Posting here for traffic. What tog duvet would you get for winter (for adults) 13.5 or 15?

OP posts:
idontlikealdi · 29/11/2021 15:21

I've just bought a new 10.5, so comfy but both of us were out of the duvet last night and it was bloody freezing. Heating is off overnight.

idontlikealdi · 29/11/2021 15:22

As in freezing outside!

Pixiedust1234 · 29/11/2021 15:26

Uh oh....I have 13.5 tog duvet and right now I am using three duvets just to keep warm in this weather, including pj's and bedrock Shock

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/11/2021 15:29

I have 13.5

I didn’t know you could get 15!

I live in SE England, and don’t like to have the heating on late in the evening / at night

I have the 13.5 almost all year, save for unusually hot nights

House is 1930s so not one of those new buildings hot boxes

Notgoingonholiday · 29/11/2021 15:32

16.5 tog and we're on the South Coast. Obviously have a different one for summer.

Wafflesnsniffles · 29/11/2021 15:37

I have a 1 tog and use it all year round. In the summer its often too hot for anything at all........ then gradually the 1 tog duvet, then I add a blanket....... then another etc until Winter arrives and Ive ended up with 1 tog duvet and 4-6 blankets on top. Reducing the blankets again until spring and repeat.
I LOVE the heavy/high pressure feeling of lots of blankets so this works brilliantly for me. A heavy duvet always means empty and chilly spaces and nowhere near as much pressure as I want.

BonnesVacances · 29/11/2021 15:38

10.5 tog goose down here. It works for us all year round.

2bazookas · 29/11/2021 15:43

we sleep with the windows open and heating off all year round. Three different duvets according to season.

13.5 tog. duvet in winter

a cooler wool duvet in spring/ autumn, probably 9 tog?

We have a very light 4 tog duvet for use in hot weather.

LuaDipa · 29/11/2021 15:44

We’re Yorkshire and use 10.5 tog for winter, 4.5 for summer. I can’t have heating on in the bedroom and keep my windows open.

AliMonkey · 29/11/2021 15:44

I have 4.5 all year except in heat of summer when I have a sheet or nothing. DH has 4.5 summer, 9 in winter. (We have one of those split tog duvets so his side is 9, mine 4.5.). Only time I’ve gone up to 9 is when our heating broke so I assume if you’re talking 15 you’re in a house with no heating? Having said that we’ve stayed in plenty of cottages where they provide 10 or 13 in summer and I’ve always wondered if they were just their own rejects. Now we always either ask in advance or just take our own.

soughsigh · 29/11/2021 15:48

Depends on how warm your house is and how warm you like to be. We live in Scotland but have a 4 tog duvet all year round, we have a modern house and it rarely drops below 16 degrees overnight (and we don't have the heating on). If it's really cold, I use a blanket and put warmer pyjamas on.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/11/2021 15:49

I also wonder about the bedding in holiday accommodation @AliMonkey, as it is always far too hot, but it sounds like it would suit many on this thread.

@Wafflesnsniffles, we also have a 1 tog quilt, but I lied and said it was a 4.5 because I didn't want to be accused of competitive undertogging.

AutumnAnn · 29/11/2021 15:50

13.5 with a couple of thick blankets on top and usually a couple of hot water bottles

GetTheFlockOutOfHere · 29/11/2021 15:50

13.5 here. Warm enough for me. Smile

Oakdog · 29/11/2021 15:53

10.5 tog for main King size duvet, then an extra 4.5 single just on my side, which is easy to get rid of if too hot!

grapewine · 29/11/2021 16:03

13.5. Tried 15 but it was too warm.

DappledThings · 29/11/2021 16:04

10.5 year round. Very occasionally an extra blanket but only really need that if it's been freezing outside for more than a few days.

When it's hot I just go without.

PurpleNebula84 · 29/11/2021 16:11

It all depends if you have your heating on/set to come on at a certain temp overnight - if you do, it's pretty pointless switching your duvet to a winter one.
I have a 10 tog duvet and use that all year.

Kite22 · 29/11/2021 16:16

Anther who didn't realise they went higher than 13.5tog

Our double is 4.5 - which is enough for dh, and then I have a single on top of that.... not 100% sure as it is very old, but I can't imaging it being more than 4.5 either.

SofiaMichelle · 29/11/2021 16:18

@Rubybetsie

20 tog...don't have heating on in our bedroom and it's just about comfortable.
20?! Oh my word.

I'd end up with hyperthermia!

We use 10.5 all year, other than changing to 4.5 if it's extremely hot.

dementedpixie · 29/11/2021 16:31

We don't have heating on at night either and use 10.5tog during colder months and 4.5tog in summer. I knew you got 15tog; didn't know you got 20tog. I'd melt!

Tayegete · 29/11/2021 16:37

We’ve just bought a 4.5 tog and added it to our 10.5 tog after we were both freezing on the night of Storm Arwen. It’s fantastic - it will be on until at least April.

AdmiralCain · 29/11/2021 16:41

15 tog 100% pure Siberian down. I don't mess about.

Scrunchies · 29/11/2021 16:52

Genuinely try a hot water bottle. Life changing if you’re cold.

Mabelface · 29/11/2021 16:59

4.5 in summer, 13.5 in spring and autumn then a full on 15 for winter. I don't have the radiator on in my room, so it's cosy.
