Because I think they have water leak as my ceiling has a damp patch that wasn't there earlier...
I didn't think I was unreasonable, but DH when I asked him to go said jt was and it should wait till morning. Interested to hear what others think

If you're in a flat can you speak to building owners/maintenance people/landlords or whatever if you can't get to the other flat directly?
It could be a massive problem by morning if left unattended considering it appeared so quickly

bakingdemon · 17/11/2021 21:56

Stick a note on the door or if you have their number text them a picture of the mark. Our old downstairs neighbour didn't tell us about a mark that turned out to be a bad washing machine leak and it would have saved a lot of money if she'd told us at once.

Sparklfairy · 17/11/2021 21:57

I had this recently. Although there's been an ongoing issue for a while, I was surprised to come home around this time one night and find the ceiling completely brown, bowed and dripping Confused

My neighbour was in and luckily answered the door! Do you think they're out or ignoring the door at this time of night? Might be worth slipping a note through and trying again in the morning.

Gimlisaxe · 17/11/2021 21:58

Agree with PP pop a note through their door explaining that you knocked and there was no answer and why.

Are you sure they are not on holiday?

NotMyCat · 17/11/2021 21:59

I had to when there was water dripping through the light fitting. Neighbour "it'll have to wait until morning"
Me Hmm great. Let's hope we don't get electrocuted then. He refused to let the plumber in and it took bloody weeks

howdidigettobe50something · 17/11/2021 22:03

When I was younger I shared an upstairs flat with a mate. We were woken up in the night by the people in the flat below who had water coming through their ceiling. Our washing machine had completed flooded the kitchen!

HeronLanyon · 17/11/2021 22:05

Measure the patch against something so you can be sure if it is getting larger or not. Good luck.

NotMyCat · 17/11/2021 22:05

These are the two leaks I came home to (separate days!)

Not a block of flats, so no one central person iyswim. Nor do I know them or their there landlord (they only moved in recently, and the layout of the houses means we don't see each other in passing)
A note seems like a pretty obvious idea so I'm going to go pop one through the letterbox with my number on. I don't think there are in as I can't hear anyone above and all the lights were off when I went up. Slightly concerned though as we have noisy pipes, and I can hear those groaning occasionally even though no one is in and what sounds like dripping now, not sure if I'm being paranoid though.

If the leak is coming from your upstairs neighbour they almost certainly will have no sign of it up there as water travels downwards.

Unless it's something really obvious, like they have gone out and left a tap running with the plug in, they or their landlord will need to get a plumber out.

SilverBirchWithout · 17/11/2021 22:21

I would suggest making a small hole in the middle of the damp patch, keep a bucket underneath. Otherwise the water will potentially cover the whole ceiling and bring it down. Make sure you have plenty of containers in reserve in case it comes whooping through.

SilverBirchWithout · 17/11/2021 22:22

*whooshing not whooping!

Sparklfairy · 17/11/2021 22:32

This was mine - after a strapping bloke came over at 10pm and saved the day by poking it with a pencil Confused to release the pressure as @SilverBirchWithout says.

I should point out that this happened early September. It's finally been arranged to be sorted for next week Hmm

I knocked upstairs once at midnight the water was dripping so had no choice really. The wife was not happy about me knocking at that time.
Her son 18 had started running a bath a left it running while he was playing games in his room and forgot about it. don't think he will forget again in a hurry his mum made him pay for the damaged wallpaper in the bathroom and paint to repaint our ceiling once it dried out.

I would give them a knock they may not be aware they have water leaking

HemanOrSheRa · 17/11/2021 22:51

If they haven't returned home yet, I'd tape a note to the front door. Hopefully they will take it off when they come home and you will know they have seen it. I honestly wouldn't worry about disturbing them whatever time they get home. Particularly if you think the bathroom is above! I'd be careful about using the lights in the room where the damp patch is. Water will track through weakest points.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 17/11/2021 22:55

Agree with taping a note to the door.

They might not notice a note put through the door quite so easily.

tcjotm · 17/11/2021 22:58

You’d wake them if there was a hint of fire, without hesitation and this could be pretty disastrous if your ceiling comes down. Better now than at 3am!

MagicBlueberry · 17/11/2021 23:07

I domt think I could poke a hole in, the worst of it is in a corner of my landing, though there are very faint damp lines in DS bedroom ceiling.
I can hear something up there but not someone. I've been round again but there's no lights on and no answer, so I've taped a note to the door too to make sure they can't miss the one through the door Smile the damp doesn't appear to be getting worse which I'm relieved about.

@beigebrownblue bit unnecessary. If you read all ops posts you'll see the only reason she asked DH to go was because she has just got out of the shower and he was fully dressed!

Sparklfairy · 17/11/2021 23:11

So unnecessary @beigebrownblue Hmm

Sure, yes get the point.

No worries about health and safety and indeed life or death electrocution situation.

Let's leave it to DH shall we?

Good luck with that one.

Redyellowblue34 · 17/11/2021 23:16

Too soon to suggest ‘ltb’? Grin

Lobaloo · 17/11/2021 23:17

@beigebrownblue but you haven't really got the point have you? Nor have you read the OPs posts Hmm. Why don't you come back when you've gotten down off your high horse.

beigebrownblue · 17/11/2021 23:19

I don't have a horse.

If OP wants to get herself and her entire famiily electrocuted I guess it is her business.

Not mine.

Would have thought though women on here would have more sense.

Obviously I'm mistaken.
