AIBU to not understand the outrage over the government’s so-called Christmas party?

OneRuleForThem · 07/12/2021 22:33

I feel like this is only an issue if people automatically followed guidelines like robots. We were “told” not to visit our own families over Christmas. Nobody tells me whether I can or can not visit my own family, so I did, and had a lovely and nice normal Christmas last year.

It seems people are up in arms over the fact that Downing Street allegedly (do I have to say allegedly?) had a Christmas party and flounced the “rules” without social distancing. My only reaction is…And? And so? So what? Did anyone expect the government NOT to do something like this? I don’t know why people are up in arms over it tbh. It’s not like this government is brand new to people and they didn’t have prior information that this government backtrack and “do as I say not as i do” ALL THE TIME.

I really don’t get why people are so outraged by this. My main reaction is…why did you listen to them in the first place expecting them to be some kind of moral leaders? AIBU?

OP posts:
DillDanding · 08/12/2021 08:38

Like the majority of people. We cancelled our Christmas plans last years in line with the rules.

So yes, I’m annoyed with anyone who didn’t comply. And if those making the laws didn’t even follow them, people prevented by the rules from seeing their loved ones at the end of their life have been taken for fools.

SpritzingAperol · 08/12/2021 08:40

Whatevs OP, this isn't about why did posters do this or that.

This is all about you and what you did isn't it?

Tbh most people follow the law and do the correct thing. It's not surprising. Not surprising at all.

Look at the empty streets of our towns during lockdown. Look at the cancellation of normal life over the last months.
Look at the millions vaccinated.

Your OP casually suggests that of course you brought the law. Nope most people don't do that even in really, really tough circumstances. Read this thread.

This thread is all about look at me, look what I did and justify it because of that dick head prime minister. Well you deserve each other.

Enjoy your little moment OP.

Practicebeingpatient · 08/12/2021 08:40

You aren't annoyed because you chose to break the same law. I would imagine muggers aren't outraged by other muggers and drink drivers don't frown on other drink drivers. I chose to follow the law (because I generally do follow laws) and I'm pissed off with them.

Blanketpolicy · 08/12/2021 08:40

So my opinion is: WHY did you listen to them? I think the government is a joke so I certainly didn’t listen to their advice and allow myself to be a punchline

This government is blatantly immoral and corrupt and it is not surprising those without a modicum of critical thinking skills would not listen or rebel like a child being told what to do.

It was clear, as a collective, we had to reduce the pressure on the overwhelmed and underfunded NHS to help those people, who were someone's much loved mum, dad, grandparent, brother, sister or friend, that did get severely ill or needed other treatment. We did this for each other, not for the government and everyone who did should be proud of the part they played.

You post proudly about how you didn't "listen" totally unaware that you display the exact same flavour of immorality as the government and politicians you so condemn. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

@whenwillthemadnessend

It's a disgrace. I actually voted for tory this election as I felt the other parties were worse (Corbyn). I'm generally a floater voter anyway but this is the last straw for me

They are piss takers.

I will vote elsewhere next election

Such fun seeing the cool rule breakers out this this morning feigning incredulity that the plebs decided to follow rules and be the sheeple the cool kids knew they always were and not understanding why people might be a tiny bit cross.

Big pat on the back to you for being so clever. Have some wine and cheese to celebrate your intellectual superiority Wine

Madhairday · 08/12/2021 08:42

@Ifartglitterybaubles

We lost my sister to Covid, she was 47. We couldn't go to the funeral because we were following the rules at that time. My mum watched her daughters funeral on facetime because she couldn't travel the 300 miles as she was shielding. She died of Cancer 6 weeks later. WE followed the rules this Government set whilst they threw parties and laughed about it. If you honestly can't understand why this is an issue or why people are angry then I don't know what else to say.

I can't even... I am beyond angry.

I'm so sorry for your losses. Flowers

I'm not surprised you're angry. I am too. Incandescent with anger to see these people joking about their secret parties when most of us were doing our best to stay distanced from loved ones in order to ease the mass death and disability around us.

It's sickening and they should be brought to account.

Pedalpushers · 08/12/2021 08:45

Well done you for not obeying the law, have a medal. I absolutely did because my then unvaccinated immunocompromised father would have died from Covid if I'd been so selfish as to go around when cases were skyrocketing and so would the many others who would have ended up in ICU. The government supposedly put in this law to prevent this happening and yet flouted it themselves, I'm not sure how you can be so confused as to why people are mad about that, I would have thought it was pretty obvious? As for 'what did you expect' well, yes how silly of us to expect our elected leaders to follow the laws they made, obviously we are all so much more dumb than you, oh superior OP.

sauceyorange · 08/12/2021 08:45

The more I think about your argument OP, the stupider it gets.

Essentially you're saying "I have broken all the rules. The government is full of people who have broken the rules. They are dicks! So you should break the rules like me."

Hmm. Touch incoherent.

LookItsMeAgain · 08/12/2021 08:51

@OneRuleForThem

If the majority of people who responded have said they weren’t surprised , why did you listen? I just don’t understand that.
It wasn't guidelines. It wasn't advice. It wasn't even a recommendation.

IT
WAS
THE
LAW

The government sets the laws and the people follow those laws. Except these 50 or so decided not to.
While the rest of the country, including those hard workers in the front line that people clapped for at 8pm were following those laws, these shower of shites decided "Fuck them and the horse they rode in on, we're having our Christmas Party. Now nobody say anything".

