Christmas: would you go? Pregnant, relative just tested positive

Apologies, this is a repost. I originally posted on the Coronavirus topic, and the responses have been very helpful, but I wonder if I’m getting a possibly ever so slightly one sided sense of opinions, as those posters are more likely to have a vested interest in the topic.

DH and I were due to spend Christmas with family who live 4-5 hours away from us. Unfortunately one relative (primary age child) has just tested positive. They are now in 10 days of isolation. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be too much of a big deal, and in theory, once relative was out of isolation we’d have travelled up as planned for Christmas. The major hitch is that I’m just entering the third trimester of a very high risk pregnancy, I’m taking a lot of medication to sustain the pregnancy, and we have been so, so careful and cautious. I WFH and quite literally only go to the supermarket. Relative will be out of isolation before Christmas, but I still feel very nervous about it. I’ve had one Pfizer jab, second one due in January. What would you do in my shoes?

YANBU: don’t go
YABU: go

No way would I go considering your high risk pregnancy. Flowers

Aquamarine1029 · 06/12/2021 17:11

Absolutely not. I wouldn't be mixing with anyone, anywhere, especially if you're not vaccinated.

SoftPillow · 06/12/2021 17:14

I'm quite happy with risk but in your case I'd hunker down this Xmas, Covid positive or not, it's probably a risk you don't need to take (and don't need the stress of taking)

Stay at home, have your baby safely in 2022 and take it to theirs for Xmas next year. Best of luck

SarahJeffers341 · 06/12/2021 17:15

No way. I wouldn’t see anyone this Xmas if I was in a high risk pregnancy … just not worth it.

JaninesEyePatch · 06/12/2021 17:17

Nope.

DrunkenKoala · 06/12/2021 17:18

No, i wouldn’t go either.

Coldenoughforyou · 06/12/2021 17:19

No definitely not. Just cancel.

5keletor · 06/12/2021 17:20

No, I wouldn't go.

WheelieBinPrincess · 06/12/2021 17:21

You’ve posted already and had answers already. These are all going to be just opinions.

Use your common sense and make the right call.

Whst is anyone really going to be able to say to convince you, it’s you that has to travel and it’s you that knows your pregnancy and the risks involved.

fairlygoodmother · 06/12/2021 17:21

No, I wouldn't go. The original relative will be fine by then but he/she could easily have passed it on to other family members.

ElfontheShelfisLookingatYou · 06/12/2021 17:21

No, no, no.

alrightfella · 06/12/2021 17:22

Nope I'd stay at home. Enjoy a lovely, quiet Christmas just your and your dh. Wishing you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 06/12/2021 17:22

Definitely not. If the child is positive now, the parents are likely to be by Christmas, even asymptomatically, so still a clear danger to you. All the graphs show this household transmission pattern.

Stay home, hunker down and stay safe, for the sake of you and your baby.

nanbread · 06/12/2021 17:22

It's not even a Covid thing for me, there are loads of nasty colds and coughs going round, plus the long traveling, given it's high risk best to take it easy.

slippersockgrey · 06/12/2021 17:22

No way I'd go - it's quite likely it'll spread through the house covering Xmas anyway.

You've got a life time of Christmases once the baby is here. Stay at home away from everyone and have a quiet one.

Pippa12 · 06/12/2021 17:22

Nope, stay at home, especially as you aren’t double vaccinated. I’m an icu nurse, and I’ve seen so many pregnant ladies admitted with covid, please don’t risk anything at all especially being in your third trimester.

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/12/2021 17:24

It's not worth it is it.

Not a chance in hell would I

LittleOwl153 · 06/12/2021 17:26

Your 28/29 weeks into a very high risk pregnancy so 31/32 weeks by Christmas... no I wouldn't be travelling 4-5hours away from the hospital that has all my notes etc. And that's without the covid situation...

DSGR · 06/12/2021 17:28

But they’ve just had Covid - they are probably the safest set of people you can be around. They will be over it by the time you get there and immune for a good 3-6 months. However, if your pregnancy is high risk and you’re feeling nervous, you won’t enjoy it at all.
Well done on getting vaccinated, that is brilliant and absolutely the right thing for you and baby

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 06/12/2021 17:28

It would depend on if anyone else in the family had caught it from the child in the meantime and if they are finished the isolation period from the date of symptoms. Which unless they both catch it right away then they won’t be.

In all honestly I would assume they will catch it and as a result plan to not go if that makes sense.

FiHefyd · 06/12/2021 17:33

No way. Stay at home with your feet up and enjoy your last restful Christmas.

DDivaStar · 06/12/2021 17:42

TBH with a very high risk pregnancy I wouldn't have considered going in the first place.

The childs case wouldn't overly worry me, their immune response will be better than most now.

You just don't need to take any risks at this point in pregnancy, have a nice quiet Christmas at home and prepare for your new arrival.

Coconutscrub · 06/12/2021 17:43

Not a chance in hell would I be going and no one should expect you too, you are precious and so is your baby, best wishes.

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2021 17:44

No I wouldn’t be going anywhere at the moment, it’s not worth it.

There will be many more Christmases to come! Have a quite one this year at home.

underneaththeash · 06/12/2021 17:46

I wouldn't go that far with a high-risk pregnancy even without covid.

Don't say anything yet, but in a few days, mention that the consultant/midwife thinks that travelling that far is a bad idea.
