How much would you pay for these flowers?

AIBU to think that lovely as this bunch of flowers is, there is a certain price beyond which makes them a plain rip off? What would you have paid for this? First photo shows how it arrived from the florist - priced for 10 stems+ foliage. Jar not included. Would like to know what others think. Thank you!

@Summerfun54321

Wondering if anyone has ever received a terrible gift and thought “shit gift but great value for money”. OP I think you’re worrying about something that just shouldn’t be worried about when someone gives you a gift. Worry about saving the pennies on the weekly food shop or car insurance or other regular boring necessities.
Also true of me Blush In future I will learn to accept the present graciously and not to quibble about prices - this may be ostensibly about flower pricing but I have realised that my reaction on receiving it is more telling about myself. I do so love flowers Flowers Flowers Flowers

Can get better in Aldi for 3.99

@Scbchl

I doubt it.
AmyDudley · 03/12/2021 22:58

I'd argue that there is an awful lot of cheap filler in OPs bunch - it is largely foliage

I haven’t read all thread but these are my ideal bunch of flowers

I’d love those

I’d pay £15 but then I done go to actually florists very often

The foliage I can get £4 a bag from a florist tho the flowers may add up more

I love it tho!

I am having a lot of problems with a florist at the moment as well. Its my fathers birthday on Tuesday (he died last year) so I'm going home and had ordered a lovely silk display (costing over £500) for his grave. I ordered it in October to be completed by end November. Just had it confirmed that it is still not ready and won't be for his birthday. Am really upset and will have to try and find something else over the weekend. The florist claims there are a lot of problems with deliveries, getting decent supplies from Europe (Brexit, Covid etc). I can imagine this is probably is true but I think they could communicate better with customers/manage expectations. I thought I had given plenty of time for them to prepare...

I have bought flowers from the florist outside Liberty before. They are expensive and whilst the style is lovely when I walked past last week I noticed the flowers didn't look especially healthy. Perhaps they are also having supply issues? Or the weather is impacting? If so they should be able to reflect in the price or add something to the arrangement to liven it up? But as you have them home now and they were a gift from your family I hope you can enjoy the feelings behind them? Sorry you were disappointed.

Watapalava · 03/12/2021 23:03

God just seen £50!!

I can believe that tho as they’re very classy compared to your typical bunch

I’d say they’re quite posh tbh!

I’ve bought flowers from that shop years ago and paid £50 for a bunch then (a shared gift for work)

It's eucalyptus. It's not a cheap filler. A lot of foliage is just as expensive as flowers.
Watapalava · 03/12/2021 23:04

That amount of eucalyptus lptus is £8 alone in my garden centre but there’s a range of foliage there in addition to the flowers

forinborin · 03/12/2021 23:08

I like this perspective very much, thank you - much needed. Yes, it is often quite different how much I'll spend on myself and how much I'll spend on presents for others - you're absolutely right. DC (who can't do their own shopping) got DH to help them buy the bouquet, and DH (accidentally) spent this sum simply because they thought I would love it. And I do. Thank you so much for sharing, it is lovely to hear what people think
See, your DH and DC think you're worth it, then it must indeed be the case. And they are literally the only people who matter here, not us - a bunch or strangers on the Internet who have nothing better to do on Friday night Grin

EishetChayil · 03/12/2021 23:10

I would hate for my DH to spunk £55 on some weedy-looking flowers that will die within a week. It isn't a kind or sweet gesture. I'd rather put that sort of cash towards something useful.

TenoringBehind · 03/12/2021 23:13

Eucalyptus is expensive

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear this. Covid/Brexit has affected absolutely everything, even in the smallest things that aren't immediately obvious. This should rightly be a very special order and hopefully you'll find a suitable replacement in time, although even if you don't, hopefully you won't feel you need to compromise, because getting it right for your late father is key. It's so much about the thought. I am not disappointed with the flowers - I love them - but my focus on the price was misplaced. I will enjoy my flowers. Thank you for sharing. I also hope your order works out and that you'll have a wonderful day celebrating the most wonderful memories of your father next Tuesday FlowersFlowersFlowers

They are a nice bunch of flowers. Absolute bs could you get those from aldi or lidl. I think they would look better in a wider necked vase so they were more splayed out but they are nice

I think it's a bit mean to say your DH needs to learn a lesson from this. It's a nice gift, they are flowers you have said you like. Just enjoy them!

flowersforbrains · 03/12/2021 23:18

Anyone who manages to buy a bunch of long stemmed Dutch anemones with eucalyptus in ALDI/LIDL this weekend, please post a photo. I'd love to see it!!!

Thursdaymiami · 03/12/2021 23:19

I’m also amazed your children had £55 of spare cash.
Or do you mean your DH put a bit of their money in and topped it up.

controve · 03/12/2021 23:19

These threads and the cake ones always make me laugh with the ridiculously low prices people suggest.
I think realistically he paid more than they're really worth but I don't actually think that much more.
They'll look beautiful when they're open. We have anemones in the garden - planted by a previous owner - at first I didn't think they were up to much but once they opened they were lovely.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/12/2021 23:28

It's like comparing steak from the meat counter in Harrods to a packet of value sausages from Tesco

It might be on the shop/location, but I can't see it with the quality, unless these flowers are going to bloom somewhat. The flowers are currently hiding in what looks like a lot of privet hedge.

Was it one of those places with no prices OP, and he was too embarrassed to not buy them when he was told the price?

CarrotSticks19 · 03/12/2021 23:28

Just had a look and waitrose do a bouquet with 8 roses and 3 branches of eucalyptus for £38

This bunch has 8 maybe 10 anenomes and more than 3 branves of eucalyptus and is from a central London florist so it's clearly not massively overpriced. Maybe £45 would be more reasonable but 3.99 bunch from aldi it is not

It's like MN chicken all over again but with flowers!

RisingSunn · 03/12/2021 23:34

£12

Or maybe we value things differently? Spending that much on something so ephemeral is not for me.
