To call my cat Plum Plum?

Ever since I was a child I have wanted a cat called Plum Plum (Plum for short). DH has finally agreed to get a cat and a tiny ginger kitten is arriving on Christmas Eve. Plum now seems even more appropriate as a festive name but DH is not convinced Grin

I also like Remi but this has been veto-ed. DH likes Alfred and Edward but I think these are much too grand for a tiny, fluffy cat!

So … AIBU to want to call my cat Plum Plum and, if so, what shall I call him?

@Mangozesty

Plum is a fantastic name! I don't think let's really need nicknames, just call them the name you want to call them? I know someone who has a cat she called Oscar but immediately announced he would go by Ozzie, I find this so odd. The cat doesn't know or care!

Really? I didn't know any pets who don't evolve at least a handful of nicknames. Last night I was with an Oscar who is also Ozzie, Oski, Oski-Poski, Oscarillo and so on.

OP, Plum / Plum Plum is a fine name.

@hotmeatymilk

Plum Plum is a bit… Testicle Testicle.

Haha Grin

Maybe plummy instead?!

violetbunny · 05/12/2021 09:44

I know someone whose cat is called Polly Ping Pong Lunchbox, so I think Plum Plum is fine.

hazelnutpraline · 05/12/2021 09:47

Yes, I think all pets should be named after food items personally

TroysMammy · 05/12/2021 09:49

Whatever you call your cat, and Plum sounds fine, don't refer to treats as yum yums. I feel a right twat trying to get my cat inside when calling his name hasn't worked. He comes running for yum yums.

LindaEllen · 05/12/2021 09:50

Call kitty Plum Plum. I like it. It's cute. You can get away calling cats names that are a bit towards the embarrassing side as you're not going to have to shout them across a field like you might a dog.

Plus, it doesn't matter what you call a cat. They won't answer regardless!

Porcupineintherough · 05/12/2021 09:51

Plum is fine, Plum Plum is grim. Of course if you call him Plum you'll probably call him Plum Plum most of the time but at least he'll still have the dignity of his original name. Wink

Bicnod · 05/12/2021 09:55

Plum Plum is an excellent name for a cat IMO.

My first thought was sugar plum fairy rather than testicles Hmm

ShinyMe · 05/12/2021 09:57

Is it a while since you've had a cat? The cat's planned name NEVER sticks! The only place the real name is used is in the vet's waiting room. If you're happy with them shouting PLUM PLUM WAINWRIGHT! then go for it. Otherwise it won't matter what his official name is as he'll end up getting called Plummy, Plumpster, Lord Plumpington McFuffles, Mister Tickles, Catface, Squishy Sausage McBiscuits and a dozen other names once you've got to know his personality.

Now I'm going to be singing Brown Girl in the Ring all day. She looks like a sugar in a plum. Plum Plum.

nordica · 05/12/2021 10:04

Vets will use the cat's name to call you in from the waiting room, so it needs to be something not too embarrassing for that. 😺

Welldarn · 05/12/2021 10:10

Call him Proddy that is what I wish I had called my cat because he Prods everything Grin. I am now forever shouting Proddy stop prodding that glass, hairbrush your brother, he is an incessant prodder! HmmSmile

Jabbawasarollingstone · 05/12/2021 10:10

He's ginger?

I think one plum is better than two! I didnt make the testicle connection though. I never refer to them as plums

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 05/12/2021 10:12

@Tal45

I'd call her Plum and have Plum Plum as a cute NN.
Excellent solution.
cabrillolighthouse · 05/12/2021 10:12

Makes me think of Linda Radlett's dog in Pursuit of Love, he was called Plon Plon!

Mumoblue · 05/12/2021 10:14

Why not just call him Plum and use Plum Plum as a nickname? Or just call him that?
I don’t think the distinction between actual name and nickname is that big in cats. I probably call my cat “Goblin Princess” more than I call her by her actual name.

slashlover · 05/12/2021 10:22

@Welldarn

Call him Proddy that is what I wish I had called my cat because he Prods everything Grin. I am now forever shouting Proddy stop prodding that glass, hairbrush your brother, he is an incessant prodder! HmmSmile
I'm assuming you're not in Ireland or certain parts of Scotland?
Panacotta · 05/12/2021 10:28

Just one Plum please!

Panacotta · 05/12/2021 10:30

Sugar Plum
Professor Plum
Dusky Plum
Plum Pudding
Pussy Plum Fairy

????

SalsaLove · 05/12/2021 10:33

P. G Wodehouse was called Plum. I think that’s a solid connection.

GuppytheCat · 05/12/2021 10:35

On another note, is Christmas Eve (and Christmas Day) a calm, quiet sort of Tim in your house?

Kittens are fragile, easily spooked and very easy to lose at the best of times. He or she will need time to settle in away from the main household.

GuppytheCat · 05/12/2021 10:36

Tim = time. Not a different suggestion for a cat name.

SequinnedShawl · 05/12/2021 10:38

You're bringing a kitten into your home at Christmas? I hope that you don't have young children who will be overexcited anyway and terrify the little mite!

If you've a quiet house with just adults then yes, give the kitty a chance to explore his new home in peace but otherwise hold fire.

Welldarn · 05/12/2021 10:52

@slashlover

No I’m not in Ireland or Scotland? What have I missed? Am I calling my cat something rude 😆
