Why would you not want a heated blanket?

I live with another person and they have been working from home all day. The heating has been turned up to 23/25 degrees (I can see from the app). I didn’t think it was partially cold today - between 8-10 degrees but I have been told my spare room can get cold.

The thermometer is usually kept in her room but it was in the living room for a few weeks (she was away, didn’t want it kept in her room).

As the radiators were turned down low the temperature didn’t increase in the living room and as a result her bedroom radiator has been on full power all day (there is no tmv).

I have told her to put the thermostat back in her room (third time of asking, so this time it was

outside her room and told h

I feel so smug LOL. My weather station shows 6 degrees outside, and an unbelievable 20.6 degrees inside. There is no heating on anywhere since about 9oc last night. I cannot believe it really, as it is only recently that I started to check.

The thermometer for the weather station is in a little used room, so it is not influenced by cooking, ovens or the like. It does however have the benefit of sun through large double glazed windows, when the sun shines!

So far not felt the need at all to turn on any form of heating, but as soon as I feel cooler, on it goes for as long as I want.

Personally if I had to have a lodger If be grateful to find one that didn't cook so the heating wouldn't bother me so much.

@Swanfairydust

Drip feed….

Last winter she said it was cold in her room. I know the radiators are oversized, so I got the TMV removed (now a normal on/off).

I also got her the heated blanket because it’s cheaper to heat the bed instead of the whole house/it’s quicker to get warm at night etc. Plus can use a plug timer etc. Im sure the electric used for that is a lot cheaper than gas for the bedroom all night?

Some people feel the cold more than others. Heating the bed makes it even more unpleasant getting out of it in to a cold room than if you didn't heat the bed. I need air temperature to be warm or even with electric blanket my nose tip would be cold and I'd be shivering going to the loo etc. I couldn't sit and work in a cold room either

Fair enough 👍

What’s the cooking concern?

The heating is on.

Haha well don't worry i doubt she will be able to stand living with you much longer and this will resolve itself!

Butterfly44 · 04/12/2021 20:51

I wfh and don't have heating on all day at all. What I do have is a heated throw that I use when working. It's lovely and keeps me warm. And at bedtime I've a heated electric blanket. Wouldn't be without either.

Yeah @Sciurus83 I’m sure if it was you you’d be so happy to pay the extra high heating bill..

SmellyOldOwls · 04/12/2021 23:16

She must feel so uncomfortable having you check up on her in the app during the day, asking her constantly to put thermometers in her room and buying her electric blanket in the hope she doesn't put the heat on Confused

@Meowenstein

Did you miss this bit?

She’s offered to pay more for the bills

AlwaysLatte · 05/12/2021 09:26

I think it would be reasonable to set a limit at 20, which is plenty warm enough. Can you not get some kind of tamper proof thermostat?

AlwaysLatte · 05/12/2021 09:26

Or tamper proof thermostatic valves for the radiators.

ImInStealthMode · 05/12/2021 09:36

Not much to add here aside from thanking my lucky stars that back when I was a lodger none of my landlords were anywhere near as entitled and unhinged as our OP is making herself out to be.

I did once have a dispute about heating costs, I like to be warm so I just paid more. End of issue, everyone's happy.

As you so obviously resent having to have a lodger OP perhaps you should ask the Heated Blanket Marketing Board for a pay-rise instead?

Hmm
MintyCedric · 05/12/2021 09:36

I think you should give her notice.

You obviously are unable to respect her wishes or her privacy and the situation is clearly causing you stress.

Best for both of you if she moves on and you either manage without a lodger or find someone you're more compatible with (and learn to respect their privacy).

Darbs76 · 05/12/2021 09:38

My heating is set to come on when temp drops under 21 5-8am, 5-9pm, and under 19 rest of the time. We have a log burner. I heat the whole house, don’t turn off any radiators, it would be freezing in those rooms and unpleasant. Let her pay more and be warm, what’s the problem?

Rollmopsrule · 05/12/2021 09:48

I would find her really annoying as well op. Swaning round in shorts and t-shirt while cranking up the heating. She really doesn't sound very bright at all. It's not just the case of money it would be the waste of energy that would annoy me more. It sounds like she should be paying far more than an extra £10 a week. If you don't need the money I'd just get rid of her so you can live the way you want to in your house.

I'm genuinely curious about this, and was hoping someone else would ask. Why did you quote the post (copied below) by @Sciurus83 and follow it with

"Stand*" ?

"Haha well don't worry i doubt she will be able to stand living with you much longer and this will resolve itself!"

AppleJane · 07/12/2021 10:31

@FluffyBooBoo maybe it's because the lodger doesn't do much 'standing'. Perhaps she spends most the time in her bed or on her arse watching tv. It's not spent cleaning or cooking.

Ah ok. That makes some kind of sense. The way it's written looks like it's a correction rather than a comment on the lodger, which is why I couldn't get my head around it.

Thanks.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 10/12/2021 12:08

Please get over the heated blanket love. I would no more want one than I would itchy mohair thermals

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 10/12/2021 12:12

Poor lodger

DreamTheMoors · 16/12/2021 03:15

I cannot stand the heat. I leave it off in the winter and I’m usually miserable in the summer. If it weren’t for central air conditioning where I live, I think I’d perish.

If the only way your roommate/lodger will mend her ways is punitively, then you’ll have to figure out an arrangement to make that work.

Because cranking the heat way up and then throwing on shorts & a tee is ridiculous - particularly when they’re not paying the bills.
