To call my cat Plum Plum?

Ever since I was a child I have wanted a cat called Plum Plum (Plum for short). DH has finally agreed to get a cat and a tiny ginger kitten is arriving on Christmas Eve. Plum now seems even more appropriate as a festive name but DH is not convinced Grin

I also like Remi but this has been veto-ed. DH likes Alfred and Edward but I think these are much too grand for a tiny, fluffy cat!

So … AIBU to want to call my cat Plum Plum and, if so, what shall I call him?

I have to say I have renamed three cats after getting them and getting to know them.
@slashlover

No I’m not in Ireland or Scotland? What have I missed? Am I calling my cat something rude 😆
It's a slang/offensive name for a Protestant person here. I'm probably used to it as I'm quite near Glasgow and sectarianism can be a problem here.

slashlover · 05/12/2021 10:58

Do people actually call their cats by their names? Mine is Cassie but is called Cass Cass, Cassie Girl, Baby Cassie and Baby Cass (do do do do do).

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there’s the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter—
But all of them sensible everyday names,
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that’s particular,
A name that’s peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum—
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there’s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover—
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular name.

If you’re comfortable standing on the doorstep calling “Plum Plum”, why not Grin

tcjotm · 05/12/2021 11:18

Plumkins Kittenbeasten

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 05/12/2021 17:40

And pictures are compulsory on any cat/kitten thread! When Sir Alfred Edward Plumington III arrives of course!

StrawberryFizz26 · 05/12/2021 17:40

Lord Plum Plum of Plumley

Iwasfeelingepic · 05/12/2021 17:47

I wanted to call my cat Casper but DH said no so instead I called him Count Dracula, Dracula for short, sometimes just Dracs. It really suited him as he liked to nibble people. Though the man on the Insurance phone line had a hard time trying to hold his laughter in when I registered him.

VestaTilley · 05/12/2021 20:56

Plum is fine.

Plum plum makes me think of varicose veins and testicles... sorry, OP.

I like your DH’s suggestions! Enjoy your kitten.

GetTheFlockOutOfHere · 05/12/2021 20:59

Why not 'Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum?'

Musmerian · 05/12/2021 21:02

I love Plum Plum. Pursuit of Love is one of my favourite comfort reads and Linda Radlett has a French Bulldog called Plon Plon.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 05/12/2021 21:09

Where are you getting this kitten from that they’ll let it go to it’s new home on christmas eve Hmm

Please bear in mind that if it is coming from a less than reputable place, accessing vet care over the holiday period will a) be eye wateringly expensive, and b) be an utter pita, and will likely involve driving miles to the “on call” vet practice for your area.

Even something as simple as fleas, you’ll have a nightmare getting hold of spot on for at least a few days.

Otherwise Plum is a great name. Not sure the other plum is needed…

simonisnotme · 05/12/2021 21:11

it will end up as Plum Bum Grin

Nc123 · 05/12/2021 21:17

Plum Plum is fine! Go for it.

If your cat is anything like our cats they will have a million nicknames as well so anything too formal won’t last. We called our younger cat William and today alone we’ve addressed him as: Billy Good (our surname is not Good), Willybum, Egg Thief and Unrelated Ginger Bastard. He answers to all of them.

DENMAN03 · 05/12/2021 21:19

It's a great name.. my cat Prune would always be called Pwun Pwun.. their names morph over time I find!

tiredanddangerous · 05/12/2021 21:21

My first thought was bollock. Sorry.

Sugar plum?

LubaLuca · 05/12/2021 21:23

A new born King to see, pa rum pum Plum Plum.

As long as you promise to call it by singing this every single time you need to call it, yes.

crackofdoom · 05/12/2021 21:29

My cats have beautiful, pretentious, high faluting names.

Which is why we never use them, and they answer instead to BooftyPoofty and Moopy Poopy. Or simply “You fuckhead” 😆

Aww , many years ago I read a book about a family who bought a farmhouse and inherited (as you do) a small fat black Shetland pony called Plum.
Their DC learned to ride on him. He was the type of pony who if he CBA one day just lay down and refused to budge Grin
Sad day when he lay down in his field and went to he great stable in the sky (very elderly)

Plum is a marvellous name ..............for a black cat .
Trade ginger in .

PussInBin20 · 05/12/2021 21:42

@Kamelion

I suggest Barry or Keith.
😂😂 I’m with you!
IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/12/2021 21:46

@MintyCedric, we had an Eddy, aka Edward Gray-Catt, who was The Best Cat In The World.

Alltheblue · 05/12/2021 21:46

You must call him plum.

Schmoozer · 05/12/2021 21:48

2 plums = bollocks 😊

AlmostAJillSandwich · 05/12/2021 21:49

As a child i wanted a white kitten named holly for christmas. But we had a very territorial cat who never would have allowed another cat into the house, plus i dont think my parents wanted a second cat.
For christmas 2018 i was surprised with a little white hamster named holly Grin
