To hate having Christmas decorations up after Christmas

Butterflyfluff · 21/11/2021 21:14

I get it if you are very religious but I’m not

Christmas is a celebration for us but not for religious reasons so I’m happy to put decorations up early, in order to countdown to Christmas

But once Christmas is over, I want them gone.

I love it that there’s houses now with all their lights up already.

That makes far more sense to me than having them up in January when it’s all over.

I used to put them up Mid December till Mid Jan until I worked in retail. While working in retail I took them down as soon as I was back to work as they annoyed me, everyone in Christmas mode shopping the Christmas bargains while I had to work and my decorations at home just added to my annoyance.
Now I pop them up at the start of December as they make me happy and I love the lights in the dark nights and go down the first day I am at home on my own when the kids are at school out the way.

EurghCobwebs · 22/11/2021 11:57

I'm really struggling to see the point of this post.

FinallySomeNormality · 22/11/2021 12:19

Usually by 27th I want my house back to normal so I take them all down! We put ours up last weekend in November though so they do get a good run!

BogRollBOGOF · 22/11/2021 12:54

Mine usually go up at some point in December when I have time and go down around 12th night... special exception for 2021 when I took them down when my children finally went back to school. Partly that January was extra bleak, partly because my will to exist was wearing thin, partly that I had a big birthday that was pretty tough to celebrate in normal ways. I don't normally keep them until the daffs venture out!

I can grasp people who want decorations up for a minimal period, put them up last minute and take down early.
I struggle to grasp those who rush to put them up prematurely then get pissed off and clear out. Why not wait a few weeks and do things at the proper time?

I don't like the lights going down anyway especially early because January is a long, bleak void anyway. Why maximise that when you can keep some cheer for the first 5-6 days of i

Parker231 · 22/11/2021 13:14

@BogRollBOGOF - the ‘proper’ time is different for different people. There isn’t a right or wrong time. I never have decorations up after NYE as that is the New Year and not Christmas

NeedWineNow · 22/11/2021 13:28

Ours go up either first or second weekend in December and come down just before 12th night. Our village Xmas lights switch on is this weekend, and I see that some houses already have their trees up but each to their own I say.

Weirdwonders · 22/11/2021 13:30

The 12 days of Christmas start on Christmas Day. Stop getting Christmas wrong. You’ve got your decs up before Advent and down before the season has even started? Your TV’s rotted your brains

Dishwashersaurous · 22/11/2021 13:37

Anyone can do what they like. But it's a fact that the Christmas period is 12 days

KosherDill · 22/11/2021 13:38

@DrCoconut

It's up to anyone what they do but I'd find it very strange to start Christmas before advent and end it before Epiphany. For everything there is a season and all that.
Same here.
Parker231 · 22/11/2021 13:38

Sinterklass is celebrated on 6 December - that is the correct date to start the Christmas celebrations.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 22/11/2021 13:39

Up the weekend before Christmas Day; down Jan 2 for me, but each to their own Xmas Smile .

Tink626 · 22/11/2021 13:45

I absolutely love my Christmas tree. The ornaments are full of special memories for me and remind me of special times or holidays. I always keep my tree up until 12th night (and I'm not religious).

Agree!

Everyone does it their own way and how it fits in with their own lives. No right or wrong way.

Lesina · 22/11/2021 13:55

Take them down on New Years Eve. Clean the house from top to bottom. Like waking up on 1st Jan with a clean slate. Puts me in a better frame of mind :)

Vicliz24 · 22/11/2021 18:08

We leave ours until twelfth night but I take the door wreath and visible window decorations down by the second of January. I basically take that week to put them away but by not but leave the trees with just lights until the end . Then I have a vase of fairy lights I keep out until the nights start drawing out in mid February.

Roselilly36 · 22/11/2021 18:12

I usually put decs up first Dec so by Boxing Day I want to get my home back to normal, my decs are always down long before 12th night.

Kitkat151 · 22/11/2021 18:13

I take mine down before new year....I need the house all clean and back to normal to start the new year with

Sinterklass is celebrated on 6 December - that is the correct date to start the Christmas celebrations.
Says who? Confused

The Christian Christmas is 12 days, yes.
Parker231 · 22/11/2021 18:39

@00100001 - it’s the most important date of the Christmas holidays when stockings and presents are opened. For children it’s the most exciting day of the season.

Doesn't mean it's "the correct date to start the Christmas celebrations"....

There is no correct date to start celebrations.

BashfulClam · 22/11/2021 18:48

It’s so depressing in January that I like the sparkle and lights for a bit longer.

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 22/11/2021 19:01

I put my decorations out gradually and take them down gradually. Beginning of December the wreaths, candles and advent calendars are out, mid-December Father Christmas themed decorations are out and a Christmas tree, end of December the Father Christmas stuff is away and winter themed decorations are out. Tree stays until it dies, why get rid of a tree while it still has life left? Candles and lights stay out for the rest of the winter - January and February are so dark!

nohouseyet · 22/11/2021 19:28

For our family, Christmas begins Christmas Eve and ends New Year’s day.

Between the 24th and 31st we are still seeing family, eating lovely food, watching films and generally holidaying. We stretch gifts out over Christmas day and boxing day too.

ghostyslovesheets · 22/11/2021 19:41

I'm always a bit baffled by people who race to throw them up as early as possible only to proclaim they are bored of them by boxing day!

I get a real tree so it goes up 2 weeks before and stays until I return to work in January - I like a tree and twinkly lights on NYE - the season is not over by the 26th!
