Amazon no longer accepting Visa credit cards from January 2022 - WTF?

AIBU to think this is madness? They're going to inconvenience so many of their customers. Still, it's good incentive to stop using Amazon I suppose!

I agree that this is bound to change as the months go on.

However my credit card is Mastercard anyway - the Lloyds one that gives you cash back - so no dramas for me at the moment.

I have a Visa cc- it's a Barclaycard and they used to be Mastercards- I wish they still were right now! I started looking at Mastercards and one of the best rated was Amazon's own. I am not super keen but Amazon is a godsend to us and I know that this card will be accepted/won't swap providers. Plus I was looking for a Mastercard anyway as an extra to my visa- but not as my main card. I like my main cc being in the same app as my banking. Does anyone know if Barclays /Barclaycard have any plans to swap credit AND debit back if Visa becomes problematic? I don't want a problematic debit card - but I'd be annoyed if I did the legwork and switched or set up an additional cc and then Barclays changed anyway.

I recently had a paperwork blitz and shredded some Access statement frim late 80s - think I’d kept them to do with some fraudulent use of my card ‘just in case’ 😵‍💫 now feel small twinge of nostalgia and even regret. Loved Access. First credit card.

GirlfriendInAKorma · 19/11/2021 12:02

There’s a garage in Halifax that only recently took down their sign saying the accept Access 😂

I have blurry photo taken just a month ago of remote country garage with huge access sign on road facing placard. Was surprised to find it carried on into the 90s. Feels older or perhaps the 90s were in fact a very long time ago anyway.

This will affect people who can pay their visa credit card, but can't apply for a different one. Like me, no one likes it that I'm part time but self employed now.

Warning
If you have or consider applying for an Amazon Mastercard, please be aware that any goods you buy on Amazon that are fulfilled by Amazon, will not be covered by section 75. .Buyer (your Amazon MasterCard) and lender Amazon MasterCard) cannot be the same.

This is local to me - I don't think anyone's noticed it's still there.

LoisLane66 · 19/11/2021 13:58

@mehface
I realise that they're tightening up on criteria when applying for bank accounts in general and credit cards in particular as I had to go through the mill yesterday when opening a new account with a bank I have been with for 22 years and with whom I have a credit card and savings account. As there is a password on my TransUnion credit file, the bank underwriters wanted 2 of the characters before my application could be processed further. It entailed 80+ minutes waiting while I made the call to TU as I had forgotten the password which was a jumble of letters. TU had to send me a code after I filled in a long form to access the file and eventually I could get back on the other line to speak to Halifax and they speak to their underwriters.
It's all in a good cause but it's not as if I'm a rich bitch. They asked my income which is a state pension, nothing more which may only be what you earn part-time. It's swings and roundabouts.

Thanks for this. Will definitely avoid!
GirlfriendInAKorma · 19/11/2021 14:13

Ouch!

GirlfriendInAKorma · 19/11/2021 14:13

Oops, ouch at no section 75 coverage.

minimecantrollerskate · 19/11/2021 14:33

I pay my cards off in full every month and always have done because I don't use them for credit, I just use them as a convenient way to pay and have just one transaction on the bank rather than several, plus I have gained a lot over the years from the rewards schemes.

YesNoWhoCares · 19/11/2021 14:37

Blimey, thanks @LoisLane66. I will just leave my Marks card on there then and not get Amazon card

LoisLane66 · 19/11/2021 14:45

As long as you are buying goods NOT marked as 'fulfilled by Amazon' then you can use the Amazon MasterCard. The loss of section 75 cover only pertains to goods they 'fulfill' themselves. Just thought I'd make it crystal clear in case anyone misread and thought it meant all goods.
It's easy to make mistakes and not check the seller before using your Amazon card, especially at this busy time of year when things 'go missing/undelivered'. Hmm

alborana · 19/11/2021 15:07

I have an Amazon credit card and didn't know about the Section 75 cover. Thanks for flagging this - I'm going to start looking around for another card with good perks as I buy a lot from Amazon, almost all directly fulfilled.

GirlfriendInAKorma · 19/11/2021 15:13

There are some decent cashback offers out there on Mastercard cards.

Mine’s a Lloyds one - but if you go to money supermarket or similar then you can see what you are eligible for without having to have a hard credit check.

LoisLane66 · 19/11/2021 15:51

All you need to do is go to your own bank or ring them and ask for your Visa credit card to be changed to a MasterCard. They won't be a problem as long as you do it before 19th January. Until then your Visa CC is still good.

I've just spoken to Halifax's credit card department, who confirmed that if you pay with ANY credit card and Amazon is the fulfiller of the order (in other words, Amazon take the money from your account, deduct their cut and pass the rest onto the actual seller) then section 75 in the Ts and Cs of the credit card will not apply. This is if your spend is between £100-30,000. Of course, you can always plead with your provider to come to some arrangement but section 75 won't apply if things go AWOL or you have problems with your purchase or seller.
All banks are there to assist and change your Visa to MasterCard. Just ask.

flirtygirl · 19/11/2021 16:39

For those changing or adding a new bank, then starling and monzo are great and very easy to open.

If you use money savings expert and check. Eligibility without affecting your credit report, credit cards are very easy to get.

Just be responsible and pay in full every month and don't spend silly on them as credit cards are great for budget management and of course extra perks and s75.
