I can't find a fresh one. I've always bought fresh but can't order one and having a minor fret. I can find a fresh whole one for the price of a small bungalow but cannot pay that. What do you all do?

@TheCanyon

We always buy a turkey joint or crown from iceland, perfectly nice and does the job much easier than a fresh one.
I got one last year from Iceland it was delicious ,and I'm not a turkey fan really .

Mine was delivered from Tesco a week ago, along with my frozen sprouts. Nothing wrong with frozen food for Christmas or any other time.

limitedperiodonly · 04/12/2021 16:27

@polkadotpjs. Defrost it in the fridge for 10 hours a kilo. But you might not have enough room for everything in the fridge so it's okay at this time of year to leave it in an unheated place like a spare room or a garage. Just turn all the radiators off for a day and close the door. I've put mine in the shed. But if you're going to leave it in a shed or garage make sure no hungry creatures can get in - suspend it in a plastic bag from the ceiling if necessary. My friend left hers in the garage and something had a go at it. Cat or rat probably! She didn't tell her family - just covered the damaged leg with extra potatoes and didn't serve it. I didn't say whatever it was had probably been all over it before munching the leg but luckily no one was ill.

limitedperiodonly · 04/12/2021 16:29

I should have said just the radiator in the room not in the whole house. With the door closed it will be cold enough to be safe for meat at this time of year.

polkadotpjs · 04/12/2021 16:37

@limitedperiodonly thanks. I'm starving now for all manner of frozen items. Love a frozen sprout

@polkadotpjs so do I. Someone gave me a vacuum-packed bag of prepared chestnuts last year and they were delicious mixed with sprouts and chopped bacon and onion. I know you don't eat meat so they would be lovely without the bacon too.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 04/12/2021 17:31

We generally buy frozen turkeys (full one) as when we've bought fresh at 3 or 4 times the price, I'm the only one who notices the difference. And then it's not a huge difference, especially with everything else on the plate. Got mine in the freezer.

Lincslady53 · 04/12/2021 17:48

We only have 3 of us for Xmas dinner this year, so have a frozen, pre stuffed turkey joint for less than a fiver. We will have all the trimmings, so I am sure it will be ok.

AlphabetAerobics · 04/12/2021 17:56

Does anyone know of any of the supermarkets are doing a special on 2kg of cocaine? Not really a fan of turkey and prefer to try something different.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 04/12/2021 18:03

Had a large frozen crown for Thanksgiving (from Sainsburys, cooked as per wrapper), it was fine. A little bit more moist and slightly less firm than the turkeys I used to order from the local butcher. I bought it on Monday and kept it in the fridge until Thursday as there was no freezer space.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 04/12/2021 18:13

Last three years had frozen crown I just put bacon over it. Lovely and moist and less hassle.

HarrisMcCoo · 04/12/2021 18:31

I have bought frozen crown this year 👌

Wejustdontknow · 04/12/2021 18:37

I had mine delivered today with my food shop from Asda, £11 for a stuffed turkey crown with a bacon top. I’d never bought frozen before last year but it was so nice I’ve bought the same one again. It serves 8 and cooks straight from frozen in around 3 hours. Dp doesn’t eat turkey and ds8 will only have a slice or two so its only really me and ds15 so we might be eating turkey sandwiches for a while

Funnylittlefloozie · 04/12/2021 18:46

@polkadotpjs could you please enlarge on the parmesan parsnips? Sound delish!

Just wanted to say the turkey crown I got from Iceland is suitable to be cooked from FROZEN! says so on the label. It was the luxury one with the bone in, not sure if this makes a difference. There's instructions on how to cook from defrosted and how to cook from frozen.

polkadotpjs · 04/12/2021 18:53

@Funnylittlefloozie you parboil parsnips then dredge them (while still hot and steaming) in a mix of plain flour, cracked black pepper and grated Parmesan Then roast them in an ox of butter and olive oil for 35-40 mins. They're a delia recipe you should be able to find online somewhere. I'll have a look

Got ours in Aldi 2 weeks ago, it’s in the Christmas freezer drawer (along with prawns, sausagemeat, streaky bacon and mince pies).

www.iceland.co.uk/p/iceland-luxury-the-ultimate-turkey-crown-with-festive-stuffing-parcel-4kg/87985.html#start=1

Link for anyone who cant be bothered spending days to defrost. Had an Iceland one last year and it was perfect and moist, and (dare I say) better than the one DSIL bought from Marks and Spencer, fresh to order, that cost over £100 the year before!

@Lockheart

Buy whatever you like, why would that be unreasonable? It's a frozen turkey crown, not 2kg of cocaine.
🤣🤣🤣
Almostmenopausal · 05/12/2021 10:18

Yeah this is a huuuge veiled dig Hmm

polkadotpjs · 05/12/2021 11:43

@Almostmenopausal if you read the whole thing you'll see it really isn't ! If I'd called the thread "AIBU to ask you about frozen Turkey" I'd not have had this issue.

I have a frozen boned rolled one

I defrost, douse in salt, white pepper and Worcester sauce. Pan fry in lots of butter to brown, then add onion and 1 sliced tomato, then half a bottle of white wine and a teaspoon of sugar. Then stuck in oven with lid on pot for about 2 hrs on low-ish heat.

Then rest and slice it and put slices in gravy.

Cool and store

Then on Christmas Day, I heat it gently through on the hob. Whilst I roast all the veg etc

It’s much nicer than “roast turkey” as not dry, and the gravy is amazing.

polkadotpjs · 05/12/2021 11:53

@MarleneDietrichsSmile that sounds gorgeous. I watched Tom Kerridge do a Turkey breast all spread out, stuffed and cooked in cling film for the first bit then topped. It looked lovely but my butchery skills are zero! The rolling seemed to keep it lovely and moist. Sorry. M word again