Johnson has lied over and over and over again to the electorate, to the House of Commons and to his Conservative party members. He lied about the impact of Brexit, he lied about and supported Cummings when he took his jaunt up to Barnard Castle and he's lying again. How many lies is enough to bring the man down?

In the 1990's to the early 2000's we had a Taoiseach that was nicknamed The Teflon Taoiseach because no matter how bad the scandal, nothing ever stuck to him. He weathered so many scandals. Is this same phenomenon happening in the halls of Westminster? Do you have a Teflon Prime Minister or perhaps he should be called a "Plastic Prime Minister" as he isn't real. He doesn't belong on this planet if he thinks that treating his electorate like this.

I'm just watching and waiting for the opposition to bring him down, once and for all. Come on Sir Kier - do your thing!

twelly · 08/12/2021 08:52

The energies directed to criticise the government over this is disproportionate in comparison with other other govt actions. Do I think the govt should follow the law?: Yes. Do I think the govt needs to set an example? yes
But there are more important issues - directing resources to investigate this when resources are limited and stretched is not in my view the wise. This happened last year - political it is now on record. Too much time is spent on pursuing peripheral issues not the key issues which is the mismanagement of the pandemic, the appalling fiasco in Afgahanstan - these are more important.

Also if everyone had broken the rules things would have been a lot worse. So those 'robots' helped save everyone and OP from a more ridiculous lockdown. I think there's a difference between following orders without question, and not being a fucking selfish idiot who hears the law, looks into the data etc and realises that its sad but for the best for one year. If the government said, for example, no one can wear red again I'm sure many would think what a crock of crap thats not going to affect anyone if I wear red; but this wasn't the case.
CornishYarg · 08/12/2021 08:55

@BoredZelda

YABU for your reasoning.

I can’t get too worked up about it as in the scheme of things, they have done much, much worse and concentrating on issues like this let’s them off the hook for those things.

So because they're so shit and morally corrupt, it's not worth anyone worrying about the party. But if they weren't so crap, it would be a problem?
ThatCampWitch · 08/12/2021 08:56

Ooh yes, well done @OneRuleForThem, you’re so much brighter than the rest of the sheeple! Congratulations.

What exactly is it that you are getting from sneering at people who followed the LAW? Whatever it is, I hope it makes you feel better. You come across like a complete and utter cunt.

JudesBiggestFan · 08/12/2021 08:58

This government is scum, of that there's no doubt. Nevertheless, the character of Boris Johnson was clear well before he was voted in with an 80 seat majority. People overwhelmingly wanted a lying, adulterous, good time guy as prime minister. Therefore, situation is entirely not surprising.
As the Government clearly knows, there is no significant risk to the vast majority of people from CoVID with or without vaccines. If there was, they wouldn't have dared have a party at the very height of the pandemic.
Lockdown should never ever have happened and I'm tired of hearing the outrage. I save mine for the reality that thousands of children, Arthur Labinjo Hughes just one of them, who were left to their fate because of ridiculously over the top rules. Factored in as collateral damage. If this situation takes the suggestion of more restrictions off the table because there is no chance of compliance, then all to the good. Lockdown should never have happened, we should all have resisted and yes, we have been made fools of.

Doubleraspberry · 08/12/2021 09:00

My friend works in a busy central London A&E. Last Christmas she posted this on her blog. This is why people are angry - it’s about the personal sacrifice that most of us made for the greater good, and the effect it had on us - even those of us who haven’t lost people.

LiveFromNewYork · 08/12/2021 09:01

I followed the rules but agree in no way did I expect Boris and the government to. It’s always one rule for them, but people seem to almost enjoy being wronged and amused by the antics, else why vote in such an incompetent and self centred man? (Was just the same when he was London mayor)

Feelingoktoday · 08/12/2021 09:03

OP do you remember the case of a family whose father had died. At the funeral the son went to sit next to his grieving mother and the funeral staff told him he wasn’t allowed. This widow, mother, wife, human, had to sit on n her own at a funeral. And you are telling us you didn’t care and broke the rules and F everyone else. Let’s hope when your partner or H does you can’t grieve properly.

Parker231 · 08/12/2021 09:03

The OP seems incredibly proud that she broke the law and potentially put people at risk. Very odd poster.

Bear65 · 08/12/2021 09:03

I smell a troll, or a journalist fishing for article fodder @OneRuleForThem....

sauceyorange · 08/12/2021 09:04

I have to say, reading this thread has really cheered me up. The vast vast majority in here and probably across the country are proper fucking grownups. Thank Christ!

And so sorry for all those who made terrible choices. I for one am grateful. I was heavily pregnant and my partner works in intensive care. Every single person who followed the rules made life safer for him, me and all of us. I may be here because of you.

Thank you Thanks

teateaandcoffee · 08/12/2021 09:04

@OneRuleForThem what’s your feeling about tax evasion?
What if I were to say I have been evading paying my taxes for years, but then so have a lot of MPs. And so you, OP, are a complete mug for paying your taxes, like a robot hahaha…
Personally I think you’re a troll as I don’t know anyone in their right mind who would make a statement like yours with a straight face and expect anyone to agree with them.

KrispyKale · 08/12/2021 09:05

The phrase scum rises keeps popping up in my brain.

allthingsred · 08/12/2021 09:06

Yabu in not understanding that people obeyed the law at that point. And were/are bereft at missing precious time with loved ones that aren't here now.

Yanbu in thinking that people know this government are a bunch of hypocritical 'do as I say' liars and people shouldn't be surprised by it
