Posting here for traffic. What tog duvet would you get for winter (for adults) 13.5 or 15?

10.5 tog with a lovely Macy's bedspread over the top keeps us snug in the winter

purpleme12 · 29/11/2021 23:25

Depends how cold the house is really
15 is very toasty, too toasty for many houses
Our house is 9 when I got home from work today so I'm changing to 15 tog now I think!

We have an all-seasons one, which Is two separate duvets, which can be clipped together when needed. One is 4.5 tog (summer) , one is 9.5 tog (most of year), two together are13 tog (3-4 weeks of year max). 10 should be fine.

13.5 tog (ish) wool duvet. I have a patchwork blanket and a merino wool blanket on top or that Blush I also sleep with pjs and socks on...
There's about 2 weeks a year when I don't have the duvet on and use a blanket and sheet instead

ilovesooty · 30/11/2021 01:03

I've abandoned duvets and have a washable reversible 4.5 tog comforter on the bed now.

Franca123 · 30/11/2021 07:20

We have the heating off in bedrooms and use 13.5 in winter plus woolie blankets. Really surprised people can sleep with 4.5 in winter as that's what we use in summer. We would perish in our bedroom with 4.5. But then our bedroom was just 13 degrees last night.

CecilyP · 30/11/2021 07:27

I use a 10.5 tog for the winter - north of Scotland. Unless you have no heating, it is plenty warm enough.

CecilyP · 30/11/2021 07:29

I changed from 4.5 a couple of weeks ago when it wasn’t really needed. I’m definitely grateful for the 10.5 now!

Tumbleweed101 · 30/11/2021 07:29

Mine is 10.5 tog. It’s just right now it has got cold but was too hot before. I don’t have heating on at night in my bedroom and window open most of the year although it’s currently closed
the last few weeks since it cooled down.

Cobiemakesmesmulder · 30/11/2021 09:15

13 on our bed, 15 on the spare bed - the spare room is much colder. I also have a blanket in our room. I find I need more covers sleeping alone than with someone and recently have had both duvets on the bed!

Cobiemakesmesmulder · 30/11/2021 09:16

I never have the heating on at night. I don't like it on even if I'm freezing!

Babdoc · 30/11/2021 10:32

4.5 most of the year, with a blanket thrown loosely over in early spring/late autumn.
For the coldest 3 months I switch to a 13.5.
I live in Scotland, on the edge of the highlands, and last winter we reached minus 18C. My heating is off between 10pm and 7am, as I find it too drying and uncomfortable if on overnight.

Malacath · 30/11/2021 10:43

Type of filling is important too. We have a synthetic 4.5 tog duvet for spring and the start of autumn. We use a sheet only in the hottest part of summer.
It's now getting colder and we switched to a 4.5 tog down duvet which is usually enough for the winter. We have a 9 tog down duvet that can be attached to it, but the 9 tog is usually too hot already, let alone 13.5! Although we are now sleeping with the window slightly open so may need to try the thicker one again. We have a brilliant double control heated under blanket though, which helps a lot!

QuinionsRainbow · 30/11/2021 14:34

Generally 4.5 tog, reducing tn summer to a single sheet + light cellular blanket (and often just the sheet) and occasionally increasing in winter to 9.5 tog. Window open to greater or lesser extent, depending on season

amusedbush · 30/11/2021 15:30

I’m in Glasgow and I have 10.5 in the winter and 4.5 in the summer. I have the window open pretty much all year round but on the odd night that it’s bitterly cold, I can put my summer duvet on top of the winter one.

DH keeps his bedroom like a furnace and he always complains that mine is freezing but I like the fresh air on my face while my body is wrapped up warm Grin

HardbackWriter · 30/11/2021 15:39

We recently switched from a double to a king and bought a 15 tog when we bought the new king sized duvet. It. Is. Bliss.

FluffyRabbitGal · 30/11/2021 19:47

I have a 4.5 tog which is only taken off in winter, when I switch it to a 10.5 tog. I do have a window open all year round though as I find it oppressive if it’s too hot.
