Christmas: would you go? Pregnant, relative just tested positive

Apologies, this is a repost. I originally posted on the Coronavirus topic, and the responses have been very helpful, but I wonder if I’m getting a possibly ever so slightly one sided sense of opinions, as those posters are more likely to have a vested interest in the topic.

DH and I were due to spend Christmas with family who live 4-5 hours away from us. Unfortunately one relative (primary age child) has just tested positive. They are now in 10 days of isolation. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be too much of a big deal, and in theory, once relative was out of isolation we’d have travelled up as planned for Christmas. The major hitch is that I’m just entering the third trimester of a very high risk pregnancy, I’m taking a lot of medication to sustain the pregnancy, and we have been so, so careful and cautious. I WFH and quite literally only go to the supermarket. Relative will be out of isolation before Christmas, but I still feel very nervous about it. I’ve had one Pfizer jab, second one due in January. What would you do in my shoes?

YANBU: don’t go
YABU: go

I think it would depend on why you are high risk - there are going to be some conditions that are just high risk for pregnancy, some just for covid and some for both.

0palescent · 06/12/2021 18:44

I'd stay at home this year.

521Jeanie · 06/12/2021 18:49

You wouldn't have caught me travelling 4-5 hours from home in the third trimester of a very high risk pregnancy, even before Covid!

RosieLeeD · 06/12/2021 18:51

No don't go. You need to put you and your baby first no matter what and everyone needs to understand and respect that. I'm in a similar situation, pregnant via IVF and on lots of meds including immune suppressants. I will be seeing my mum at Christmas but she will be careful for the week beforehand and will be doing a test before seeing us. I am double vaccinated.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/12/2021 18:54

I wasn't travelling 4-5 hours in the third trimester anyway. Far too uncomfortable.
High risk, I wouldn't want to be staying much more than an hour or so away from my hospital depending on the potential urgency of the risk.

KatharinaRosalie · 06/12/2021 19:05

A friend of mine just had it. She was positive, then 10 days later one DC, another 10 days and the other DC, then DH - so when you go, it's quite likely that some other member of the household is currently positive. I would not.

Nope not a chance

@LittleOwl153

Your 28/29 weeks into a very high risk pregnancy so 31/32 weeks by Christmas... no I wouldn't be travelling 4-5hours away from the hospital that has all my notes etc. And that's without the covid situation...
This with bells on!
IsabelHerna · 18/12/2021 18:50

YANBU, why risk it?

Suzi888 · 18/12/2021 18:55

Not a cats chance in hell. Forget covid, I wouldn’t want to go with a high risk pregnancy. Have a quiet one this year, it’s just one day- there will be many more to come.

Noix · 18/12/2021 18:59

Absolutely not. I am 16 weeks, triple vaccinated and have doubts about going even without anyone having had a positive. Changes are there will be transmission within the family after so it won't be over after 10 days. You are NOT protected at all.

NameChanged15729 · 18/12/2021 18:59

I wouldn’t in your shoes. Not so much because of the child whose tested positive but because presumably said child has parents you’d also be seeing. Parents who may develop symptoms between now and Christmas and who may be lax/avoid testing due to not wanting to upset Christmas plans...

curlii103 · 18/12/2021 19:04

I was fully prepared to tell you to relax but in your situation i think id just stay home and watch greys anatomy until the baby arrives!
