To wonder why do few girls have short hair nowadays

That’s it really. When I was at high school (80s), half the girls had short hair. However, I can only think of one girl my DDs (who have long hair) have known through school who had short hair and she has long hair now. When did short hair fall out of favour?

It started in the late 90s so it's clearly not a fashion, it's a social movement.

The more "gender fluidity" has become a buzzword, the less gender fluid people actually look. Its strange.

Boys are required to look more "boyish" today too.

Short hair isn’t fashionable now. I the cycle of short hair being in fashion means that most women who have shirt hair are the mums of today’s young women; short hair at the moment is more 40/50s and older so it’s ageing for young women. I think aswell fashion trends today are about ‘feminine’ shapes in a more classic sense- bums/tums! Thanks to Kim K. Long hair is part of this look. X

Girls are much fatter these days. You need cheekbones to look good with short hair.

Wow. Bitchy.

@WaltzingTilda

I wonder if short hair come into fashion in the 80s because of Princess Diana? Now we have long haired princesses and other (SM) "influencers"

I was a teen in the 80s and I think Diana was a massive influence on hair trends. So many girls I was at school with had theirs short but very 'flicky' and sideswept like Diana's.

Sorry, my quote disappeared. I was quoting the person who said girls are fatter nowadays. I don't agree.

@gofg out of interest, how often do you have to go to the hairdressers to keep your hair in a short style?

@EightWheelGirl

I don’t know why so many people are offended by PP pointing out that the youth are fatter now than in the 80s. It’s an indisputable fact.

Because it has nothing to do with OP's question, HTH.

The girls round here aren't fat. They are all stick thin with very long hair.

A lot of the replies to this thread have shown exactly why girls today don’t have short hair. 🤦‍♀️

Because if they cut off their hair they have to deal with peers (and some adults) assuming they want to be boys. Or are trans or non-binary or whatever.

It's not just hair. I look back at my childhood photographs and all the girls had short hair, jeans, standard coats, t-shirts; pretty much exactly what their brothers wore (and in my case direct hand-me-downs from my brothers). Now even t-shirts for boys and girls are different. Jeans for girls are tight, with no pockets; tops are crop tops with short or no sleeves.

Girls are expect to fit "gender norms" in a way that we weren't back in the 70s and 80s.

Spot on.

I guess it was just a trend in the 80s, with many things trends things change. I think a lot of girls had short hair in the 80's because there was less effort in styling maybe? Hair products and styling tools were probably less available then? Whereas now a lot of people opt for longer now. I think some people look incredible with short hair though, I don't think it would work for me though and could imagine myself looking awful.

My mum has always had short hair since she was pretty young and even now she's got the same style she's always had. She tried to have my hair cut short a few times I didn't want to. My mother always believed women over a certain age shouldn't have long hair at all - my hair is shoulder length so not long but you won't be be finding me cutting it off anytime soon! I haven't got the facial features for short hair 😅

You’re all looking at this the wrong way - everyone had short hairs in the 80s because Of Princess Diana.

Celebs (media types not pop stars 😂) would copy that then we would follow suit

I found a class photo- ALL the girls had proper short hair

Looking at my dd (17) and friends I would say that lots of girls do have short. Only one of dds friends has long hair. The rest have hair that's shoulder length or above.

When I drop her at college, there's a huge mix but most have it shortish.

I agree long hair has been around much longer (haha) than 10 years.
Edwardian women had long hair
Then bobs on the 20's, curls in the 30's, practical hair in the 40's war time
Bobs again on the 60's
Flowing locks in the 70's
Short and punky in the 80's
Definately flowing again from the 90's onwards.
Really the short styles of the 8's were the anomaly now seen on women in their 50's/60's. I am 45 and have had at least jaw length hair my whole life as have most of our comptempories.

I think it's fashion. My teenage dd has short hair but she doesn't use social media out of choice and never has so isn't so influenced by others.

I think it is much more difficult for british children to develop with confidence their own style/personality.everything is uniform and quite boring.it is only later in life when their own personality seems to shine and be visible.sadly,to often the bland clothing and hairstyles are worn all their lifes.

My dd has cropped hair, she had it cut short at 4 and it is now shorter than ever, besides lockdown when she shaved it off completely.
She looks stunning, she has a v pretty face but still gets called a boy and a he/she by boys at school.
I don't get it as to me she looks feminine, she is in no way butch.

I have often wondered this. Photos from when I was at school show a range of hairstyles….bobs, perms, long, shirt, spiky etc. now most girls have long hair. Just fashion I guess.

Purdy cuts….remember them??

DD is 4 and all her little friends have really long hair. They want to be princesses, like Elsa etc.
I don’t remember the Disney stuff being quite so omnipresent when I was a child. (It’s not because they’re fat and lack cheekbones though wtf)

I had short hair a few years back thinking it would be easier than long hair - it was such a faff styling it every day. It took far longer to straighten than when I have longer hair for one. Much more practical to have it longer so I can stick it in a ponytail or a bun and have it look presentable quickly rather than having to get up earlier to style it and still have it not look particularly good Grin

This. There is an assumption now that a girl with short hair isn't a girl. Misogyny basically.
