To hate having Christmas decorations up after Christmas

Butterflyfluff · 21/11/2021 21:14

I get it if you are very religious but I’m not

Christmas is a celebration for us but not for religious reasons so I’m happy to put decorations up early, in order to countdown to Christmas

But once Christmas is over, I want them gone.

I love it that there’s houses now with all their lights up already.

That makes far more sense to me than having them up in January when it’s all over.

Like it or not, Christmas is less than 5 weeks away and, for most people, it does involve a bit of thought

For me the Christmas period doesn't end until after new year - I want my decs up until then. I don't put them up super early though.

Youngatheart00 · 21/11/2021 21:21

I feel the same. I usually take them down on New Years Day

Curtaintassels · 21/11/2021 21:22

I hate seeing them up in November but honestly don’t care what other people do. I don’t get where people get the time from to worry about this.

Lime37 · 21/11/2021 21:23

The Christmas period ends after new year tho

ThursdayLastWeek · 21/11/2021 21:23

I think people who put them up early get fed up of them early.

SpinachIsAGatewayDrug · 21/11/2021 21:23

3rd Jan - all packed away and the hyacinths brought out so that the flowers can herald the coming spring Grin

Hollyhead · 21/11/2021 21:24

I find people who cut Christmas off at Boxing Day a bit soulless - it’s a red flag for people who like a commercial Christmas for me. I’m not religious, but there’s so much family joy to be had in the time between Christmas and new year, we prioritise different things than we do the rest of the year. It’s a lovely joyful time.

LettertoHermoine · 21/11/2021 21:25

I put them up on 12th Dec and I take them down on the 29th. Couldn't care less what people say. Christmas is over then so they come down. Plus I like going into the new year with a clean and fresh house. I love Christmas but I don't like dragging it on, could not possibly leave them up until the 6th. I would lose my mind.

Johnnypiratesfriend · 21/11/2021 21:26

Christmas isn't over till 5th of January. We certainly have people over during Christmas week and like to be festive. I think it weird tbh when people put their decorations up in November and take them down during Christmas. It makes me laugh (and secretly judge - like do they not understand Christmas).

emmaliz · 21/11/2021 21:26

I put them up early and I hate taking them down. I'd have a tree all through the winter months if I could, it makes winter seem more cosy and twinkly. Once the tree is gone it feels more bleak. Thats just me and I appreciate i may be in the minority here!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/11/2021 21:26

We keep ours up until 12th Night - I think it helps cheer up the time after Christmas, when things can feel a bit flat.

I do love white fairy lights (the ‘warm’ white ones not that harsh bright white), and would happily have them up all winter.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/11/2021 21:26

I normally put mine up early December. I absolutely love Christmas - it’s my favourite time of year - but I think putting decorations up in November is too early. The excitement of Christmas wears off if you start too soon.

I want my decorations down just after New Year but I usually struggle to find time. One year, we had them up until nearly February because we were so busy. Blush I’m a teacher so full on with work and DD1 was still young enough to be a massive hindrance to putting them away.

DD2 is 14m and I’m not planning to put up a tree this year. She’ll just endlessly pull the decorations off and I don’t have the energy to redirect her all the time.

Moraxella · 21/11/2021 21:26

@Hollyhead yep it’s a peaceful lull for reflection, hanging with your family, cosy meals and reading nigel slater’s Christmas chronicles. January is so dreary that I’m all for decs up til 12th night.

MrsSkimpole · 21/11/2021 21:28

Um... I put mine up about 2 days before Christmas (to satisfy the teenagers) and get rid of them a week later. I am a churchgoer. If I didn't have children, I wouldn't bother with decorations because they're more bother than they are worth. I'd have one Advent candle. Make of that what you will.

Bluntness100 · 21/11/2021 21:28

I prefer to keep them up till after new year, it’s still the xmas period for me, this year we have friends for new year so the house will still b nice and Xmassy for our party

I also find it a bit bah humbug to be packing them away straight after crimbo,

Camomila · 21/11/2021 21:29

I like to put mine up mid December and keep them up until the epiphany (6th Jan) which is when my DC get their stockings.

HelloMrBond · 21/11/2021 21:30

I’ve driven this evening past a few houses with decorations up at the windows already. Like it or not, Christmas is a religious festival and lasts 12 days until the 6th Jan. If you want to extract the religious element, then follow the pagan tradition and bring some evergreen into the house for the shortest day (21st) and burn a Yule log.

If neither of those traditions fit the bill, then by all means proclaim yourself a sucker for tacky commercialism.

Advent, the season of waiting (for Christmas ) starts next Sunday, the first of four Sundays in advent. I love advent decorations, we have a wreath of greenery, with four candles, we light one on the first Sunday, two on the second ... Advent calendars,

We have carol singers carved from wood, I like to set them up in a different configuration each year.

The tree goes up on Christmas Eve and is taken down in the twelfth day of Christmas, 5th Jan.

urbanbuddha · 21/11/2021 21:34

Twelve days of Christmas so the decorations are up till January 5th or 6th. They don't go up until mid-December.

I'd say your Christmas parties are KICKIN!! Go suck a lemon.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 21/11/2021 21:35

The one thing that confuses me is the people who put their decorations up in November posting on social media that they've taken them down on Boxing Day "so the kids have room to play". I just imagine these poor kids sitting still for 7 weeks.

3peassuit · 21/11/2021 21:36

I take mine down on 12th night. I don’t put them till the weekend before Christmas, if I did I might be fed up of them by Boxing Day.
