Brother in law shooting grey squirrels

NettleMania · 23/11/2021 22:05

Is this an okay thing to do? AIBU to have a go if it's in his own garden?

I'm a bit conflicted as I have a live and let live attitude towards animals, but BIL swears it's not illegal to shoot them, that they're vermin and have chased off all our native red squirrels and that they're eating all the food he puts out for the birds.

He has tried other ways to get rid of them, but they are determined. My DS just shrugs and carries on with her knitting!

@LittleDandelionClock

I would say what I think of him, and anyone supporting him, but I'd be banned from here.
This with bells on. Wishing thar shot their leg off instead is not the only thing I wish they'd shoot
K4fkaesque · 24/11/2021 22:55

@TabithaTumbler

So killing squirrels is evil but you wanting to shoot someone’s leg off is fine

Not anyone's leg, just the murdering twats who kill wildlife. HTH.

Yup, the OP's BIL is definitely the psycho around here...
ThereAreSomeNuttersAbout · 25/11/2021 10:38

Killing animals isn’t murder.
Would people who claim that it is also say that packing humans into cattle trucks and transporting them to an industrialised death is the same as putting cattle into cattle trucks and transporting them to an industrialised death?

Have some humanity. Have some sense of proportion.

PlanDeRaccordement · 25/11/2021 10:40

@Pigeoninthehouse

And you don’t have a strong view? Your view is stronger than mine as you think no one should ever kill a squirrel for any reason. Mine is more moderate and is of the view that a person can kill a squirrel if there is a valid reason such as protecting a vulnerable native species. You're not really repsonding to my query about why there appears to be so many people on mumsnet that appear to be happy to
  1. kill innocent wildlife
  2. are suggesting they have an aim that would rival Billy the Kid, when it comes to dispatching squirrels.
If this were Guns and ammo, then I would understand, but its a parenting site with a majority female demographic. I'm guessing that the closest that some have got to a gun on here is reading about it on Wikepedia and they're not as hard as they crack on.
Women are statistically better shots than men. That’s why the elite snipers of most armed forces in the world are actually women. Not men.

And Billy the Kid didn’t have exceptional aim, he was a fast draw in duels. It’s not hard to aim at a human standing still twenty paces away.

The BIL isnt “killing innocent wildlife” he’s culling an invasive species in accordance with good wildlife conservation practices.

Nothing should be packed into a truck and killed. Absolutely nothing. Human or animal. The world would be a much better place without people.
PlanDeRaccordement · 25/11/2021 10:58

The world would be a much better place without people.

No it wouldn’t. I suggest you watch some national geographic videos on predators hunting prey. See crocs chomping on bambi might open your eyes a bit. It’s a dog eat dog world, always has been. Was so before humans and will be after.

Yes it bloody would. We are destroying the planet. We don't just take what we need we take fucking everything and we can't even leave a squirrel alone ffs. The world would heal

I’m a very good shot, but I’d like to see evidence to back up this claim.

Oh, the hubris, we can’t destroy the planet.
Even if it warmed 2.5C per the climate apocalypse people. The planet would still be here, and there would still be life teeming about on most of it.

How wonderful, that mumsnet appears to be a safe place for all these top female snipers to share their abhorent views on killing innocent wildlife.
Wonder why this 'normal' practice isn't discussed more openly and why in my 40 + years on this planet I have never encountered a crack shot granny,
I used to deliver firearms for a living and about a third of all the air rifles we sold were to elderly ladies who used them to control vermin on their property.

Or anyone else that shares your opinion on killing innocent animals. Strange one that.

Pheasantlysurprised · 25/11/2021 11:51

sad little man syndrome.
look at my masculinity.
fuck the planet, fuck anything that isnt human.
typically utterly shit in bed but some asshole will always breed with them.

Chinese snipers in video. Other than that google is your friend. Kurds used female snipers vs ISIS. ISIS even had female snipers as well. Russia has had elite snipers since Red Army days of WWII..Lady Death the most famous with over 300 kills against the Nazis. Israel.
France. Spain, also since WWII.

You have only to look at Olympics to see it is a sport where women regularly outperform the men.

If you live in U.K., it is unsurprising you have lived such a sheltered life with no exposure to guns. I know you’re trying to be sarcastic and give impression that the stereotype of women, mothers especially, never handling guns is true.

What is sad is that you are so intolerant of other points of view calling them “abhorrent”. I truly think you have only a surface level understanding of what it takes to actually sustain a wildlife preserve or work on the conservation of native species and wildernesses. It’s not a Disney film from your childhood.

justasking111 · 25/11/2021 12:12

Look townies and rural folks rarely agree. In the cities there are licensed gun holders you can contact whenever you have an urban fox problem, ditto other vermin. It's just not publicised because of trolling and threats. During the war in cities roof rabbit was eaten.. no-one had the vapours over that

DdraigGoch · 25/11/2021 12:20

@HoardingSamphireSaurus

It's not fine at all. God this is exactly what is wrong with the world. People disgust me. I am so glad I am raising my kids to cherish every living being and not put some above others.

Utterly vegan? Check every purchase, insurers, pension pots, etc?

Out of interest, what do insurers do that's unvegan? The last time I received a policy statement it wasn't printed on vellum or anything.
FangsForTheMemory · 25/11/2021 12:25

Grey squirrels are classed as vermin and it's legal to shoot them. The grey/red squirrel issue is one of competition for habitat and food, as I understand it. Reds are smaller.

K4fkaesque · 25/11/2021 12:29

Right, this sounds like a plan.

Sheltered life ?
Where did you grow the the Bronx ?
I'm not seeing much in depth knowledge of conservation coming from your direction, just plenty of stuff 10 mins on wiki would tell me.

PlanDeRaccordement · 25/11/2021 12:58

I don’t think humans will go extinct. But even if we do, life won’t go extinct ergo the planet won’t be destroyed. When dinosaurs were roaming about, the CO2 was 5x higher than it is now, and the planet was up to 10C warmer than now. There were no polar ice caps at all and sea levels were 100m higher. There are many species still about....alligators, sharks...that were around then. So no, we can’t destroy the planet.

On the day we build a Death Star type space based laser or plasma weapon, I will retract my statement.

All that shows is that female snipers exist, which I wasn’t doubting, and asking me to Google is a cop out.

200 metres is nothing. Elite snipers are shooting at over 2km.
