To wear a bikini now I am a mum

I am at Centre Parcs and it's my first time visiting since becoming a mum. I have noticed that about 95% of mums in the swimming pool are wearing a 1 piece swimming costume. I am in the minority as a mum wearing a bikini. Have I broken an unwritten mum rule?

@Hoppinggreen

When I gave birth the first time I was handed a sensible black one piece swimming costume as I left the hospital
I probably should have been given a full length burkini.

Seriously, who gives a flying fuck as long as the waistband doesn't irritate a section scar?

ZaZathecat · 02/12/2021 23:16

I'd guess it's because a one-piece feels more practical when going on water slides etc. Less chance of losing your bottom or top half!

maofteens · 02/12/2021 23:17

Several of my friends wear bikinis - and several are over 50.
Think if it like this: when I went to Butlins the vast majority of the other women had tattoos (I was amazed as I only know one person who has tattoos. Most were roses on the shoulder). I certainly didn't think I had missed an unwritten rule or that I needed to go out and get one to fit in!

Why are people being so mean?!

Nothing wrong with the question. OP it’s a mix of practically (babies pull at your suit and expose the boobs), covering up post-pregnancy bellies / regular food-bellies and caring less about cute bikinis in general.

There’s no un-written rule that you’re breaking but by the looks of this thread you might ruffle some mama-feathers at the pool for being lucky enough to feel comfortable in one Grin

I agree with some pps, a bikini is usually beach wear and a one piece for indoor swimming especially when there water slides, I'd be afraid to lose my bottoms! But honestly it's fine to wear a bikini for indoor swimming, no-one will judge you, just most prefer a one piece for that occasion.

Bikini or tankini every time here. But basically 🤷‍♀️

@2piecetrouble

Thank you for the sensible replies. Certainly not a stealth boast just a new mum struggling to navigate a new world desperately trying to fit in.
If you were genuinely trying to "fit in" you wouldn't need to ask mumsnet which outfit to wear as you'd go with the majority, in this case 95%

You go girl! Wear what you want. I have both.

I’m early 40s, comfortable in a bikini or half a bikini at the beach, l often don’t wear the top. I’d wear the top at Centerparcs though. Have a lovely time.

CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 03/12/2021 06:06

Ignore these replies OP 🤦🏻‍♀️

I felt the same when I went to centerparcs! I have a long body so look like Borat in a one piece. I relaxed after 20 minutes, I really don't think anyone else notice or cares 😁

As an aside, the point about the rapids is VALID! I have now found a one-piece which fits (thanks to a thread on here) x

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 03/12/2021 06:11

I actually think this is a very reasonable question. I’ve always preferred a mid waist bikini to a swimming costume as the cut flatters my figure more and once I lost the baby weight enough to get out of my maternity tankini, that’s what I wore to baby swimming. Most/basically all other mothers were in swimming costumes. I ended up caving and getting one as I didn’t want to be the only one!

granny24 · 03/12/2021 08:22

I’m 74 and about to be a great grandmother. I wear a bikini.

Cocomarine · 03/12/2021 08:24

What the hell kind of bikinis are y’all wearing that you’re afraid of them coming off in the rapids or on the slides? 🧐

I go to Centerparcs once a year (family birthday thing) and we spend 5 hours a day in the pool with much of that going round and round the rapids and onto the slides.

Haven’t lost part of my bikini yet 🤷🏻‍♀️

Play8063 · 03/12/2021 11:05
