Bloodypunkrockers

Huge salads Massive pots of chilli

Never normal sized. Very irritating

I would add
Hot choc
Toms
Tinned toms
Pots
Jkt pots
Spag bol
Mac n cheese
And the use of "good" and "proper" when talking about bread, butter, etc

When you add in all the Yums
and yummies it's little wonder I avoid food threads usually.

This.

And I’ll add

Chocs/box of chocs
Chippies
Tommy sauce or Tommy k

Hershey's really is stretching the definition of 'chocolate' too far.

Any adult who refers to vegetables as veggies deserves to be pelted with frozen sprouts until they see the error of their ways. YANBU op.

"Massive salad" like it's a hearty, indulgent, filling meal. It just never is.

It can be if it is stuff like potato salad, coleslaw, mixed bean salads, pasta salads, cheesy salads or a combination of them.
starfishmummy · 10/12/2021 18:50

DS and I both like a good amount of veg with a meal and at smaller portion of protein. DH js the opposite so if he cooks I have to remind him to cook "loads of veg" or make a "big salad" otherwise we each get one sprout each!

maddiemookins16mum · 10/12/2021 19:01

I had a sausage with loadsa batter and a massive fried potato ‘salad’ tonight, the ‘salad’ was just chips btw.
