Fray Bentos impossible to open?

Guacamole001 · 24/11/2021 16:26

I have been trying to open a tin of Fray Bentos steak and onion. My trusty tin openers have both been used. They manage to open everything else but Fray Bentos it just won't budge.

I had to throw it away now as bits of the tin were open and no knife went through which I have tried in the past.

How does anybody open up the blighters? I was looking forward to my customary one Fray Bentos per winter season!

I like the crust. Oh well. Saved a few hundred calories tonight.

Yes, you need an old-fashioned basic tin opener. Magi-can and the like will not work.

RemorselessNorsemen · 24/11/2021 19:59

Never mind Fray Bentos, I can't believe we live in a world where we can send William Shatner into space, but still have to use a fucking useless key to half open a tin of corned beef.

YABU to eat a canned pie

Jacopo · 25/11/2021 13:47

I am reliably informed that they intend to reinforce the Chernobyl containment area with many layers of Fray Bentos tinned pies.

Gilmoregale · 25/11/2021 13:47

I complained about their tins about a year or so ago. I was having a nostalgia day (they were often the centrepiece of our Sunday lunch growing up.) They suggested we buy an Oxo Good Grips tin opener. (Which has been life changing in many ways, but I'm still cross that our ordinary Culinaire, fairly decent openers, weren't strong enough to get into the tank, sorry, pie tin.)

They did send me some vouchers though. (I really was cross.)

Evasmissingletter · 25/11/2021 14:01
. Try this !
limitedperiodonly · 25/11/2021 14:06

You need the army issue tin opener I inherited from my dad. It has a point to stab with and then you lever it round clockwise. It opens anything and could double as a close combat weapon.

But it only works if you're righthanded. My left handed husband is helpless with it.

daisyjgrey · 25/11/2021 14:13

The Brabantia ones do it.

hamstersarse · 25/11/2021 14:14

It's a sign you shouldn't eat that horse shit toxic waste

ODFOgrinch · 25/11/2021 14:17

Following the principle that we will try anything we buy for the food bank, we did a Frey bentos tasting one evening.
Although the meat ones weren't comparable to a fresh meat pie, they weren't worse than a tinned stew.

But: the vegetable curry pie and the cheese any onion pies were delicious.
And all of them opened without issue using the electric tin opener I received as a wedding present in the late 80s.

Also! The meat pudding has a ring pull and microwaves in minutes: dirty and no waiting!

There's another one @depremesnil
gogohm · 25/11/2021 14:23

You have to open it under the lip, turn the opener around, it's the sand for lots of tins now. I personally don't buy them but late great grandparents were fans

The crust is Ok but the underneath “pastry” is so nasty, slimy and flabby the whole notion of eating a Fray Bentos pie puts me off. And it is probably horsemeat too….

NotMyCat · 25/11/2021 14:40

Cheese and onion one is lovely. Bit of frozen mash and beans and it's a cupboard tea!
I have one actually from the government box I got shielding

I managed to fully open a tin of corned beef with the key the other day, I felt like the tin should produce a gold medal or something

Few and far between but some have ring pulls. I mean they snap off as you pull them but the thought was there...

The soft bit of pastry is the best bit. I loved a Fray Bentos pie with mashed potatoes, peas and brown sauce.

And there is nothing wrong with eating horse meat as long as the animal has not been treated with veterinary drugs intended for pets as many horses in the UK are.

Fray Bentos was named for the port in Uruguay which along with Argentina is famous for its beef. Those pies aren't going to contain premium beef but will be fit for human consumption so stop being so snobby.

Seconded!

thetittifer · 25/11/2021 17:07

@Lovelymincepies

They are the dirtiest of pies, I see them in the range and think I should get one but then remember how bloody hard they are to open.

My son is like 'yuk, a pie in a tin' tried explaining that they are great, so dirty and lovely and you shouldn't really eat them as probably got horse meat in but they taste so good!

This made me snort!

And yes YABU for buying Fray Bentos pies

0palescent · 25/11/2021 17:16

I cant help on how you open the buggers, my only Fray Bentos experience was second hand. My ex was having one, and I was eagerly awaiting the grand opening. I tell you, I couldn't believe the colour and texture of that pastry! Greige! I don't know what to was expecting, it's a pie in a tin FFS Grin

My tin opener opens them easy but it's from 1990!!

MissVantaBlack · 05/02/2023 20:13

Reader, I opened one! With a Culinare MagiCan tin opener. Would you like to know the secret?

You attach the tin opener in the usual way, but then turn the tin and the tin opener upside down. This allows you to tilt the tin opener up slightly, so the cutting wheel presses more closely against the slanting side of the tin, and therefore cuts more deeply through the metal, thus opening it.

Enjoy! 😊

RobertaFirmino · 05/02/2023 20:39

What's actually wrong with horse meat? I've never eaten it but providing it complies with human consumption standards, how is eating a horse any different from eating a cow or a pig?
