To be hurt by this prank

I'm in a tough spot at the moment and am being thrown out of my home and could do with extra funds so I entered a phone competition to win a lot of money. They will randomly call someone and you have to say a phrase to win the money (you've probably heard this competition if you listen to the radio in the UK). It came to the time where they were going to call the person and my phone starts ringing from a withheld number, obviously I answer and the phone is quiet for a minute... Then I see my friend laughing to himself, it was him that called me. He's aware of my situation and knows I'm struggling so I was hurt that he'd do that.

I too do the competitions listed on mse. I've won stuff too. Sadly nothing this big but I try still. And I would not be happy if someone prank called me.

That's shit because of your situation. He probably doesn't mean anything by it and it literally is just a prank. It's thoughtless definitely but I'm certain he didn't mean to be cruel

Thats a nasty thing to do. Irrespective of his intentions, I can't imagine anyone that lacking in sensitivity would make a good friend.

When the newspapers ran competitions like this, my son joked that we'd won.
It would have been £250,000!
The momentary lightheadedness followed by the bump of disappointment.
Oh well, son knew he was wrong to do that, but he was a kid..
a friend is not a friend.. it's a really spiteful thing to have done.
As others have said, he is no friend.

My DB would absolutely do this. There was someone we know who was really struggling - very little money to put in the electricity meter etc - and she was gifted with a fake winning scratchcard. My DB thought this was hilarious .

OP that's a really nasty prank your so called friend pulled. Are they usually this cruel or is it a one off where he has completely put his foot in it?

Oh this made my stomach drop a little, I can totally imagine the relief and then the crash back to reality. That's really sad, your poor friend.

Me too, the ‘pranksters’ are usually dickheads who brush any and everything away as ‘banter’ 🙄

There's never anything 'funny' in making another person feel foolish, sad, or disappointed. I hate pranks of any kind. After all "a joke is only funny if everyone is laughing" and the intended target is very rarely laughing.
