To want to pay cleaner by bank transfer not cash.

Starryskiesinthesky · 18/11/2021 07:41

Cleaner wants paid in cash but I never have cash so would prefer to pay by bank transfer. Fact she wants cash makes me think she’s not declaring it. What do others do and do you care if they are not declaring it? £15 per hour if it makes a difference. Thanks.

All the excuses that its so hard for you also mean those same excuses are why its hard for her to then withdraw the cash.

But the vast majority of people aren't paid their wages in cash yet they still manage to pay their bills, spend money etc. What is so different about cleaners?

JurgensCakeBaby · 18/11/2021 11:05

Our gardener wants cash on the day, he had too many people not paying by transfer then had to chase them. Maybe she has an overdraft or credit card debts, maybe she has a partner who tries to control her finances and it's easier for her to squirrel some cash away (as women are often advised to do here). It doesn't automatically mean she's committing tax fraud, using cash is a legitimate payment option.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 18/11/2021 11:09

Why? Why do you need proof you have paid your cleaner for her weekly clean of, what 2 hours?

I don't have a cleaner but personally I'd like the reassurance that I had paid her. That I hadn't forgotten and she was silently seething or trying to work out how to ask me for the money without making everything awkward.

Takemetothe90s · 18/11/2021 11:23

@malificent7

Why begrudge a cleaner not declaring it when so many rich MPs also dont declare expenses etc?
Exactly, this really pisses me off!! The people begrudging their cleaner cash are probably the same giving to food backs and declaring how awful it is that the working poor need to choose between heating or eating!!
notanothertakeaway · 18/11/2021 11:24

Some while ago a family member was caught out paying someone in cash and the tax people said that what he'd paid them was net pay. He ended up being sent a demand to pay the tax and NI which would have been deducted to get to that net pay figure

The person they were "employing" did not have to pay anything extra!

@bestcoffeepot that sounds like your family member was paying an employee in cash, to avoid paying tax, NI etc. That's quite different from paying a self employed contractor, in which case it's the contractor's responsibility to pay tax, NI on their earnings

Proudboomer · 18/11/2021 11:25

I can’t believe so many people don’t ever have cash on them or in their house.
What do you do if your child needs a couple of pound for one of the numerous theme days they do? Do you not give to charity tin rustlers ie buy a poppy, shove lose change in the collection tin for your local hospice or suchlike? Don’t your children ask for a few pound to go to the pictures, bowling alley or just to the corner shop? Don’t you ever what to buy something you don’t want to appear on your bank statement? Don’t you put a fiver in a birthday card for a party your child is attending? Dont you put anything in charity collection envelopes when they come through the door, don’t you give your children your lose change to they can hear their money box rattle when they shake it and learn that they need to save x amount of pennies to buy the comic they want?

TeeBee · 18/11/2021 11:28

I've had cleaners who prefer cash and others who don't care. When I had ones who preferred cash, I just drew a load of cash out that would pay them for a month or two and put it in a jar, ready to pay them. Hardly a hardship.

Her tax is her business but it doesn't mean she's not declaring just because she prefers cash.

Exhausteddog · 18/11/2021 11:30

I thought cleaners generally earned £15-20 per hour

Cleaners near me charge £15-16/hour but this might include their own cleaning materials, insurance and other overheads etc so not the same as earning £15/hour.

Theme days at DS school now only payable online. Rarely go into town so don't see any 'tin rustlers' If DS needs money I do a bank transfer No I don't ever buy anything I don't want to appear on bank statement (?!) We don't get collection envelopes through the door DS well past the money box/money in birthday card stage

Only thing I have cash for is the window cleaner, and that's really irritating!

TeacupDrama · 18/11/2021 11:36

everyone on mumsnet seems to live in zone 2 or 3 or 30 miinutes from town no one seems to live in Shrewsbury kidderminister ipswich hull or meltom mowbray

I always have some cash as sometimes the card machine in a small shop is down as relying on internet which in some places is slow and the only way to get your bread and milk is cash, sometimes banking websites crash for a day or two
and unfortunately some people do not pay immediately with BT so you have to chase them up. my childminder said this was a constant problem people paying too late sometimes some people just need the money exactly on time to pay bills they simply sdon;t have an extra £200-300 in current account as a cushion for late payers before DD for electric council tax go out of their account

Hemingwayscats · 18/11/2021 11:36

I think this is really common with self employed people. Whenever we’ve had any work done around the house, we’ve been asked to pay in cash and that’s everyone from carpet fitters to plumbers. We also pay the wheely bin cleaner in cash. Pretty sure they all fiddle the books, no other reason to ask for cash imo.

Jarstastic · 18/11/2021 11:38

I always pay bank transfer. I like to keep track of expenditure.
Cleaner, window cleaner, gutters anyone it’s bank transfer. If it doesn’t work for them fair enough.

Jarstastic · 18/11/2021 11:39

Ie I’ll use someone else

I have a bit of cash around for these things, but not the exact £43.50 I pay my cleaner weekly. I do pay her the cash, but it takes planning to get that exact amount. It's a faff. But I do it.

No young kids (although plenty of my colleagues with children have savings apps for them) I only give to chosen charities or collections for people I know not randoms

No. Of course - no other valid reason at all exists to ask for cash...Hmm

Oftenithinkaboutit · 18/11/2021 11:45

Do you all declare what you sell on eBay or FB marketplace? Hmm

TractorAndHeadphones · 18/11/2021 11:47

Also to add I do think going cashless isn’t that good - if there were more around me I’d be happy to pay cash.
It’s a vicious cycle though. Amount of cash points reduce, people less willing to use cash, etc.

I like the feel of notes in my hands it’s such an event when I do handle some 😂🤣 when I start driving lessons again probably will as we drive to the flashpoint

Yeah but that's how people on MN view us self employed people. I was once asked on a thread 'why don't you get a proper job?' Weirdly enough I thought running a small business that I started from scratch WAS a proper job. Hey ho Confused

I work for a bank and it's a faff to get cash! HO role working at home. Village shop doesn't do cash back. Nearest free ATM is 6 miles away and often isn't working. There was a nearer ATM at a petrol station but it never got replaced after the ram raid. Nearest PO is 4 miles away and is only open 10-12.30 Monday to Friday. Ironically I do a lot of work on Access To Cash reporting.

pigsDOfly · 18/11/2021 11:50

I very rarely use cash now - I think I've had the same £5 note in my purse for months - but if someone wants to be paid by cash I really don't see it as a problem.

I recently had some work done that cost me £240. I was asked to pay cash, which I did. I did a sort of inward eye roll but if the person doesn't declare it that's between them and the inland revenue. Even if someone takes cash it doesn't automatically mean they aren't declaring it.

Don't really understand the idea that getting cash out of a atm is a faff, they're all over the place and every supermarket has one.

If you know it's a regular payment just plan ahead and take out enough money for a few weeks.

Unless you are doing it as a business or the items may be subject to capital gains tax there is no requirement to declare the proceeds of selling personal items.

Ok, this does sound like you have a particularly difficultly accessing money from an atm, due to particular circumstances, but surely most people have easier access to cash.
user1487194234 · 18/11/2021 11:59

Always paid in cash, changed during the lockdown to Bank transfer (we paid throughout)
If i pay cash I don't care if people don't declare, that's therir issue

SeenYourArse · 18/11/2021 11:59
