To ask how many of you have a velvetiser and if it's really as good as it's made out

I covet one but I am a sucker for hype.

Bsmirched · 28/11/2021 14:01

We've just got one and I do love it very much! We subscribed to a pack of sachets once a month which meant we got the velvetiser half price.
I also love the fact that other drinks needing hot milk , like Horlicks are now a doddle, too. It's very easy to clean as well.

TheJakeWay · 28/11/2021 14:02

I can't help you because I haven't got one, but I'd also love to know if it's worth it and why it's better than a saucepan on the hob or a Pyrex jug in the microwave because I'm also a bit of a suckered for hype!

Left · 28/11/2021 14:05

I’ve been wondering exactly the same Grin

Glugglejug · 28/11/2021 14:06

I really like mine, and we use it a lot in winter. You will get a lot of people on mumsnet saying hotel chocolat is ‘the new Thornton’s’ (lol) and tastes crap, though. I like their chocolate though and think the velvetiser makes a much smoother hot chocolate than just using their sachets in a pan with milk.

It is also simple to use and easy to clean. I didn’t think £100 or whatever it was when I bought one was too much for something we use frequently.

Outlyingtrout · 28/11/2021 14:06

I'm very tempted (probably because I'm a sucker for a lovely bit of marketing and a nice looking kitchen gadget) but I'm having a hard time understanding why the velvetiser is preferable to a pan of milk on the hob with some chocolate and a bit of sugar whizzed in using the immersion blender. I'd also be able to make multiple cups at once in the pan.

Skips123 · 28/11/2021 14:07

If you have a Nespresso you can use the aeroccino or other places (Aldi/Asda) sell milk frothers for around £20 which again do the same thing. They just don't look as nice as the velvetiser of course!

Athena101 · 28/11/2021 14:07

I can really recommend it. I haven't been to a café for hot chocolate since I bought it as it's the best hot chocolate I've had. Some of the flavours are a bit odd but the Classic is delicious. So easy to clean and so much quicker than boiling milk on an electric hob. Calorific though, I have to limit myself to a couple a week! My kids love it for a treat.

StartingGrid · 28/11/2021 14:09

I have one, and love it! Far less effort than a hob etc, and the variety of flavours is great.

SENmummy73848 · 28/11/2021 14:10

I really enjoyed it once I first got it but now hardly use it - firstly because it’s expensive if you’re having a sachet of hot chocolate every single day (£13 I think for a box which doesn’t go very far) and secondly because I find it a pain to clean - there’s no way you can just give it a quick rinse out because the chocolate gets wedged in all the little spaces so you need to wash each parts individually (unless you’re happy having leftover chocolate in your next drink). I got mine as a present but I think I would be disappointed if I had actually paid with my own money x

Theluggage15 · 28/11/2021 14:12

I love mine, had it ages. Makes lovely smooth chocolate and no faff. We use it loads so definitely worth the money. Would recommend!

Honeyroar · 28/11/2021 14:12

You could just buy a coffee machine like this for a little more money- then you’d be able to have fantastic hot chocolates and coffees..

Eeeeeps · 28/11/2021 14:15

I love mine; an absolute luxury but worth it for me. The hot chocolate is incredible

ChessieFL · 28/11/2021 14:15

Love ours, makes much smoother hot chocolate than just doing it in a pan. Cleaning is really easy, just put some water in washing up liquid in and run it through its cycle. The only downside is that you can only make one drink at a time - not too much of a pain for us as there’s only 2 of us who use it but would be annoying for a larger family. I also like it because DD can use it on her own whereas I would be less happy with her using a pan on the hob.

This is interesting as we have an aeroccino which I use to make the kids hot chocolate every morning (just a teaspoon of good chocolate though rather than a huge sachet). I'm tempted by the velvetiser as you put the chocolate in it which doesn't work in the aeroccino - I have to whisk it with the first bit of warm milk separately. And wondering if it makes a better velvety chocolate than lots of frothed babyccino milk on top. But £90???
Sparklingbrook · 28/11/2021 14:16

I thought I wanted one, but I have form for buying kitchen gadgets, using them all the time for a week then into the cupboard they go. )Ice cream maker. Soda Stream, soup maker etc)
And while I like a hot chocolate to a point I'd have to drink at least two a day to justify the cost.

MoonCowbag · 28/11/2021 14:19

What does it do that is "special"?

I make hot chocolate by mixing cocoa, milk, and sugar in my nutribullet/jug blender. Then heat it either in a pan or microwave it. It makes wonderfully smooth hot chocolate and is super easy. But I am still wondering if I need one of these contraptions in my life...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/11/2021 14:20

It’s wonderful.

billy1966 · 28/11/2021 14:23

I use my aeroccino and a teaspoon of chocolate spead like nuttella, topped with marshmallows. It goes down well and the aeroccino is easy to clean.

NeverTheHootenanny · 28/11/2021 14:25

Their adverts have been following me around social media for months so I’ve finally succumbed and told DH that’s what I want for Christmas.

Hoping it’s actually as good as it looks and I’m not just a sucker for attractive marketing.

Peach01 · 28/11/2021 14:26

A mumsnet product test has been done on this. Don't know how to share it. Think it came out good.

RiverSkater · 28/11/2021 14:30

I can't imagine what it can do that a sauce whisk can't?

ImInStealthMode · 28/11/2021 14:30

I was looking at them in Hotel Choclat today, although I didn't succumb! Looking at the sachets, it's just ground up chocolate isn't it? Couldn't you save a bit on the HC prices by grating any old solid chocolate bar?

DukkaDukka · 28/11/2021 14:34

I bought a milk frother instead as it’s only the DC that drink hot chocolate.

CarlaH · 28/11/2021 14:38

So are they easy to clean or not. Seems to be some difference of opinion here.

If it isn't an easy clean then I am not interested.

ChannelLightVessel · 28/11/2021 14:39

I looked at getting one for DM last year, but decided in the end to get her a milk frother, which she uses with the Hotel Chocolat sachets. She’s very happy with it, but of course maybe she’d have been even happier with a Velvetiser…
