What has your energy bill increased to? ☹️🤬

OhPeeQueue · 02/12/2021 07:01

Received an email last night that my energy bill was increasing. Gas-£109 a month. Electric-£79 a month. To think we were only paying around £120 a month a year or two ago, they’ve steadily increased the price.

I was working 2 jobs up until a few months ago and stopped due to stress. Wish I hadn’t now. ☹️.

You just need to follow the instructions on Bulb's site, email them and tell them you want to pay by monthly bank transfer, cheque or cash.
bulb.co.uk/payment-methods/

Yeah we notified them and they said we would get a bill but it was 2 months ago, so I do need to chase. Why did I cancel the DD? Because of all the stories of peoples direct debits tripling! I have set aside a few hundred, but I ought to find out what s happening..

mogsrus · 02/12/2021 17:42

I have said this over & over again. The technology is out there to help lower gas bills & it works. Fit a boiler manager ( google it to see exactly how they work) fitted one to ours years ago. It works; you will never look back

pantsandpringles · 02/12/2021 17:45

How are people not spending so much money?? I watch what I do, live in a 2 bedroom house (technically a flat but more like a bungalow) and spend 200 a month now 😢

IfNot · 02/12/2021 17:53

Just managed to log on to Bulb account (forgot I had one of those!) and apparently our usage last month was £86. So I don't reckon I will be setting up a direct debit again, as if I did they would undoubtedly charge 3 times that. I don't think its necessarily bad to just wait for a bill. I think I would rather be invoiced after the fact than pay in advance, at least you can see what you spent it on.

GetTheFlockOutOfHere · 02/12/2021 17:58

@OhPeeQueue

I don't quite know how to say this, and feel a bit bad about it as some people have atrociously high energy bills, but for our GAS, we pay £35 a month direct debit... (Upped it from £30 to £35 some 8 months ago as we were £17 in the red,) and when I sent our reading through 2 days ago, we were £43 in credit.

We are quite frugal, and never have the heating on higher than 18, even in winter, and we have a boiler (and pump) that are less than 10 years old. We live in a modest sized (not tiny, not huge) 3 bed bungalow, so the heat doesn't fly through the roof. But we are in quite a bit (I work from home, and DH works 4 days a week.)

So I am a little surprised that our gas bill (cooker and heating) is slightly under £35 a month, and I am gobsmacked at the gas bills on here running into the £150 a month region. Our electric is on a £50 direct debit a month by the way, and we are currently £39 in credit...

All I can think of (with some of the people going from £45 a month to £150 or more,) is that they switched to a new energy company who enticed them with an artificial/misleading low offer, to get them to change, and their energy company has shut down, and their new energy company has adjusted them to what their monthly payment should be.

We have been with British Gas for several decades, and as I say, we pay less than £85 for both gas and electric combined.

Caspianberg · 02/12/2021 18:00

A fortune. I think electric was €120 and gone up to €145.
No gas here
Oil heating bill is around €3000

Capricornqueen86 · 02/12/2021 18:02

£80 per month for gas and electric, it's going up to £185 from jan. I'm with octopus. I don't know if I'll get a better deal else where.

poshme · 02/12/2021 18:04

@GetTheFlockOutOfHere I slightly agree.

Our price was 17.5p per kWh and it's now gone up to 20.1p per kWh (octopus)

I've built up some credit over the summer, and have now increased our DD up to £70 (from £65). By my calculations that will cover us for the time being.

Was everyone else just on much lower kWh prices before?

dementedpixie · 02/12/2021 18:20

My fixed rate ends in January with Octopus so I'm slightly scared at what the SVR price will be.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 02/12/2021 18:25

With GNE, I was paying 13.880 p/kWh for electric (17.310 p/day standing charge) and 2.220 p/kWh for gas (19.830 p/day standing charge).

My current EDF rates (locked in until Aug '23) are 20.24 p/kWh for electric (22.39 p/day SC) and 3.73 p/kWh for gas (25.33 p/day SC).

Have you checked the comparison sites? If you can find a better deal than the SVR you are the only one who can Smile

Do remember that your monthly DD is neither you rate or how much you use, just a guesstimate by your supplier.

nannybeach · 02/12/2021 18:32

Refixed for 24 months in July with Octopus.DD went from £100 to £130. There are no deals at the moment. Over 20 energy providers have gone bust this year. Because of the government price ceiling, the smaller companies paid more for the fuel than they were allowed to charge. I've got a few years old boiler, cavity wall insulation, thick loft insulation, new double or triple A rated windows. Led lights, never left on in an empty room.tiny table lamp with 11w bulb while watching TV. Just decided on solar panels. Just my pension,DH had to stop working last year, owing to injury, not pension age. Small open plan 2 bed bungalow

nannybeach · 02/12/2021 18:35

We've got economy 7,so washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer if I have to use it,goes on at cheap rate

teenagetantrums · 02/12/2021 18:43

We are fixed rate till April pay £47 a month for gas and electric. 2 bedroom flat.
However l have increased our direct debit even though we are in credit as l expect it will double next April when fix ends.

nannybeach · 02/12/2021 18:46

What is a "boiler manager" I put it in online, just came up with employment jobs working with boilers

mogsrus · 02/12/2021 18:48

Ok Boiler manager device. Should do it

mogsrus · 02/12/2021 18:49

Boiler Energy manager. Will definitely do it

Bunchymcbunchface · 02/12/2021 18:51

From £148 a month to £226 a month for electric.
They’ve asked for 3 readings so far this year
First two said we were in credit by over £600 last one said we owe them £400 so they are increasing the DD

elbea · 02/12/2021 18:57

We must be on a very low rate because we never seem to go above £60/70 for gas and electric each month on our four bed semi! Some of these bills sound huge.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 02/12/2021 19:03

Your rate is on your bill.
MrsGeoWolf · 02/12/2021 19:09

Mine has went from £150 per month to £200 they say am going to go back to £150 next September, we live in a detached 4 bedroom with 6 of us living here. When I first moved in 6 years ago I paid 80 in summer and 120 in winter and was always in credit. Now always in debt even with a new boiler that was installed 2 years ago.

You're probably still on a fixed tariff. When it ends you will pay more
Dreamstate · 02/12/2021 19:31

Moved on svr today. I'm heading back into the office now as much as I can. I'm not getting a payrise or a bonus this year so im not going to be heating my house or using my electricity for work purposes at home anymore esp with the energy prices now a days. They have offices so ill be using them.

LOL. Grin

Never heard of it either!

Makingnumber2 · 02/12/2021 19:45

We’ve gone from 60.50pm to £104. That’s with British Gas. We didn’t turn heating on until mid November this year- I’m working from home and am pretty cold during the day but am just sucking it up rather than turning heating on.
