To hate having Christmas decorations up after Christmas

Butterflyfluff · 21/11/2021 21:14

I get it if you are very religious but I’m not

Christmas is a celebration for us but not for religious reasons so I’m happy to put decorations up early, in order to countdown to Christmas

But once Christmas is over, I want them gone.

I love it that there’s houses now with all their lights up already.

That makes far more sense to me than having them up in January when it’s all over.

Hm but you’re saying you like decorations up early though? So then it makes sense that they come down early.

Up early, down early or up later, down later.. they’re up for likely a similar amount of time it’s just that the later is more traditional.

Parker231 · 21/11/2021 21:55

Everyone has their own traditions - there isn’t a right or wrong.

For us there isn’t anything religious about Christmas - it’s party time, presents, time with family and friends, food and drinks.

The decorations go up the middle of December but always down the morning of New Years Eve ready to make way for partying and a clean start to the next year.

SpideySenseTingles · 21/11/2021 21:56

In our house the Christmas decorations go up on the 1st December and come down on the 1st January.

I do love the twinkling lights and the house being all cosy but , yeah by new year's day I'm itching to tidy the house up again.

I'm a committed Christian but for me, New Year's Day is the end of the Christmas celebrations.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/11/2021 21:59

We usually put ours up around the 1st of December and start to take them down on New Years Day. The tree usually goes 'out' on NYD with the rest of the decs gradually being boxed and taken upstairs over the next few days.

One of the nice things about having Thanksgiving (4th Thurs of Nov) is that it does keep us from putting the Xmas decs up 'too early'.

I hate people who take their decorations down before twelfth night.

@WomanStanleyWoman

I hate people who take their decorations down before twelfth night.
Why?

If they are not religious, and don’t prented to be so, why would you ‘hate’ them for not having decorations up 12 days after the main event

Hate?

Confused

Why would you hate it - 12th night doesn’t mean anything to me so why would I keep the decorations up until then? For us NYE is the end of the Christmas celebrations and start of the next year.
WomanStanleyWoman · 21/11/2021 22:05

@LettertoHermoine

I put them up on 12th Dec and I take them down on the 29th. Couldn't care less what people say. Christmas is over then so they come down. Plus I like going into the new year with a clean and fresh house. I love Christmas but I don't like dragging it on, could not possibly leave them up until the 6th. I would lose my mind.
‘Lose your mind’?! It’s some baubles and tinsel.
Yeko · 21/11/2021 22:06

Mine come down on boxing day or the day after.
Hating people who take it down before the 12th night is a tad dramatic.

Why does anyone hate anything? It’s your choice if you take them down earlier - and it’s my choice to hate that.

You hate them? Hate? Confused

Which bit confuses you?

Angel2702 · 21/11/2021 22:09

Ours always come down day after Boxing Day. There’s too much clutter and mess after Christmas and I like to have a good clean, sort all the kids toys and be clean for the new Year.

LettertoHermoine · 21/11/2021 22:10

@WomanStanleyWoman emmmmmmmmmmm nope, I have a tiny house and a Christmas tree takes up a lot of room as well as decorations. Couldn't look at them lingering way into January so yes, I would lose my mind if I had to leave them up to the 12th! And ya know what?? That's ok! You enjoy them till then..I don't. Simples :)

It's just I think people are wondering why you're using such a strong emotion over something that probably actually only mildly annoys you or makes you wonder at their actions...

lazylinguist · 21/11/2021 22:10

I usually take mine down on about 2nd Jan. I cba with them after that. But I dislike early decorating much more than the idea of keeping them up until the 6th. I love Christmas and I don't want to be fed up with it before it even starts!

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 21/11/2021 22:10

@emmaliz

I put them up early and I hate taking them down. I'd have a tree all through the winter months if I could, it makes winter seem more cosy and twinkly. Once the tree is gone it feels more bleak. Thats just me and I appreciate i may be in the minority here!
Ah a kindred spirit Smile
Butterflyfluff · 21/11/2021 22:11

WomanStanleyWoman, I’m pretty sure that by saying you ‘HATE’ those who don’t do as you do, you’re not exactly spreading the religious love 🤔

I do hate it though. I just know they’re the kind of people I’d walk under buses to avoid.

Did I ever say I was spreading religious love?

What ‘irony’?

reluctantbrit · 21/11/2021 22:14

Everyone defines Christmas differently. For me, I start decorating the first Advent Sunday, Advent wreath, Christmas candle carousel/pyramid with the carol singers and some wooden Christmas village scenes I collected over the years.

Our tree only comes a couple of days before Christmas Eve, the nativity set comes on the 23rd or 24th depending if I work.

Everything stays up until the weekend after the 6th January as then the three Wise Men arrive and we finish the Christmas period.

So in total I may have the same amount of time but I start later and finish later, what's the problem with that?

For me the Christmas magic would be gone by early December if I would see the tree each day so early.
