To think perfumes arent strong anymore

JollyJoon · 17/11/2021 10:55

Recently bought two perfumes I used to wear 10 years ago and they are definitely not as strong. It feels like I can barely smell perfume on anyone else these days either

Is it me or are they ripping us off?

LaBellina · 17/11/2021 10:58

Nope I noticed this too. These days the only strong perfumes are made by Thierry Mugler but other then that, nah. Although I must say I’m glad that 80’s powerhouses such as Giorgio Beverly Hills aren’t commonly worn anymore…

PleasantBirthday · 17/11/2021 10:59

They also don't last at all, it doesn't matter what you spend, it's gone after an hour or so.

JollyJoon · 17/11/2021 11:00

@LaBellina
A few spritzes of pure poison used to really linger intensely, now you go really heavy handed with it and an hour later its gone

I'm not okay with paying high prices for low quality. Have they changed the way they make perfume now or something?

WheelieBinPrincess · 17/11/2021 11:03

No they don’t last, it feels like such a waste of money now. It’s not a noseblind thing either because it happened on the first wear. My summer Issey Miyake one smells weaker than the bloody Nivea cream I put on my face after about fifteen minutes.

I do remember in my youth dousing myself with Body Shop vanilla and EVERYONE would smell it. I used to get asked to leave the classroom to tone it down 😂

PleasantBirthday · 17/11/2021 11:05

I think I read that they do reformulate perfumes and use more synthetic ingredients as the original ingredients become scarcer and more expensive. Don't know if that's true.

Comvit · 17/11/2021 11:05
Shock

I'm so glad someone else has noticed this too. I thought it was me. I swim a lot so I thought it might be the chlorine overriding the perfume. Or I thought it might be hormonal changes.

I reckon they've definitely changed the recipes to make them cheaper to manufacture.

I've found that vegan perfumes are actually the strongest and more subtle - less chemically, more of a soft musky fragrance. I find Dolma the best

WheelieBinPrincess · 17/11/2021 11:06

I swear DH’s aftershaves are stronger though, his Armani ones still smell great ages after mine has faded.

MrzClaus · 17/11/2021 11:15

I find it depends on the brand! My Chanel is as strong as always, same for Creed and my new favourite Maison Crivelli (a one spray wonder). Jo Malone (I wear cologne intense) is also just as strong, same with diptyque.

I have noticed some other perfumes I used to enjoy (Dior I'm looking at you) are no longer lasting past an hour or so, even with more sprays that normal!

I think a lot of brands are moving more towards Eau de toilette rather that eau du parfum or even extract du parfum or cologne. Definitely not as long lasting - when it's £100+ per bottle I want results 😂

Crumblinginside · 17/11/2021 11:18

A really good strong one is Poeme. Also bought Issy Myakke
Made sure it was anEau d Parfum

MaxNormal · 17/11/2021 11:22

Really? I am periodically gassed by passers by who had a heavy hand with the perfume. Is the rest of the world just going nose blind?

Same here!

I can't say I spend on perfume the way I did 10 years ago but I haven't noticed the perfume of others fading away.

WheelieBinPrincess · 17/11/2021 11:28

Poem certainly is strong but I can’t bear the powdery scents. I want a sharp strong woody/citrusy scent ideally. I know about the toilette/parfum thing.

Dior has definitely got weaker.

JollyJoon · 17/11/2021 11:29

Agree with you two PP re Dior and would add Guerlain too.

Chanel seems to be okay depending on the specific perfume.

Actually Lush perfumes have incredible staying power IME.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 17/11/2021 11:32

Lush use things like tonka and patchouli that linger well.

Malibuismysecrethome · 17/11/2021 11:43

Chanel perfumes no longer smell like the originals did. More chemical now and certainly not as evocative as they once were. Jo Malone is particularly weak. I am buying Hermes perfumes recently and I’m pleased with them. Also Molecule 01.

ColinTheKoala · 17/11/2021 11:49

My mum uses Red Door and it sticks around for ages! I have a top she gave me that I've not worn or washed yet and the whole drawer it is in stinks of Red Door!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 17/11/2021 11:54

Is it partly to do with preservatives as well?
I had a bottle of perfume from crabtree and evelyn from about 1994 and it still smelled the same in 2010.
It had parabens in it and formaldehyde, I think.

HoppingPavlova · 17/11/2021 11:55

No, they are crap nowadays. I still have Shalimar that goes strong, apart from that the rest are weak and barely last 30min and frankly I’m over buying anymore.

Same. Think realistically those who can't smell it as much are going nose blind to it.
Otherpeoplesteens · 17/11/2021 12:04

As I understand it, scents are reformulated from time to time to cut costs, but also because ingredients are periodically banned and substitutes need to be found.

The big one was oakmoss, banned in - I think - 2017 which meant basically all chypre and fougère scents had to be redone either with synthetic substitutes or with the offending molecule removed.

Boood · 17/11/2021 12:30

Haven’t noticed them getting weaker or lasting less, but prices have shot up over the last few years. I’m sure the average premium perfume- Armani, Klein etc- was around £50, but now it’s closer to £100.

Member589500 · 17/11/2021 12:34

Try Oud. I love the one I wear it’s not all patchouli based.
I wear Woody Style by Arabian Oud.

Horst · 17/11/2021 12:42

Those being gassed out are more likely people wearing body sprays.

When your near the teenagers the lynx overpowers and the girls their impulse.

Only notice a few adult males and I walk by plenty.
Women again notice less than the males.

roses2 · 17/11/2021 12:50

I've switched to buying dupes from Perfume Parlour after reading about them on mumsnet. They are very long lasting and oil based not water based:

Me too - only at the weekend I was passed by someone who had such a powerful stench of the stuff it several minutes before I stopped smelling it.
