70th party & Nits

NC for this.

My FIL is having a small 70th party in January.
It will be for immediate family only, about 20people.
BIL will be there with his 5children
(All under 10).
The 5 DC have ALWAYS got nits because BIl and SIL rarely treat them.
I have 2x DC who have got nits from their cousins 6x so far.
Dh and I have gone LC with BIL for a while because of this issue (and a few others issues too)
We have had to see them at some family events and sometimes they've turned up at Inlaws house when we've been there.
The DC have all played together , despite us trying to keep ours at a distance.
Nit repelent has worked a few times and failed other times- I had been keeping a bottle in baby change bag incase we met up unexpectantly!

I've told DH that I dont want us to go to the 70th party, as I've had enough of paying for nit solution and spraying us with nit repelent , ( It stinks) incase we bump into BIL and his kids.

DH agrees but feels we have to go as Its FIL milestone bday.

The whole family is aware of the nit issue and have told BIL so many times- Nothing is done.

AIBU to not go to party?

@tangyandsalty

I CONSTANTLY remove nits from my kids hair - they are 7 and 9 and literally impossible to keep them nit free - I have done full treatment on our whole family several times.

I've had two kids go through school and only one of them ever had nits, and that was on one occasion. I don't really think it's impossible to keep your kids nit free.

Perhaps pps kids go to school with ops niblings....

I think some areas must have supernits. I had a few years where I was constantly, constantly treating my kids but it's stopped now they're older. Maybe they have closer friends than those of you who are always nit free? That was a joke. Nits are just a fact of life and have been since humans began. Don't understand why people are so precious about it beyond yes it being a massive pain in the arse. The idea that someone would avoid an important family party because of them is nuts.

There is always 'that family' who don't treat their children. One year I had one of them in my class and the mother accused me of giving her nits. She said it was my fault so I should have to treat them.

I'd go, but the I'd also say something to their parents and I'd report to school if nothing was done. My child wasn't allowed in school until I'd treated her head lice.

Please protect these kids.

@CloudyStorms

Are the family quite hard up? Could you and DH buy them nit treatment for the week before?
You don’t need to spend £ on treatment. I spent close to £80 on various treatments for me & DD and it still didn’t clear them all. The most effective thing was a 90p conditioner from home bargains and a long toothed metal nit comb. Required lots of persistence. This is why people allow nits to persist, they can’t put the effort in to thoroughly clear them.

Delegate nit removal to your DH.

Get a tea tree spray. Spray in hair. Plait long hair. Spray again.
Spray on short hair. Spray again.

Tell your children not to touch heads with their cousins.

Poor kids their heads must be really itchy

@lanthanum

Make all the kids hats with "Grandad's 70th" on - to wear throughout the party? There must be someone does customised hats...
Maybe the rubber swim hats 😂

@saraclara

So you plan to punish FIL for BIL's rubbishness? That makes no sense.

As people have said, use repellent, tie hair back.

She's not punishing anyone she's protecting her children from an inevitable annoyance
Bollindger · 08/12/2021 11:43

Please get a nitty gritty comb.
We would brush their hair then comb again and again after any visit to someone I worried about.
Making it a part of your daily routine means they never get nits for more than an hour.

GrrrlPwr · 11/12/2021 22:58

Well did the children go to the party? And did they catch nits again?
