To think celebs that go on I’m a Celebrity are pathetic and desperate?

Would you go on it and have bugs dumped over you and have to drink cow testicles cocktails and munch on bulls anuses if your career was on the downwards path? AIBU to think they have no dignity, especially now when it’s been on for 20 years and it’s desperately sad and laughable?

The programme is bizarre anyway. How anyone finds it entertaining watching someone eat raw testicles or whatever while AD giggle away is beyond me. I remember as a kid Clive James showing us all some Japanese game-show that was similar (Endurance?) and the disbelief that that was entertainment.

SoniaFouler · 04/12/2021 23:14

@Sparklingbrook

I can if he’s handed a glass of crushed fish eyeballs and told “drink this”

Oh it’s one of those threads Hmm

Xmas Confused ?

I stopped watching when Alan Partridge Richard Madeley left.

Timeisavirtue · 04/12/2021 23:15

I like it, not this season though... I was reluctant last year but watched it as I loved shane Ritchie, this year I’ve found it very boring and after the storm I couldn’t bring myself to watch it again.I much prefer the jungle though. It would be shit without ant and dec, they really do complete it.

Alexahelp · 04/12/2021 23:17

@LadyCatStark

I agree it’s had its day TBH. Especially now it’s in the castle. People tuned when it was in Australia in as a bit of light escape from the drudgery of late autumn/ winter, we don’t want to watch more of the same! I know it’s not their fault it’s not in Australia but I hope they don’t carry it on in Wales.
Yeah this. It’s a job, as is panto, kids TV and many other things that may be considered ‘below’ some people but have a big audience. they all know what they’re signing up for and there’s a good volume of people who’ve done it previously who’ve had a big career boost from it. Less desperate but a calculated career move maybe - fair enough.
ssd · 04/12/2021 23:17

I'm enjoying this season, and Ant and Dec's banter

SoniaFouler · 04/12/2021 23:20

The only people who I can think had a career boost from it are Katie Price, Peter Andre and Kerry Katona and that was YEARS ago

@MustDust

It's entertainment TV and they're people in the entertainment industry, whether they're there to put food on the table or because they're genuinely enjoying, well, entertaining, it's not some keyboard warrior's place to call them pathetic and desperate. Either watch it or don't, but just don't be snide eh?
This is what I meant to quote Blush
ronniz · 04/12/2021 23:24

I don't like it, never really did except that water stormy challenge. Think it's still popular though. Celebs do it for cash & raise their profile. It's worked for many.

ChrissyPlummer · 04/12/2021 23:30

@Noeuf oh yes! Me and DB used to try and sneakily watch that when we were about 10. I hate IAC, they’re not usually THAT famous and the ones that were pretty well-known, it doesn’t seem to reignite their career in the way they hope.

readwhatiactuallysay · 04/12/2021 23:33

I always find it strange that people who sit behind a computer calling other people names, find people who are going out trying to earn a living and getting on with their lives....pathetic.

They may not be your cup of tea, or they may be in a desperate situation so need to earn money for themselves and their families, i find neither pathetic.

MustDust · 04/12/2021 23:34

Of course you can have an opinion. My opinion is I don't like reality TV, that doesn't mean I am saying horrid things about people who do it. They're really harsh words to call people just doing their job for one reason or another.

GreenLunchBox · 04/12/2021 23:35

Yes I was just thinking that I'd never do those trials for any amount of money so yes I do think the celebs are desperate

coodawoodashooda · 04/12/2021 23:35

@RAOK

It’s had its day.
Yeah. Why do they never quit whilst they are ahead?
Redglitter · 04/12/2021 23:39

I think its time they pulled the plug on the show. It used to be compulsive watching but it's definitely past its sell by date now. The series in this country have been awful. It might have benefited from a break for a couple of years til they could get back to Australia

Snoozysnoozy · 04/12/2021 23:40

I remember when Tarrant on tv was on. They used to show a Japanese program called Endurance. The contestants were made to do the same kind of things as they do on IACGMOOH. 'Normal' people bit celebrities. Make of that what you will.

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/12/2021 00:23

Well don’t watch it then?

They get paid a lot is why they do it. They’d probably think your job and salary was pathetic.

sorryforswearing · 05/12/2021 00:39

Great career boost for Phil Tufnell and Harry Rednapp,
There must be others too.

WomanStanleyWoman · 05/12/2021 00:54

As much as I wouldn’t want to participate myself, I really don’t find it that difficult to see why the celebrities want to be involved. It’s very good money for a relatively short period of pain. Danny Miller has had a lot of criticism for taking part so soon after his wife gave birth, but he’s been quite candid in saying that it means he could theoretically not work for a year and spend that time with his son instead. Surely you can see how that would be tempting?

It’s true that eating kangaroo bollocks on telly isn’t up there with a season at the National Theatre in prestige terms. But it’s not like the participants are turning down amazing offers to take part. Most of them aren’t going to get anything better in the short term, are getting a good deal for a short, if unpleasant, job, and it could raise their profiles in the long term. The appeal is pretty obvious.

Topseyt · 05/12/2021 00:59

I used to like it but my interest has waned over the last two or three years. I no longer even know who many of the so-called celebrities are. Nor do I really care that much.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 05/12/2021 01:01

I think the last time I watched that show was when Gillian McKeith “fainted”.

EightWheelGirl · 05/12/2021 01:06

It should be called ‘I’m Not a Celebrity Anymore, Get Me In Here’.

Mercurial123 · 05/12/2021 06:29

Never watched it. Anything with Ant and Dec would stop me watching. Have no interest in minor "celebrities" trying to gain exposure to get more work.

HeronLanyon · 05/12/2021 06:38

I’ve always seen it as pointless animal cruelty fir ‘entertainment’ to be honest.
I’d really be up for some version of it akin to The Island or Shipwrecked where the contestants actually had to be tested on survival skills and social bonding etc.

devildeepbluesea · 05/12/2021 06:41

I've never seen it so probably not best placed to comment!
However the reason I've never seen it is because it's always seemed like a pretty cringy and tasteless premise for a show.
