I can't find a fresh one. I've always bought fresh but can't order one and having a minor fret. I can find a fresh whole one for the price of a small bungalow but cannot pay that. What do you all do?

Mine is frozen. It’s sitting in the freezer as I type! Had the same one last year and it was lovely. Just make sure you defrost and cook it properly.

Lockheart · 03/12/2021 19:35

Buy whatever you like, why would that be unreasonable? It's a frozen turkey crown, not 2kg of cocaine.

Thetrainisinthestation · 03/12/2021 19:36

We had a frozen one last year as it was so last minute and unplanned

It was ok.

This year I’d rather do beef (or large chicken maybe) than stress about turkey availability

Frozen turkey is perfectly edible and will be full of gravy (turkey is a dry awful meat whether fresh or frozen anyway Grin)

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 03/12/2021 19:36

I have a frozen crown from the supermarket. Just make sure it's properly defrosted and cooked. I use a kidded roasting tin and put a bit of water in the bottom, keeps it from drying out and makes nice gravy.

BunTooti · 03/12/2021 19:37

I'm looking at frozen turkey crowns for the first time this year too. Any supermarket recommendations?

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 03/12/2021 19:37

Lidded not kidded!

MissConductUS · 03/12/2021 19:39

We had one for Thanksgiving and it was fine.

polkadotpjs · 03/12/2021 19:44

Chose AIBU for traffic. No experience of frozen and got family who ask a lot of questions and whom I usually lie to about how long I cook it for etc. They bought me a meat thermometer one year yet always say how moist it is (vile word )

We’ve always alternated between fresh and frozen, as long as it’s defrosted properly there’s really not that much difference in taste.

We steam cook ours and it always tastes good!

polkadotpjs · 03/12/2021 19:49

@DappyApple when you say steam roast, what do you mean? I roast under foil with a lot of liquid under. Is that the same?

I bought a really expensive fresh M&S Turkey Crown last xmas. Disappointing to say the least.

Just something basic (frozen or fresh) often works just as well IME!

PinkiOcelot · 03/12/2021 19:56

I will be buying a frozen turkey crown. They’re fine. I like the ones from Aldi.

TheCanyon · 03/12/2021 20:01

We always buy a turkey joint or crown from iceland, perfectly nice and does the job much easier than a fresh one.

Hahaha love this. Seriously OP just buy one. Don't stress about it. It's just frozen meat.

Why do they ask you so many questions? Do you have questionable food hygiene standards? A frozen one will come with cooking instructions.
LagunaBubbles · 03/12/2021 20:08

What's wrong with a frozen turkey that would make it unreasonable? Confused

I know it comes across a bit like you think there's something wrong with frozen tbh OP.
tandt5 · 03/12/2021 20:12

Tried frozen turkey from Iceland for the first time last year. Definitely better than I imagined it would taste like. Took a couple of days to defrost in the fridge though.

willstarttomorrow · 03/12/2021 20:13

I would buy a huge chicken rather than turkey because in my opinion turkey is not particularly nice. In both cases, but particularly in when dealing when dealing with Turkey which can be particularly dry and flavourless, it is all in the preparation and cooking. Frozen is fine for both. Just google recipes and suggestions of how to roast and add flavour and ensure it is moist. It is not hard to do and does not require anyone to be an amazing cook. Honestly, far better and tastier than buying a ready to roast, pre-stuffed chicken/Turkey at great expense. It will take minutes ti prepare.

hartof · 03/12/2021 20:14

Surely you won't get fresh until the week of Xmas?

Icantremembermyusername · 03/12/2021 20:20

We buy a frozen turkey joint. It's probably all the meat they didn't want last year chopped and shaped in to a tin foil box. It's tasty, cheap, way to cook and slice. Every one loves it and all the side dishes mean no one cares!

mineofuselessinformation · 03/12/2021 20:30

It's no-one else's business whether it's fresh or frozen. As long as it's well-cooked, why would anyone complain?

Lottiethelemming · 03/12/2021 20:33

How long do you need to defrost in the fridge for? I've ordered a large frozen crown and I'm worried I might defrost it too early or too late!

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 03/12/2021 20:33

I always buy frozen. Its been in the freezer a week already.

tarasmalatarocks · 03/12/2021 20:33

A good quality butchers large chicken is much nicer— none of us like turkey- so we stopped pretending
